A review was conducted of children with intussusception admitted to the Royal Children's Hospital over a 16 year period: of 630 episodes of intussusception, 28 represented recurrences (4.4%): 10 of these occurred in children aged 2 years or over. Duration of symptoms and the incidence of an incorrect initial diagnosis were markedly reduced with recurrence. The clinical presentation was similar to the first episode apart from rectal bleeding which was less common, reflecting the shorter history. Sixteen barium enemas were performed, of which 10 were successful. There were 18 operations with eight resections; seven for localized lesions and one for failure of manual reduction in a patient with an inverted Meckel's diverticulum. Barium reduction for recurrence should not be attempted in children over 2 years of age in whom no laparotomy was performed for their first episode, for most second recurrences, or in multiple polyposis.

The epidemiology of gastrointestinal bleedings is poorly known in France. The principal source of bleeding comes from upper gastrointestinal tract. The most common etiology of upper gastrointestinal bleeding is peptic ulcer. Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs absorption is frequently associated with ulcer bleeding. The second most frequent etiology is variceal hemorrhage, complicating mostly alcoholic cirrhosis. The causes of lower gastrointestinal tract bleeding are more difficult to detect. The major causes are: colonic diverticula, angiodysplasias, traumatic ulcers of the rectum, colorectal carcinomas and colitis. In children, peptic ulcers and varices are the two main causes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. Etiologies of lower gastrointestinal bleeding are varying according to the age: juvenile polyposis in children less than 6 years and Meckel's diverticulum after 6 years.

Intussusception in adult is a rare condition. Pathologic process is identifiable in 90% of cases. Emergency clinical diagnosis is generally difficult and CT scan typical features are of use. Surgery is always necessary to treat bowel necrosis and to perform pathologic examination. Diagnosis of cancer must be in mind and lymphadenectomy must be done. We present two recent cases of intussusception in adults due to adenomatosis polyposis and Meckel's diverticulum.
