The youthful habits and family attitudes of medical students who later developed or died from one of five disease states were different from those of healthy classmate controls to begin with. In medical school, the total disorder group had significantly more nervous tension, anxiety, and anger under stress, had more insomnia, smoked more cigarettes, and took alcoholic drinks more frequently. Individual disorder group means were significantly different from each other. The mental illness group showed the most nervous tension, depression, and anger under stress and the
malignant tumor
group the least. The
malignant tumor
group resembled the healthy control group in these respects. The suicide, mental illness, and
malignant tumor
groups had low mean scores for closeness to parents, while the hypertension and
coronary occlusion
group means were slightly higher than the control group mean. Thus psychologic differences in youth have predictive potential in regard to premature disease and death.

The effectiveness of dietary changes as a means of reducing blood lipid levels and ultimately controlling the development of coronary heart disease has been debated for many years. The possible effects of alcohol consumption on blood lipids were usually not considered. Our findings indicate a significant positive correlation between the extent of coronary artery occlusion and total plasma cholesterol levels and a negative association between the
coronary occlusion
and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Since moderate alcohol consumption increases the HDL cholesterol levels, one can also postulate that it affects coronary artery lesions. The attenuating effect of alcohol on the
coronary occlusion
was negated by sporadic drinking of large amounts of alcohol. In evaluating the possible effect of alcohol on coronary artery disease, it is also necessary to consider its addictive potential as well as other untoward sequelae of alcohol consumption such as hypertension, damage to the myocardium, and increased prevalence of
malignancies
.

The
cancer
hazard rate (or force of mortality) of all
cancer
survival curves of the 4th Report on End Results in
Cancer
, continuously declines. This pattern recurs also in breast cancer patients refusing treatment. The declining hazard rate is most conspicuous in
Cancer
and much less pronounced in other chronic diseases. In most of them the hazard rate actually increases. Such is obvious in any actuarial life table, in which the rising pattern represents aging and will therefore be denominated herewith as Aging pattern. It accompanies also many chronic diseases e.g. diabetes, following operation for peptic ulcer, young survivors from
coronary occlusion
, or cirrhosis. The
cancer
hazard rate exhibits a trend observable during regeneration and is viewed here to reflect a regenerative process operating in
cancer
which is ascribed to Neoplasia.

Patterns of habits of nervous tension (HNT) recorded by medical students who later developed
cancer
,
coronary occlusion
, hypertension, or mental illness, or who committed suicide, were compared with those of students who remained healthy 15 to 30 years later. Data came from the 25-item HNT Questionnaire previously reported. Unpaired t tests and two-group discriminant function analyses were the chief statistical methods used. Compared with those of the healthy group, the overall HNT patterns were significantly different for the
cancer
,
coronary occlusion
, mental illness and suicide groups. The overall pattern for the hypertension group did not reach significance. It therefore appears that youthful reactions to stress as self-reported in a checklist of habits of nervous tension reflect individual psychobiological differences that are linked with future health or disease.

The single apparent and potential benefit of hyperbaric oxygen is the great increase in the blood content of dissolved oxygen achieved when pure oxygen is breathed at increased pressure. The design of an economical chamber for this purpose is presented. A large number of physiological measurements (cardiac output, electroencephalogram, electrocardiogram, etc.) can be performed on patients or experimental animals within the chamber by use of unique electronic connections in the chamber wall which permits all recording equipment to remain outside. Expected arterial blood oxygen tensions have been achieved in patients studied at 2, 3, and 4 atmospheres. Safety features are emphasized. No complication has resulted in 113 dives over the period January to June 1964, one-half of which were for treatment of patients. The chamber has been used clinically as an adjunct to treatment of shock, certain forms of
malignancy
, anaerobic infections,
coronary occlusion
, and problems of ischemia, and for preservation of organs for transplantation.

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), one of the most common states of acquired hypercoagulability, is diagnosed by the persistent presence of antiphospholipid antibodies and recurrent episodes of vascular thrombosis. We present the case of a 39-year-old man late-presenting for cardiac rehabilitation treatment after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) performed for anteroseptal myocardial infarction. He was a nonsmoker, with no prior personal history of other cardiovascular diseases (CVD) or cardiometabolic syndrome. The 60% thrombotic occlusion of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) leading to the acute cardiac event was the only abnormality that was found. The only etiological explanation was the late measurement and the positive tests for antiphospholipid antibodies. In young patients with no history of thrombotic disorder, such as
cancer
, cardiovascular or metabolic diseases, the unexpected onset of myocardial infarction by thrombotic
coronary occlusion
can be attributed to silent, undiagnosed autoimmune condition.
