Polyglycolic acid sutures were used in 239 cases of intraocular surgery (164,6-0 size, 75, 7-0 size). Most of these (226) were cataract extractions. The results were excellent, with minimal complications. The 6-0 suture was somewhat stiff and associated with some tissue drag. The 7-0 size overcame these deficiencies and was considered the closest approach to date to the ideal absorbable suture. In addition, these appears to be an inhibition to bacterial penetration by PGA.

6-0 Dexon (polyglycolic acid-PGA) suture was used in 30 eyes of 25 patients in surgical procedures which included cataract extraction, strabismus surgery, and ocular plastic surgery. The suture was found to hold the wound firmly, was not absorbed prematurely, was absorbed completely at a predicted time, was relatively easy to use although the knots were large, did not cause any infection or undue tissue reaction, and did not result in any wound dehiscence or vitreous loss.

Quantification and biosynthesis of type I and type III collagens were determined in skin of control and Fraser mice (CatFraser mutation), which exhibit a genetically determined cataract. Skin organ cultures were labelled with [3H]proline. Pepsin-solubilized collagens were studied using three different approaches: (a) differential salt precipitation at neutral pH, followed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis; (b) differential salt precipitation at acid pH followed by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. (c) CNBr peptide analysis. These methods gave consistent and reproducible results, indicating a selective decrease of type I collagen in Fraser mouse skin as compared to control mouse skin. Metabolic labelling of skin organ cultures showed a decreased specific radioactivity of hydroxy[3H]proline in type I collagen of Fraser mouse skin. The concordant results of these experiments suggest a genetically determined alteration of interstitial collagen metabolism in the Fraser mutation apparently specifically concerning the expression of type I collagen gene(s).

There is little published data on the incidence of eye disease in Asian patients with psoriasis. We determined the frequency of ocular complications in Singaporean Asian patients with chronic plaque psoriasis and related these to extent and severity of psoriasis, family history, treatment and presence of arthritis. A cross-sectional prevalence investigation was carried out in 100 patients who received a comprehensive eye examination. Psoriasis extent and severity was graded by the Lattice System Physician's Global Assessment (LS-PGA). Two patients (four eyes) had uveitis, one of whom had psoriatic arthritis (2% incidence). Presence or absence of uveitis correlated with mean LS-PGA scores. Sixty-three patients had cataract unrelated to previous steroid or phototherapy treatment; in younger (<50 years) patients they were commoner than in those with higher (>5) LS-PGA scores. Three eyes in two patients (2% prevalence) had glaucomatous optic neuropathy unrelated to previous treatment, and comparable with expected population frequency. These findings, although limited by lack of data from a comparable control population, suggest that eye complications are common in Asian patients with psoriasis and eye symptoms should be elicited during history taking. Besides signs and symptoms of eye disease, an LS-PGA score of more than 5 should prompt referral for ophthalmological examination.
