The purpose of the study is to establish hygienic properties of the new preparations for intensive washing and their effect on the skin of man. Examinations are performed on 5 new washing preparations from firm "Verila": "Linda" (from the producer and from the trade network from the country--Ruse, Blagoevgrad, Stara Zagora, Pleven, Cherven Bryag, Plovdiv and Dobrich), recipe No 1, 2, 3 and 4. Sanitary and chemical examinations are carried out: organoleptic indices, nonionogenic surface active substances, total content of surface active substances, content of carbamide, sodium carbonate, ammonium nitrate, formaldehyde and free alkali. Investigations are made on 125 volunteers for skin irritative and allergenic effect, with epicutaneous test before and after 30-day washing--respectively with 0.5% and 2% and with 5% and 20% of the washing preparations. The results point out the absence of ammonium nitrate and formaldehyde and compliance with the content of the composition of the declared expenditure norms (except of "Linda" from the trade network of the country). There are no reactions of skin irritation and allergy in neither of the subjects with all washing preparations. Recommendations are given to the producer for observing the technological discipline and requirements to the packings.

Polylactide is a biodegradable and biocompatible biomaterial. Based on the PLA (Polylactide) membrane, we have produced a new PLA/PTMC (Polytrimethylene carbonate) blends membrane. The biological properties of this membrane were studied by cell toxicity experiment, acute toxicity experiment, skin irritant experiment, sensitization test, hemolytic test, micronucleus test and subcutaneous implantation test. The results demonstrated that the blends membrane has no toxicity and it does not cause skin irritation, hypersensitive reaction and hemolysis. The micronucleus ratio of the membrane is 1.3% +/- 1.0%, being less than 3%. The result of medullary micronucleus test was reported negative. The wounds were free from suppuration and necrosis after subcutaneous implantation in all periods. In the experimental application of this member to preventing adhesion after rabbit intestine operation, the membrane demonstrated good effect. In conclusion, PLA/PTMC blends membrane is a material with good biocompatibility.

6-Beta-naltrexol is the major active metabolite of naltrexone, NTX, a potent mu-opioid receptor antagonist used in the treatment of alcohol dependence and opioid abuse. Compared to naloxone, NTX has a longer duration of action largely attributed to 6-beta-naltrexol. This study was carried out in order to determine percutaneous absorption of a transdermal codrug of naltrexol, 6-beta-naltrexol-hydroxybupropion codrug (CB-NTXOL-BUPOH), in hairless guinea pigs as well as to evaluate the safety of 6-beta-naltrexol for development as a transdermal dosage form. This codrug may be useful in the simultaneous treatment of alcohol dependence and tobacco addiction. The carbonate codrug traversed the skin at a faster rate than 6-beta-naltrexol. 6-Beta-naltrexol equivalent steady state plasma concentrations of 6.4 ng/ml were obtained after application of the codrug as compared to 1.2 ng/ml from 6-beta-naltrexol base. The steady state plasma concentration of hydroxybupropion after codrug application was 6.9 ng/ml. Skin sensitization and irritation tested in the hairless guinea pigs using the Buehler method revealed that 6-beta-naltrexol had no skin sensitizing potential. The method was validated with a known sensitizer, p-phenylenediamine, which induced sensitization in 90% of the animals. 6-beta-Naltrexol caused only mild transient skin irritation after the initial application of the patch. During subsequent applications, erythema was slightly increased but no skin damage was observed. In conclusion, a transdermal codrug of 6-beta-naltrexol could be a viable alternative treatment for alcohol and opiate abuse.

Approximately 10% of the population in the USA suffer from nickel allergy, and many are unable to wear jewellery or handle coins and other objects that contain nickel. Many agents have been developed to reduce the penetration of nickel through skin, but few formulations are safe and effective. Here, we show that applying a thin layer of glycerine emollient containing nanoparticles of either calcium carbonate or calcium phosphate on an isolated piece of pig skin (in vitro) and on the skin of mice (in vivo) prevents the penetration of nickel ions into the skin. The nanoparticles capture nickel ions by cation exchange, and remain on the surface of the skin, allowing them to be removed by simple washing with water. Approximately 11-fold fewer nanoparticles by mass are required to achieve the same efficacy as the chelating agent ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. Using nanoparticles with diameters smaller than 500 nm in topical creams may be an effective way to limit the exposure to metal ions that can cause skin irritation.
