In August-October 1973 several
NAG
vibrio strains were isolated for the first time in our country from clinical cases of acute intestinal disturbances. The patients were admitted to hospital being clinically suspect of dysenteric syndrome or alimentary toxiinfection (nausea,
vomiting
, abdominal colics, tenesms, mucosanguinolent stools, aqeous stools from 4-5 up to 20 in 24 hours, with signs of dehydration).
NAG
vibrios were isolated from all the cultures in, practically, pure cultures. Epidemiologic survey in the village of B resulted in isolation of the same
NAG
vibrio strains from the samples collected from the direct contacts and drinking water sources. Therefore,
NAG
vibrios can unquestionably cause a diarrheic disease and it will be necessary to extend the bacteriologic diangosis also in this direction in all cases of diarrhea of "unknown etiology".

Fifteen patients aged over 65 years of age with advanced non-small-cl lung cancer (mean age = 70.7, stage IIIb: IV = 4:11) were treated with combination chemotherapy consisting of Cisplatin (50 or 80 mg/m2) and a vinca-alkaloid (Vindesine 3 mg/m2 or Etoposide 80 mg/m2). The effectiveness and side effects of this cisplatin therapy in different combinations of vinca-alkaloid regimens (Vindesine vs Etoposide) were examined. The mean dose of Cisplatin in the Etoposide combination group (75.2 mg/m2) was significantly higher than that in the Vindesine combination group (54.3 mg/m2) (p less than 0.01). A notable reduction the tumor size was observed in 25% of the Etoposide group, only. The 6-month survival rate and one-year survival rate were respectively 85.7%, 57.1% in the Vindesine + Cisplatin group, and 87.5%, 50% in the Etoposide + Cisplatin group. The common side effects were nausea,
vomiting
, anorexia, and alopecia. These symptoms were either alleviated by antiemetic drugs or followed by spontaneous recovery. Leucopenia, anemia and thrombocytopenia were found in both groups, and there was no difference in the time course of myelosuppression between the two groups. The extent of nephrotoxicity was assessed by creatinine clearance rate. Its decrease in the Vindesine group (60.1----38.9 ml/min) was higher than that in the Etoposide group (64.9----48.9 ml/min), while there was no significant change in BUN, serum creatinine and urine
NAG
between the two groups. There were no cases in which chemotherapy schedules had to be interrupted due to myelosuppression and nephrotoxicity.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Between the period January 1991 to June 1993, there were 23,976,238 travellers who arrived from overseas to Narita Airport, of which 20,501 stool specimens were collected from diarrheal patients for bacteriological examination, and infectious agents were detected from 2,751 cases (13.4%) including 250 cases (1.2%) of Vibrio cholerae non-O1. Countries suspected of infection of these patients were Thailand, the most in number, and followed by Indonesia, India and so on these mostly distributed in South-east or South Asia. About fifty percent of the patients were associated with abdominal pain and some with
vomiting
or fever. Diarrhea was mostly mild except in 16 patients who had severe diarrhea of more than ten times a day. 237 of the 250 isolated V. cholerae non-O1 strains were classified into 48 serogroups. There were 2 rough strains and 11 other strains which were out of the confirmed serogroups. Positive rate of these strains to haemolysin, cholera toxin (CT) and
NAG
-ST tests were 87.2, 0.4 and 0.8% respectively.

In 1996, we examined five domestic and eight imported cases of sporadic diarrhea caused by Vibrio cholerae non-O1 in Tokyo. The domestic cases occurred during the summer, from June to September, while the imported cases were seen throughout the year. The major clinical symptoms of the patients were watery diarrhea (100%) with an average frequency of 5.5 times/day, abdominal pain (77%),
vomiting
(31%) and fever (15%). A total of 13 strains isolated from these 13 cases had the typical biochemical characteristics of Vibrio cholerae, and were classified into 11 kinds of serovars (O2, O5, O8, O9, O12, O14, O27, O51, O88, O97, and O161). All strains produced hemolysin, and two strains produced
NAG
-ST, while no strain produced cholera toxin.
