Ten clinically intact weaned piglets were experimentally intoxicated by intravenous injection of lipoproteide-free lipopolysaccharide endotoxin according to Westphal of E. coli O 127:B8. Severe endotoxin shock with all clinical manifestations of experimental coli-enterotoxaemia was induced in all animals and included circulatory disorder with tachycardia, intermittent pallor and/or cyanosis, symptoms of severe systemic intoxication, neurological symptoms, such as lack of coordination, hindleg staggering, spasm, paresis, paralysis, changes in respiration, such as rise in respiratory frequency and deepened breathing premortal deceleration of respiration and gasping for breath, temperature, variation, including hyperthermia and aggravating hypothermia, gastro-intestinal symptoms, such as temporary
vomiting
and persistent diarrhoea, leucopenia,
eosinopenia
, variation of haematocrit, edematisation, increased transudation, congestion, and gastro-intestinal shock lesions. Eight animals died. These experiments quite obviously have confirmed that endotoxin shock is the common pathogenetic principle behind all forms of coli-entertoxaemia (i.e, the forms of edematisation, cardiovascular failure, and gastro-intestinal processes.) Lipopolysaccharide endotoxin alone may be responsible for the development of both edemas and neurotoxic symptoms (edema disease) and diarrhoea (gastro-intestinal form of coli-enterotoxaemia). The pathogenetic relevance of additional toxins (neurotoxin and enterotoxin) is discussed under this aspect.

Lymphocytic-plasmacytic enteritis (LPE) was diagnosed by intestinal biopsy in 24 dogs with chronic small intestinal diarrhea.
Vomiting
, weight loss, and reduced appetite were frequent. Breed predispositions were not documented, although four patients were German Shepherd dogs. Hypoproteinemia, hypoalbuminemia, and hypoglobulinemia were common and most likely a result of protein-losing enteropathy. Other biochemical abnormalities were uncommon. Intestinal malabsorption was common. Neutrophilia (sometimes with increased band neutrophils), monocytosis, lymphopenia, and
eosinopenia
were the most consistent hematologic abnormalities. The severity of the lymphocytic-plasmacytic infiltration was not significantly different (P greater than 0.05) between regions of small intestine. However, the severity of cellular infiltration often varied among different regions of small intestine in the same dog. Changes in villous architecture and lacteal dilation were common. Intestinal nematode infestation was diagnosed in five dogs, and pancreatic exocrine insufficiency was diagnosed in one dog. In the remaining 18 dogs, besides LPE, no other associated or concurrent intestinal disease was diagnosed.

During a seven year period (1981-87), 53 cases of typhoid fever in children below five years were seen. This accounted for 13.5% of all typhoid admission in pediatrics during the above period. Predominant symptoms were fever (100%),
vomiting
(52.8%), diarrhea (30.2%) and anorexia (24.5%). Chills and rigor associated with fever was noticed in 38% of the children. Salmonella typhi was isolated from blood in 22 of 53 (41.7%) cases. A significant finding on peripheral smear was
eosinopenia
(86.8%). Complications like endotoxic shock, enteric encephalopathy and gastrointestinal hemorrhage were noticed in only few cases (7.6%). There were no deaths.

Cecal perforation was diagnosed in a dog with a history of acute
vomiting
. The dog also had an adrenocortical adenoma. Intestinal perforation can be a serious complication of cortico-steroid treatment in the dog, but has not been attributable to hyperadrenocorticism. Fever and an inflammatory CBC were not observed, which could have been secondary to adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism. The acute abdominal crisis associated with peritonitis required quick resolution in an attempt to save the dog, but also precluded any further diagnostic procedures for possible hyperadrenocorticism. The signs that suggested hyper-adrenocorticism in this dog included alopecia, lymphopenia,
eosinopenia
, high liver enzyme activities, hypercholesterolemia, and one large and one small adrenal gland. This latter finding presumably indicated negative feedback suppression and atrophy attributable to a functional adrenocortical adenoma.

Medical records of 3 dogs from North Carolina and 3 dogs from Virginia with ehrlichial morulae in circulating neutrophils were studied retrospectively. Two clinically distinct disease syndromes, including chronic, moderate to severe anemia (n = 3) and polyarthritis (n = 2) were associated with canine granulocytic ehrlichiosis (CGE) in these dogs. One dog was clinically healthy, and abnormalities were not detected during physical examination. Clinical signs were nonspecific and included fever, lethargy, anorexia,

Considerable variability was found in the serologic responses to Ehrlichia equi, Ehrlichia canis, and Ehrlichia chaffeensis antigens among the 5 dogs for which stored sera were available for indirect fluorescent antibody testing. Polymerase chain reaction amplification and sequencing of portions of the 16S rRNA gene from blood (collected in ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) of 1 severely anemic dog (dog 3) and 1 polyarthritic dog (dog 4) resulted in DNA sequences nearly identical to the GenBank accessions for Ehrlichia ewingii. The DNA sequence from a 3rd dog (dog 5) was most similar to that of E. canis. Serologic or molecular results support the possibility of E. ewingii, E. equi, and E. canis coinfection or serologic cross-reactivity among canine granulocytic and monocytic Ehrlichia species in dogs from North Carolina and Virginia. Variability in response to tetracycline or doxycycline treatment was noted in these dogs, with more rapid resolution of signs in dogs with polyarthritis. We report the 1st cases of CGE in dogs from North Carolina and Virginia, including recognition of CGE in a healthy dog.
