81 women were tested in early pregnancy with a personality questionnaire (FPI), a bodily symptoms checklist and a structured questionnaire with respect to various psychosocial events. Women with and without Emesis in early pregnancy differ significantly according to the following characteristics: Quality and quantity of past and present bodily symptoms, psychosomatic affect-resonance, calmness, occupational attitudes, description of family-relationship and expectancy to vomit. Results are interpreted that vomiting in early pregnancy seems to be a psychosomatic reaction, based on a extenuated perception of reality, in combination with difficulties "leaving home" as well an expectancy to vomit in pregnancy.
