In order to study the health status of 3,333 old people (over 60) in Chengdu city, a survey was carried out from May 1996 to Nov. 1996. Results revealed that 79.4% of old people had a history of chronic diseases. The first ten common chronic diseases were stated as follows: rheumatic arthritis, hypertension, benign prostatic hypertrophy, chronic bronchitis,
cataract
, chronic
gastritis
, osteoarthrosis, asthma and diabetes mellitus. There were significant differences of body weight index, vision and auditus disorder among old people according to their age (P < 0.01). As ageing grows, old people's physical condition and daily-life-capacity decline. In order to improve the quality of life among the aged, following aspects as popularizing health education on self care, strengthening programs on prevention and care of chronic diseases, expanding the medical and nursing services in community and easier access to hospitalization etc should be promoted.

An open labeled clinical trial aimed at assessing the efficacy and safety of pulse intravenous cyclophosphamide with daily oral prednisolone in the treatment of pemphigus was carried out. Twenty-six patients (12 men, 14 women; mean age, 48.4 years), comprising 25 cases with pemphigus vulgaris and 1 with pemphigus vegetans (< 10% body surface area involvement) who did not achieve adequate control on corticosteroids with or without other adjuvants were included. After baseline evaluation, monthly intravenous boluses of cyclophosphamide (15 mg/kg) along with daily oral prednisolone (starting dose 1 mg/kg/day, tapered according to clinical response) were administered. Patients were assessed monthly for clinical activity and side-effects. All patients experienced significant clinical improvement within 1 month of starting treatment. Healing of skin and mucosal lesions occurred respectively at mean durations of 2.1 and 3.6 months. Three weeks to 8 months later, 9 patients had recurrences of activity on tapering/withdrawal of prednisolone, mainly in the oral mucosa. Side effects of treatment included amenorrhea (3 patients), microscopic hematuria (3) which cleared with co-administration of mesna, vomiting (1), weight gain (10),
gastritis
(1), and
cataract
(2). It is concluded that treatment with monthly intravenous cyclophosphamide boluses along with daily oral prednisolone clears lesions of pemphigus with < 10 percent body surface involvement, and this may be an alternative regimen for pemphigus. Monitoring for adverse effects is essential.

A case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome in a healthy 58-year-old woman who underwent
cataract
surgery under topical anesthesia is reported. General skin erosions developed 2 hours after surgery. The patient's family doctor diagnosed that she was allergic to seafood. One month later, she underwent phacoemul-sification surgery in the other eye. After surgery, she developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome with general skin lesions, erythema nodosa, genital mucosa erosion, oral ulcers,
gastritis
, and conjunctiva edema. The symptoms subsided 2 weeks later after immunotherapy. Although nonpreserved anesthesia (2% lidocaine) has seldom been reported to cause allergic reactions via the intravenous or the intramuscular route, it is possible that an intracameral injection of 0.2% lidocaine during
cataract
surgery can induce Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Careful evaluation of the patient's history and proper treatment were recommended to prevent additional complications.
