-year-old man who had radial keratotomy performed two years previously presented with a painful, red right eye. Suppurative keratitis was found in one of the eight radial incisions and Staphylococcus epidermidis was isolated by culture. Lack of stromal healing of the infected incision and the presence of epithelial cysts in four other incisions in the same eye suggest that the cause of the corneal infection was loss of the epithelial barrier function because of epithelial breakdown.

-yr-old Caucasian man developed accelerated irreversible dense bilateral cataracts 4 wk after control of his newly diagnosed insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) and 12 wk after the onset of his symptoms. Although transitory cataracts have been identified in patients with newly diagnosed IDDM, there is no mention in the literature of irreversible
cataract
formation this soon after diagnosis (see ref. 1).

-year-old man presented with severe corneal cystinosis and steroid-related
cataract
bilaterally. Rather than combined
cataract
surgery and penetrating keratoplasty, the patient had uneventful phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation after which visual acuity improved to 66 in both eyes. The outcome indicates that conventional phacoemulsification is sufficient in these cases. A guarded prognosis is advised in patients with cystinosis having
cataract
surgery as the fundal view is often impaired and there may be associated maculopathy.

-year-old woman had crosslinking for keratoconus in the right eye; the left eye was scheduled for penetrating keratoplasty. Five days postoperatively, she presented with geographic epithelial keratitis and iritis. Analysis of tear samples by polymerase chain reaction confirmed the diagnosis. The patient was treated with oral steroids and acyclovir, with significant improvement. Two months postoperatively, the visual acuity was improved and there was no evidence of herpetic disease recurrence. Crosslinking can induce herpetic keratitis with iritis even in patients with no history of herpetic disease. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are essential for a favorable outcome.

-year-old man presented in the emergency department with noticeable deterioration of vision and a feeling of pressure in the right eye. He stated that he had injured his eye when a shot was fired while cleaning a blank cartridge pistol. Ultrasound examination revealed no evidence of intravitreal hemorrhage or detachment of the retina. Examination by computed tomography did not reveal the presence of a foreign body. The severely reduced visual acuity could most likely be attributed to a traumatic
cataract
. An in-depth psychiatric examination of the anamnesis revealed that the patient had deliberately injured himself with the weapon. The severe traumatic eye injury was the result of an unrecognized hebephrenic schizophrenia.

Several types of mutations in insulin receptor gene have been identified in patients with type A insulin resistance.
A 21
-year old girl was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy and
cataract
after 6 years of uncontrolled diabetes. Three nucleotide substitution mutations were detected, which may be associated with the patient's extreme insulin resistance.

-year-old patient presents to us with complaints of blurred vision and photophobia in the left eye, with an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/100 improving to 20/30 with pinhole and diagnostic rigid gas permeable lens trial. He had a history of trauma with subsequent
cataract
extraction, with residual irregular astigmatism and traumatic mydriasis. XtraFocus Pinhole intraocular lens (Morcher) was implanted in the left eye. One week postoperatively, the left eye uncorrected visual acuity improved to 20/30, uncorrected intermediate visual acuity improved to 20/40, and uncorrected near visual acuity improved to J4. The glare and photophobia resolved completely. Surprisingly, the patient complained of severely poor vision in dim illumination. His vision was limited to bare perception of objects and hand movements close to the face. He started facing difficulties in major activities such as driving at night and in dark ambient surroundings such as movie theatres, which persisted to the extent of necessitating explantation of the implant.

Aqueous humor (AH) proteins are involved in many physiological and pathological processes of the eye. The proteome analysis of AH is important to understand its physiological and pathophysiological functions. In the present study, AH samples obtained from 21
cataract
volunteers were pooled together. After high-pH RPLC offline separation, the pooled sample was analyzed by LC-MS/MS to provide a comprehensive profile of AH proteome. The function analysis was provided by the GO and
IPA
annotation. In order to determine whether the AH proteome can reflect the pathophysiological changes of the disease, DIA technology was used to analyze the AH samples obtained from three neovascular glaucoma (NVG) patients (six samples) before and after drug treatment. The differential proteins were validated by PRM technology in an independent group (14 samples). In the AH proteome database, 802 proteins were identified, and 318 proteins were identified for the first time. Furthermore, 480 proteins were quantified based on the peak intensity-based semiquantification (iBAQ), which ranged by approximately 7 orders of magnitude. These proteins are primarily involved in immunity- and inflammation-related pathways. The differential AH proteomic analysis in NVG treatment revealed that the AH proteome can reflect the pathophysiological changes of drug treatment. Angiogenesis and thrombus coagulation progression are deeply involved in NVG treatment. The present experiment provided a comprehensive AH proteome analysis and expanded the profile of human AH proteome. The differential AH proteomic analysis of NVG treatment indicated that AH proteome can reflect the pathophysiological changes in drug intervention.
