Sinonasal natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma (NKTCL) is closely associated with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and expresses latent

(LMP)-1 and EB nuclear antigen (EBNA)-1, i.e., latency II of EBV infection. Angioinvasion by neoplastic cells is a characteristic feature of NKTCL, but its mechanism is unknown. To elucidate the molecular mechanism of angio-invasiveness in NKTCL, expression of cell adhesion molecules and chemokine receptors at mRNA and protein levels was examined using real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry in 17 NKTCL together with 10 diffuse large
B-cell lymphoma
(DLBL) and 9 non-neoplastic nasal mucosa as controls. EBV DNA was detected in 14 of 16 NKTCL examined, and 7 of these 14 expressed LMP-1. mRNA expression levels of integrin subunits alpha4, alpha L, alpha M, and beta2 were significantly higher in NKTCL than non-neoplastic controls. Integrin subunits alpha2 and alpha M were expressed at a significantly higher level in NKTCL with angioinvasion than those without. Expression level of alpha M was significantly higher in 7 cases of NKTCL with LMP-1 expression than 7 without. Immunohistochemistry showed expression of these molecules in NKTCL cells. These findings suggest that EBV infection might be involved in the pathogenesis of angioinvasion of NKTCL through up-regulation of alpha M by LMP-1.

-1 (LMP-1), and Ki-67. Expression of CD10 and CD20 were associated with better overall survival (OS; P = .009 and P = .04, respectively). Expression of CD20 was associated with longer disease-free survival (DFS; P = .03), whereas expression of CD138/Syn-1 was associated with shorter DFS (P = .03). OS and DFS were worse in patients with immunophenotypic profiles related to post-germinal center (GC) differentiation (BCL-6 and CD10 negative, MUM1/IRF4 and/or CD138/Syn-1 positive) when compared with GC differentiation (P = .01). When controlled for age-adjusted International Prognostic Index (IPI), prior AIDS-defining illness (ADI), and year of ARL diagnosis, a post-GC differentiation remained significantly associated with poor OS and DFS. Expression of CD10 was associated with a preserved immunocompetence, whereas CD20 was less frequent in patients developing ARL while on highly active antiretroviral therapy (P = .04). In summary, lack of CD20 or CD10 expression and a post-germinal center signature are associated with a worse prognosis in ARL.

To clarify the confusion surrounding the diagnosis of cutaneous lymphoid hyperplasia (CLH) that was formerly described as lymphadenosis benigna cutis, lymphocytoma cutis, or lymphocytic infiltration of Jessner and to assess whether newly recognized diagnoses, such as cutaneous marginal zone lymphoma and pseudolymphomatous folliculitis (PLF), may have been overlooked, we reexamined 55 Japanese cases of nonepidermotropic lymphoproliferative disorder that had previously been diagnosed as "cutaneous pseudolymphoma." Cutaneous marginal zone lymphoma, which represented 7.3% of the total, was distinguished from CLH by the presence of patchy or diffuse proliferation of centrocyte-like cells, plasma cells at the periphery of the lymphocytic infiltration, monotypic restriction of the light chains, and gene rearrangement of the immunoglobulin heavy chain. Pseudolymphomatous folliculitis was identified by the presence of activated pilosebaceous units with abundant CD1a-and S-100 protein-positive T-cell-activated dendritic cells. Of the cases that were reassessed, 34.5% were PLF.

Here, we have addressed the mechanisms of interaction between CIDR1alpha and EBV in the context of B cells. We show that CIDR1alpha binds to the EBV-positive B cell line Akata and increases the number of cells switching to the viral lytic cycle as measured by green fluorescent protein (GFP) expression driven by a lytic promoter. The virus production in CIDR1alpha-exposed cultures was directly proportional to the number of GFP-positive Akata cells (lytic EBV) and to the increased expression of the EBV lytic promoter BZLF1. Furthermore, CIDR1alpha stimulated the production of EBV in peripheral blood mononuclear cells derived from healthy donors and children with BL. Our results suggest that P. falciparum antigens such as CIDR1alpha can directly induce EBV reactivation during malaria infection that may increase the risk of BL development for children living in malaria-endemic areas. To our knowledge, this is the first report to show that a microbial protein can drive a latently infected B cell into EBV replication.

ALPD tumor cells were often heterogeneous in size in accordance with the differential expression of EBV latent genes at the single cell level. LMP1-expressing tumor cells were typically large in size and selectively positive for CCL17 and CCL22. CCR4(+) cells and forkhead box protein 3(+) regulatory T cells were abundantly present, and the majority of forkhead box protein 3(+) cells were CCR4(+). Collectively, our data show production of CCL17 and CCL22 by LMP1(+) large-sized tumor cells and accumulation of CCR4-expressing cells including regulatory T cells in ALPD.

), 5 hyaline-vascular Castleman disease, and 5 reactive lymph nodes with follicular hyperplasia. In all cases, qualitatively and quantitatively podoplanin represented a highly effective marker for detection of FDCs, with staining intensity equal to or greater than that observed for other FDC markers. This study demonstrates that podoplanin is an excellent marker for FDCs and adds to its growing list of diagnostic applications.
