Twenty-five patients operated for cataract were examined for secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) content of tears by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique. The patients were examined before operation and throughout the post-operative period. The pre-operative level was 795 micrograms/ml, significantly dropping on the first post-operative day to 461 micrograms/ml. Thereafter the level increased to pre-operative value, and finally decreased once more to half the pre-operative level on the 12th post-operative day. The first drop in sIgA concentration is proposed to be a dilution effect by a significantly increased tear volume as determined by the Schirmer test. The reason for the second drop is up to now unexplained, but might be the result of an exhaustion of the sIgA production by the tear glands.

The results of metabolic parameters determination, which characterize the state of protein's metabolism, membranes stability, cell s system of antioxidant deficiency at the patients with senile cataract are presented with the purpose to make clear the differences between biochemical mechanisms of lenses clouding progress at the elderly persons without and on the background of different somatic pathology. Our results have shown that disturbances of membranes structural-functional parameters and the lowering of activity glutathione metabolic system is more expressed at the patients with accompanying diseases of cardio-vascular system, gastro-intestinal tract, liver and chronic alcohol intoxication. The exhaustion of antioxidant system is observed at the patients with senile cataract in the cases of accompanying disease of liver and chronic alcohol intoxication unlike the patients without accompanying somatic diseases. Diseases of cardio-vascular's system, gastrointestinal tract and liver effort the metabolic disturbances in blood of the patients with senile cataract.

The eye is said to be one of the most sensitive organs to microwave heating. According to previous studies, the possibility of microwave-induced cataract formation has been experimentally investigated in rabbit and monkey eyes, but not for the human eye due to ethical reasons. In the present study, the temperature elevation in the lens, the skin around the eye and the core temperature of numerical human and rabbit models for far-field and near-field exposures at 2.45 GHz are investigated. The temperature elevations in the human and rabbit models were compared with the threshold temperatures for inducing cataracts, thermal pain in the skin and reversible health effects such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke. For plane-wave exposure, the core temperature elevation is shown to be essential both in the human and in the rabbit models as suggested in the international guidelines and standards. For localised exposure of the human eye, the temperature elevation of the skin was essential, and the lens temperature did not reach its threshold for thermal pain. On the other hand, the lens temperature elevation was found to be dominant for the rabbit eye.
