Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a congenital disorder that results from an incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct. MD may give rise to bleeding, intestinal obstruction and inflammation; however its perforation by a foreign body is an extremely rare life-threatening complication. We report on a 52 years-old Brazilian Amazon man presenting symptoms and signs of acute abdomen with an initial suspicion of acute appendicitis. However, the right diagnosis was made only during exploratory laparotomy when the appendix was found to be normal, whereas MD was found to be inflamed and perforated by a chicken bone. The patient was treated successfully with resection of a segment of the ileum, including the perforated diverticulum, and had an uncomplicated postoperative course.

Persistent Meckel's diverticulum is an uncommon embryonic developmental anomaly of the distal small intestine created by a portion of the vitelline duct adjacent to intestine that remains patent. This portion can form a diverticulum (Meckel's diverticulum) or a fibrous band, called vitelloumbilical band, and can be associated with colic after local impaction or strangulation of the small intestine around the remnant. This report describes two cases of Meckel's diverticulum with different morphological features in older horses. This congenital disorder should be considered as a reason for abdominal pain, even in the older horse, and should be included in the differential diagnosis of acute abdominal pain and recurrent moderate colic.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a congenital disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that is usually asymptomatic. Perforation of an MD by foreign bodies is an extremely rare cause of acute abdomen in children. We present a rare case of perforation of an MD in a child after eating melon seeds. The patient was treated successfully with segmental resection and primary anastomosis and had an uneventful postoperative recovery.
