A patient given bismuth nitrate in the recommended dose range over 16 months developed
panic attacks
and a major depressive syndrome and, after 15 months, a myoclonic
encephalopathy
resembling Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. He recovered four months after bismuth had been discontinued. Bismuth preparations are becoming popular in the treatment of gastritis; close attention to neurological and psychiatric symptoms seems mandatory.

Individuals that may be especially susceptible to
panic attacks
in the rehabilitation setting are patients who have suffered traumatic brain injuries, post-concussion syndrome, lesions, or
encephalopathy
. An individual is described who suffered a traumatic brain injury and was determined to have suffered a
panic attack
during his rehabilitation stay. The manifestations of
panic attacks
are described, using the case report as an example. The psychological aetiology of panic disorders is also reviewed, and treatment options using four major classes of neuropharmacologic agents: benzodiazepines, tricyclic antidepressants, monoamide oxidase inhibitors, and serotonin reuptake inhibitors, are discussed. Given the increasing incidence and survival of patients with traumatic brain injuries, the complications of
panic attacks
and disorders will become more important; they are a serious condition that can affect an individual's lifestyle, employment, and relationships, and increase the risk of suicide. Rehabilitation specialists should be aware of the manifestations and management of
panic attacks
and come to appreciate that recognition of this treatable condition is important during all stages of rehabilitation.

Overall 300 patients aged between 35 to 40 years, suffering from constitutional vasoneurosis (CVN) were examined. The analysis of the time-related course of psychopathological manifestations in the above patients was found out to be of prognostic value: in a debut of CVN with vasovegetative disorders there develops discirculatory
encephalopathy
, that of CVN presenting with neurotic syndromes leads to different manifestations of anxious syndrome,
panic attacks
included.

Voltage-gated potassium channel antibody
encephalopathy
, a rare cause of limbic
encephalopathy
, typically presents with memory impairment and seizures. Psychiatric symptoms have not been emphasised in the literature. Here we describe a 58-year-old man who presented with
panic attacks
and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures and, later on, developed delusions and hallucinations and then confusion. He was found to have antibodies to voltage-gated potassium channels. Treatment with immuno-modulatory therapy resulted in almost complete recovery.
