The satiety effect of slow intravenous infusions of impure cholecystokinin (CCK) was investigated in 5 rhesus monkeys during sham feeding. CCK suppressed sham feeding. The dose for 50% inhibition of sham feeding was about 10 U/kg-hr; 20 U/kg-hr abolished sham feeding. No dose produced retching,
vomiting
,
diarrhea
or other behavioral signs of toxicity. These results demonstrate the potency of CCK for inhibiting feeding in the monkey when gastric, intestinal and postabsorptive mechanisms are not activated by ingested food.

The authors report the case of a 58 year old female patient with rheumatoid arthritis. About 4 hours after each intramuscular injection of Myochrysin (Sodium-auro-thiomalate 5%) she showed undesired reactions such as sialorrhea, nausea,
vomiting
, abdominal pain,
diarrhea
, apathy, weakness, head ache, breast swelling, perspiration, feeling of incident death. The following day these symptoms declined, the joint pain, however, increased. The reaction recurred with each of the 5 Sodium-auro-thiomalate injections, but not after injections of 5% Solganal (Aurothioglucose). It is supposed that these side effects are connected with the quick absorption of the Sodium-auro-thiomalate in aqueous solution. The Aurothioglucose in oil suspension would not cause such reactions after an intramuscular injection because of its slower absorption.

Allergies may cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as
diarrhea
,
vomiting
and pain, dermatologic manifestations, asthma and rhinitis. The most common offender among the foodstuffs is milk. Elimination diets are designed not only to remove the offending food but to identify it and to prevent new sensitizations. Canker sores, foul breath and even enuresis may occasionally be related to allergies.

In August-October 1973 several NAG vibrio strains were isolated for the first time in our country from clinical cases of acute intestinal disturbances. The patients were admitted to hospital being clinically suspect of dysenteric syndrome or alimentary toxiinfection (nausea,
vomiting
, abdominal colics, tenesms, mucosanguinolent stools, aqeous stools from 4-5 up to 20 in 24 hours, with signs of dehydration). NAG vibrios were isolated from all the cultures in, practically, pure cultures. Epidemiologic survey in the village of B resulted in isolation of the same NAG vibrio strains from the samples collected from the direct contacts and drinking water sources. Therefore, NAG vibrios can unquestionably cause a diarrheic disease and it will be necessary to extend the bacteriologic diangosis also in this direction in all cases of
diarrhea
of "unknown etiology".

In a screening program in Cincinnati urine specimens from over 20,000 infants and children were tested for inherited metabolic disorders involving amino acids, carbohydrates, phenolic acids, organic acids, keto acids, mucopolysaccharides, and imidazoles. The subjects were selected on the basis of symptoms such as
vomiting
,
diarrhea
, acidosis, seizures, failure to thrive, delayed development, mental retardation, and others. The tests were based primarily on paper chromatographic techniques. Patients with 21 different metabolic disorders were found. The patterns of abnormal excretion of amino acids and other metabolites are often useful in making a diagnosis.

The effects of orally administered zinc sulfate in 52 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris were compared to those of a placebo capsule. The numbers of comedones, papules, pustules, infiltrates, and cysts were counted at each visit over a 12-week period. Forty patients completed the study. Zinc appeared to have a somewhat beneficial effect on pustules but not on comedones, papules, infiltrates, or cysts. Fourteen patients (50%) in the zinc group had side effects of nausea,
vomiting
, or
diarrhea
. Six patients (21%) in the zinc group could not tolerate the nausea and withdrew from the study.

In scleroderma, the scapular striated muscles may be affected showing rapid fatigability, and sometimes, muscle wasting with EMG changes. The smooth muscle changes, well known in the esophagus, where they lead to loss of peristalsis, may also be marked in other parts of the digestive tract. They lead to various symptoms, such as cramps,
vomiting
and
diarrhea
.

Eight sailors on board the Asiafreighter were exposed to arsine that had escaped from a cylinder in the cargo hold. Four suffered severe toxicity and within a few hours had developed fever, weakness, nausea,
vomiting
,
diarrhoea
, abdominal pain, and haemoglobinuria. These patients had pronounced intravascular haemolysis, which in one patient was complete. This patient was also stuporose and anoxic, a condition attributed to failure of oxygen transport and sludging of red cell debris in the cerebral and pulmonary circulations, but he regained a normal level of consciousness after exchange transfusion. Evidence of marrow depression was present: the reticulocyte response to the haemolysis was poor and there was a thrombocytopenia. All four patients developed renal failure, one being totally anuric for five weeks. Two patients developed peripheral neuropathy, and one was still severely disabled six months after the incident. The other four patients had a similar, though less severe, illness.

The symptoms of 100 hospitalised cases of rotavirus infantile gastroenteritis are described. Most patients presented with high fever between the 2nd and 5th day, having started with
diarrhoea
or
vomiting
or both. 42% of the infants had upper respiratory tract symptoms. Severe electrolyte disturbance did not occur, although there was a suggestion of a correlation between the higher blood ureas and the number of rotavirus particles in the stools. The mean duration of illness of uncomplicated cases was 13.4 days. Infants were more severely affected when enteropathic coliforms were also present, the total duration of illness being extended to 23 days. It is suggested that rotavirus or similar virus infection may be an essential precursor in the majority of coliform gastroenteritis.

Conventional virologic investigations generally failed to implicate viruses as a cause of acute gastroenteritis in young children. When negative-contrast stain electron microscopy was used for the examination of stool samples from affected patients, several candidate etiologic agents were discovered. Rotavirus (otherwise known as orbivirus, reo-like agent, and infantile gastroenteritis virus) emerged as an important causative agent. In a considerable number of patients, however, no causative agent was identified. Several other candidate etiologic viruses now "stand in the wings" awaiting additional evidence as to their role in the pathogenesis of acute gastroenteritis. In a study period of 12 months, 669 patients were found to be shedding virus in association with symptoms of
diarrhea
,
vomiting
, and temperature elevation. Approximately one third of these patients acquired their infection in hospital.
