An adenocarcinoma in the seminal vesicles of a 15-month-old male Wistar rat from a 30-month inhalation study is described. The rat was killed because of cachexia, apathy and a large palpable mass in the abdominal cavity. Macroscopic examination of the abdominal cavity revealed a 3.8 cm x 3.2 cm yellow-grey to pink mass, firm to soft in consistency. The cut section revealed cystic spaces. Histologically, the mass consisted of epithelial cells arranged in glandular and solid patterns with abundant amounts of connective tissue. Epithelial tumour cells were round-to-cylindrical with round-to-oval basophilic nuclei and one or two prominent nucleoli and a distinct eosinophilic cytoplasm. The glandular structure contained clusters of macrophages in their lumen with eosinophilic cytoplasm and indented nuclei. Extensive necrosis and reactive inflammation were present. The histological features of the small nodules in the pancreas and on the surface of the liver, rectum and urinary bladder resembled those of the primary tumour in the seminal vesicles. Based on these criteria, the neoplasm (mass) was diagnosed as an adenocarcinoma of the seminal vesicles. The immunohistological examination confirmed the diagnosis, i.e. immunostaining was positive for cytokeratins (4, 7, 14, 15, 18, and 19), vimentin, PCNA, and ED(1).

Three dogs (two Rottweilers and a Flat-coated retriever) showed various neurological signs, including apathy, depression, circling, a partial decrease in functions associated with cranial nerves, seizures, hyperaesthesia, proprioceptive deficits, and increased spinal reflexes. In all three cases, necropsy revealed a solid, distinct, white mass in the brain and multiple, poorly demarcated, firm nodular proliferations in the lung; in one case the liver was also affected. Histopathological examination showed loosely aggregated, pleomorphic cells, with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm. The neoplastic cells sometimes contained vacuoles or phagocytized cells. Binucleated and multinucleated giant cells, and mitotic figures, were common. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells reacted strongly for lysozyme and vimentin, but there was no reaction for S-100 protein, cytokeratin, CD3 or CD79a. The histological and immunohistochemical examinations indicated a histiocytic origin of the tumour cells and malignant histiocytosis was therefore diagnosed.

Spontaneous meningiomas are extremely rare tumors in small laboratory animals, except in some strains of rats and in the B6C3F1 mouse. We report the case of a male CD-1 mouse in poor health condition, with severe apathy and partial paresis of hindlegs. No macroscopic lesion was noticed at necropsy. Microscopic examination revealed the presence of a malignant meningioma (approximately 3mm in diameter) at the distal lumbar level of the spinal cord, invading the vertebral canal, and bilaterally the ventral and dorsal nerve roots and the dorsal root ganglia. The tumor displayed highly cellular sheets of polygonal cells with a well-delineated, abundant, eosinophilic cytoplasm and scarce fibrovascular stroma; epithelioid and sarcomatous areas were also present. The mitotic activity was moderate. Tumor cells expressed vimentin immunoreactivity and were negative for periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), silver impregnation for reticulin, chromogranin A, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), cytokeratin (CK) and S-100 protein. The diagnosis of malignant spinal meningioma was based on the morphologic features of the neoplasm, the evidence of local invasion and the immunohistochemical results.
