B-cell lymphoma
cell line (Raji) was depressed post-ABMT. Prolonged (28 days) in vivo rIL-2/IFN alpha immunotherapy enhanced ADCC activity of the eosinophils and brought them to normal levels. Similarly, rIL-2/IFN alpha immunotherapy enhanced the depressed cytotoxic activity of neutrophils post-ABMT to normal levels. Thus, eosinophils and neutrophils from rIL-2/IFN alpha-treated ABMT recipients may be targeted toward tumor cells by antibody, and express tumoricidal activity. No effect of rIL-2/IFN alpha was observed on monocyte-dependent ADCC activity which remained normal post-ABMT. We conclude that in addition to their effect on lymphocytes, cytokine-mediated immunotherapy consisting of subcutaneous low doses of riL-2 and IFN alpha may mediate their therapeutic effects in cancer therapy by increasing the number of eosinophils and enhancing the antitumor activity of eosinophils and neutrophils, provided that tumor-specific or tumor-associated antibodies are present.

Omenn syndrome is a variant of SCID, inherited as an autosomal recessive disorder, and characterized by severe eczematoid dermatitis,
eosinophilia
, elevated serum IgE and a distinctive histology in enlarged lymph nodes. The etiology of Omenn syndrome is unknown, however, unlike other forms of SCID; patients with Omenn syndrome have activated T lymphocytes in their circulation capable of non-MHC restricted cytotoxic function. Recently, it has been observed that the use of immunosuppressive therapy, particularly cyclosporine, can modify the clinical manifestations of the disorder. Prior to the use of bone marrow transplantation this disease was universally fatal. Death typically occurred in infancy as the result of opportunistic infections and/or malignancies, most notably lymphomas. While bone marrow transplantation has become quite successful for many phenotypes of SCID, even with the use of alternative donors other than histocompatible siblings, in Omenn syndrome it remains a challenge. In our experience, patients with Omenn syndrome exhibit a higher incidence of Gram negative sepsis, before and during transplantation, and carry a significant risk of post-transplant rejection when compared with patients with other phenotypes of SCID. We report the results of six patients treated with bone marrow transplantation from alternative donors, three had unrelated donors (URD) and three had haplo-identical parental donors. Five of the six patients achieved complete and/or durable donor cell engraftment and only one patient experienced acute GVHD. Initial cytogenetic evaluation by interphase FISH for BCR-ABL, to rule out a translocation 9;22, showed a variant signal pattern consistent with rearrangement of BCR at 22q11.2, but not ABL at 9q34. Analysis of the patient's cDNA by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for BCR-ABL was negative. Cytogenetic analysis showed an abnormal karyotype with rearrangement of chromosomes 4 and 22. PCR amplification and subsequent sequence analysis demonstrated an in-frame 5'-BCR/3'-PDGFRA fusion in the patient's cDNA. PDGFRA encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase and shares structural and organizational homology with the KIT and CSf1R receptor genes. However, although the incidence of MPD involving translocations of PDGFRB has been well established, to our knowledge there are only two previous reports describing a BCR-PDGFRA fusion gene, in 3 patients diagnosed with atypical CML. Immunosuppressed patients with schistosomiasis may have diminished egg excretion. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion since stool test results may be negative and intestinal biopsies may be needed to make the diagnosis.

This review summarizes the new findings on salivary gland pathology under the following categories: immunohistochemistry; molecular genetics; newly recognized tumour types; known tumour entities with new findings; and progression of salivary gland tumours. In the application of immunohistochemistry, CD117 can aid in highlighting the luminal cell component of various salivary gland tumours, whereas p63 or maspin can aid in highlighting the abluminal cell component. A high Ki67 index remains the most useful marker to predict adverse outcome in salivary gland carcinoma. Specific chromosomal translocations are recognized in pleomorphic adenoma (with translocation involving PLGA1 or HMGA2 gene) and mucoepidermoid carcinoma (with MECT1-MAML2 gene fusion). and tissue infiltration by eosinophils are frequent findings in Hodgkin lymphoma, but they are extremely rare in
B-cell lymphoma
. Reported herein is a case of follicular lymphoma with extensive lymph node infiltration by eosinophils. The patient was a 71-year-old woman who had a mass in the vicinity of the pancreas found on routine ultrasonography. Subsequent CT indicated several enlarged abdominal lymph nodes, although superficial lymph nodes were not palpable. Two swollen mesenteric lymph nodes were excised to determine the cause of the lymphadenopathy. Histology indicated extensive infiltration of numerous eosinophils to the interfollicular area, especially in the dilated sinuses. The lymphoid follicles were relatively small, had inconspicuous germinal centers, and were scattered between dilated sinuses. Based on the histology, immunohistochemistry, and chromosomal abnormality, a diagnosis of follicular lymphoma was made. Expression of interleukin-3 (IL-3), IL-5, eotaxin, eotaxin-2, and eotaxin-3 was investigated on reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction of the lymph node tissue, but none of the mRNA expression levels were elevated. This was a unique case of follicular lymphoma with extensive eosinophil infiltration, and to the best of the authors' knowledge this is the first such case ever reported.
