extraction was wearing her aphakic lens successfully until she switched her lens-soaking solution to an isotonic solution of boric acid, potassium chloride, and sodium

preserved with benzalkonium chloride and edetic acid. After three days her eye became inflamed and vision decreased. No endothelial damage was apparent and the anterior chamber showed 2+ cell and flare reaction. Three weeks after removal of the lens and fitting with an aphakic lens visual acuity was 6/9 (20/30). Study of the preservative by a semiquantitative dilution method together with the clinical evidence in this case proved the cytotoxic effect of benzolkonium chloride when used to sterilize soft contact lenses.

-Ringer or BSS PLUS. Retinas incubated with BSS PLUS had higher rates of aerobic and anaerobic glycolysis and more ATP than did retinas incubated with BSS. There were no significant differences, however, in the glutathione content of retinas incubated with BSS PLUS and BSS. These results show that retinal energy metabolism is maintained better with BSS PLUS because this irrigating solution contains glucose and bicarbonate.

We report a 83 year-old woman with dementia. She was apparently well until December of 1993 when she was 81-year-old. At that time, she was operated or her
cataract
. Her post operative course was uneventful, however, shortly after her operation, she had an onset of memory loss and abnormal behavior. She showed a fluctuating course in her mental disturbance. In 1995, her dementia worsened with nocturnal agitation. She was admitted to our service on June 12, 1995. She was alert and her blood pressure was 140/100 mmHg. She showed recent memory loss and disorientation to time. Motor wise, she was unable to stand unsupported. Her gait with support showed small steps and a wide base. She was bradykinetic and ataxic in her finger-to-nose and heel-to-knee test, however, no rigidity or tremor was noted. Her MRI showed T2-high signal lesions in both medial thalamic areas, in the right occipital lobe, and in the bilateral cerebral white matters as well as in the basal ganglia. She was discharged for out-patient follow up on July 3, 1995. Four days after the discharge, she showed declining responses to stimuli and she developed dyspnea on July 14, 1995. She was admitted again on the same day. Her body temperature was 38.5 degrees C and moist rales were heard in the left lung field. She appeared drowsy and no verbal response was obtained; no apparent motor palsy was noted. Blood count showed leukocytosis (14,300/ml). Blood gas analysis under 61 of oxygen inhalation through a mask was as follows: pH 7.460, PCO2 39.6 mmHg, PO2 67 mmHg, and
HCO3
-28.5 mEq/l. Two days after admission, she developed a convulsion in her left arm and she became unconscious. Her EEG showed periodically recurring lateralized epileptic discharges on the right fronto-central areas. Her subsequent course was complicated by status epilepticus and respiratory distress. She died on July 26, 1995. She was discussed in a neurological CPC. The chief discussant arrived at a conclusion that she suffered from multi-infarct dementia. Bilateral thalamic infarctions were considered to have played a significant role in her dementia. Post-mortem examination revealed subcortical leukoencephalopathy of Binswanger's type and cerebral infarctions in the thalamic and basal ganglia regions and in the right occipital lobe. In addition, she showed isolated angitis of the central nervous system involving mainly in the small arteries located in the superficial areas of the brain and the spinal cord. This patient was interesting in that despite relatively mild leukoaraiosis in MRI, post-mortem examination revealed profound pathologic changes in the subcortical white matters. In addition, she showed the isolated angitis of the CNS. The cause and the clinical correlates of her angitis were unclear.

exchanger. The aim of the present study is to investigate the possible role of the anion-exchange inhibitor, disulfonic stilbene (SITS), in the selenite-induced catarogenesis in the rat pups. Wistar albino rats (8-10 d old) were separated into three groups: one control and two experimental. The first experimental group was injected subcutaneously with a single dose of 30 nmol sodium selenite/g body weight. The second experimental group was injected with a single dose of 10 nmol SITS/g body weight 15 min before the same dose selenite injection. The control group did not have any injections. The stage of

A 58-year-old woman had successful phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in January 2001. Two years later, nonpenetrating glaucoma surgery with mitomycin-C (MMC) 0.02% was performed for uncontrolled glaucoma. Two months later, opacification of the anterior IOL surface was observed. The IOL was removed and a hydrophobic acrylic AcrySof IOL (Alcon) implanted. The opacified IOL was studied by flame atomic absorption spectrometry, which showed the presence of calcium
carbonate
. A new IOL of the same model was placed in an aqueous solution with calcium
carbonate
and basic pH, and the same opacification developed. We hypothesize that the change in aqueous humor pH after glaucoma surgery and the characteristics of the IOL precipitated deposition of calcium.

This preliminary report was attempted to compare the chemical components of mineral deposits on the surfaces of an opacified intraocular lens (IOL) and a calcified senile cataractous lens (SCL) by vibrational spectral diagnosis. An opacified intraocular lens (IOL) was obtained from a 65-year-old male patient who had a significant decrease in visual acuity 2-years after an ocular IOL implantation. Another SCL with grayish white calcified plaque on the subcapsular cortex was isolated from a 79-year-old male patient with complicated
cataract
after
cataract
surgery. Optical light microscope was used to observe both samples and gross pictures were taken. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman microspectroscopic techniques were employed to analyze the calcified deposits. The curve-fitting algorithm using the Gaussian function was also used to quantitatively estimate the chemical components in each deposit. The preliminary results of spectral diagnosis indicate that the opacified IOL mainly consisted of the poorly crystalline, immature non-stoichiometric hydroxyapatite (HA) with higher content of type B carbonated apatites. However, the calcified plaque deposited on the SCL was comprised of a mature crystalline stoichiometric HA having higher contents of type A and type B
carbonate
apatites. More case studies should be examined in future.
