Four cases of primary intranasal encephalocele are presented. Three of the patients had been treated for nasal polyps. One of these three patients presented with persistent cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhea after fourth a polypectomy, another with recurrent CSF rhinorrhea and
bacterial meningitis
following a second polypectomy, and the third case with recurrence of meningitis, also following polypectomy.
Recurrent bacterial meningitis
was the mode of presentation in the fourth case. Encephalocele was the isolated abnormality in three, but the fourth had a degree of associated hypertelorism. The diagnosis of encephalocele should be considered in any patient with a nasal polyp, especially in children and in patients with recurrent
bacterial meningitis
, with or without rhinorrhea, in the absence of cranial trauma or surgery, or in the absence of external craniospinal anatomical defects.

Recurrent bacterial meningitis
is a rare phenomenon and generally poses a considerable diagnostic challenge to the clinician. Ultimately, a structured approach and early diagnosis of any underlying pathology are crucial to prevent further episodes and improve the overall outcome for the affected individual. In this article, we are reviewing the existing literature on this topic over the last two decades, encompassing 363 cases of recurrent
bacterial meningitis
described in 144 publications. Of these cases, 214 (59%) were related to anatomical problems, 132 (36%) were related to immunodeficiencies, and 17 (5%) were related to parameningeal infections. The review includes a detailed discussion of the underlying pathologies and microbiological aspects as well as recommendations for appropriate diagnostic pathways for investigating this unusual entity.

Recurrent bacterial meningitis
is an uncommon but life-threatening condition. The aim of this study was to evaluate the demographic, clinical, microbiological, and radiological features of recurrent
bacterial meningitis
in children. Fourteen patients (10 male, 4 female) treated for recurrent
bacterial meningitis
were reviewed. The mean age of the patients was 87 months (range: 6 months to 13 years). There were 67 episodes of meningitis documented in these 14 patients. Six patients had developmental anatomical defects, five had traumatic anatomical defects and three had primary immune deficiency diseases as predisposing conditions. We suggest that, in a case of recurrent meningitis, a pediatrician should question and examine the patient carefully in search of a possible anatomical defect or immunodeficiency. Vaccination and surgical treatment of the anatomical defects may be important.

Recurrent bacterial meningitis
is not a common disease and makes physicians seek underlying predisposing factors which can result from anatomic anomalies or immunodeficiency. In this paper we present a boy with recurrent
bacterial meningitis
with the history of trauma and sensorineural hearing loss. Mondini dysplasia was demonstrated with computed homographic scans (CT-Scan) of temporal bones.

Recurrent bacterial meningitis
is an uncommon disease of childhood. It occurs most often in children who have an underlying predisposing disorder that can result from anatomic fistula or immunodeficiency. Cochleovestibular dysplasia is a rare malformation of the inner ear that is often associated with translabyrinthine cerebrospinal fistula and then can cause recurrent
bacterial meningitis
. We report an unusual case of recurrent meningitis revealing cochleovestibular dysplasia in a 9-year-old child. The malformation was confirmed by imaging and the child had surgery. The outcome was favourable with no recurrence of meningitis during the 3 years after the operation.

Recurrent bacterial meningitis
is very rare phenomenon in paediatric age group. Finding the aetiology of recurrent meningitis often poses diagnostic challenge to clinicians. Among the several aetiologies, structural deficiencies at the base of skull, congenital or acquired, are readily correctable ones and hence it's imperative to find out the location of the gap in order to surgically repair it. We report the diagnostic dilemma faced while managing a 15-year-old boy with recurrent pneumococcal meningitis. Aetiology could only be found after exclusion of immunodeficiency and performing a series of imaging studies. CT cisternogram clinched the diagnosis and patient was cured successfully. A single imaging modality, be it CT/MRI scan, although proven to be better than others according to literature, might not be sufficient while finding the cause of recurrent
bacterial meningitis
in an immunocompetent host.
