The purpose of this study was to evaluate the side-effects of differentiated thyroid carcinoma after treatment with 3.7-7.4 GBq of 131I. A total of 342 patients were treated with 131I from May, 1989 to January, 1999. The acute side-effects, the short-term and long-term side-effects were analyzed. The follow-up lasted 1-10 years with an average of 5.4 years. The results showed that thyroiditis occurred predominantly in the patients with a rate of 131I uptake > 30%, whereas sialoadenitis occurred more prevalently in the patients with a rate of 131I uptake < 30% (P < 0.001). The rates of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and gastralgia were 12.2%, 5.2%, 3.5% and 2.7% respectively. There were no significant changes in the hemogram after treatment, compared against that before treatment. The overall rates of transient platelet abnormalities and leukopenia were 10.4% and 4.0% respectively, but the rates of the abnormalities in the patients with cumulative doses of 131I > 18.5 GBq were significantly higher than those in patients with cumulative doses of 131 I < 18.5 GBq. The lower rate of acute and short-term side-effects and the absence of long-term side-effects in this study indicate that 131I can be safely used to treat differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

In the end of the Eastern Han dynasty, Hua Tuo and Zhang Zhongjing explored deeply and separately the diagnostic and therapeutic principles of cold pathogenic diseases, though they didn't know each other. This was not only because of their excelsior spirit, but also showed the severity of cold pathogenic diseases at that time. The doctors in past dynasties researched and inherited the achievements of Zhongjing's Shang han lun (Treatise on Cold Pathogenic Diseases). The theory of Hua Tuo's "transformation of diseases by six parts" was different from Su wen re lun (Discussion on Heat in Plain Questions). It doesn't put 6 - channel theory equally, but giving a series of rules for diagnosing the syndromes transforming from superficies to interior, from the surface to the bottom, and from upper to lower which is the beginning of wei - qi - ying - xue differential diagnosis and three - jiao differential diagnosis. Hua Tuo treated cold pathogenic disorders by "sweating, emesis, and catharsis" with abundant clinical approaches. Hua Tuo's idea of "rotten stomach with petechiae" was valued by scholars of warm disorders and of clinical significance even today.

A 55-year-old male patient was hospitalized with severe nausea, vomiting and icterus. Laboratory testing showed hepatocellular damage. After exhaustive testing, the exclusion diagnosis of a toxic hepatitis was reached. There was a strong temporal correlation with the ingestion of Hong Hua 29, a preparation from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). This medication had been started twelve days prior to the first appearance of symptoms. The existing drug regimen included gabapentin (Neurontin), esomeprazole (Nexium) and prednisone (Prednison Streuli) for the therapy of an acute sensory and motor neuropathy of unknown aetiology. After cessation of Hong Hua 29, gabapentin and esomeprazole, transaminase levels started to declined and normalized within three months. According to the Swissmedic criteria of imputability, a causal correlation between the observed symptoms and the administration of Hong Hua 29 is possible.
