Lymphosarcoma, a common canine hematopoietic neoplasm, occurs in multicentric, alimentary, mediastinal, and extranodal forms. Alimentary lymphoma accounts for approximately 5% of cases and is less easily diagnosed than the more common multicentric form. Chemotherapy is often effective, but recent therapeutic advances hold great promise for success in treating canine lymphoma. A 4-year-old, black Labrador retriever was presented (day 1) with a 2-day history of vomiting, polyuria/polydipsia, lethargy, and anorexia. The heart and respiratory rates were within normal limits, and the rectal temperature was 38.9 degrees C. Abdominal splinting was noted on palpation, which elicited urination. No obvious additional abnormalities were detected.

Hepatic T-cell lymphosarcoma with involvement of regional lymph nodes and concurrent schistosomiasis were diagnosed in an 11-year-old male neutered mixed-breed dog with a history of chronic weight loss, inappetence, vomiting, and diarrhea. Trematode ova present in the hepatic parenchyma and mesenteric node were surrounded by sheets of neoplastic lymphocytes while those in the intestinal wall were surrounded by large numbers of non-neoplastic lymphocytes. Immunohistochemistry revealed that both the neoplastic and hyperplastic populations were T lymphocytes. The ova were identified by fecal saline sedimentation as Heterobilharzia spp., and fecal ova shedding resolved after praziquantel anthelmintic treatment. The lymphoma progressed despite chemotherapy, and the dog was euthanized after developing neurologic signs and a necropsy was performed. A monomorphic population of neoplastic T cells expanded and replaced normal architecture in the liver and spleen, surrounded nerve roots within the cauda equina, and infiltrated the meninges of the brain. The presence of schistosome ova embedded within neoplastic T-cell infiltrates suggests that, as previously reported in human schistosomiasis, heterobilharziasis may be associated with neoplasia.

A dog with lymphosarcoma was evaluated for vomiting, lethargy, and abdominal pain 48 h after treatment with L-asparaginase. Based on drug administration, clinical signs, bloodwork, and elevated canine pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity, L-asparaginase-associated pancreatitis was diagnosed. This is an acknowledged toxicity; however, its pathophysiology and incidence rate in veterinary patients are unknown and sparsely documented.

Feline inflammatory bowel disease is a diagnosis of exclusion and a common cause of chronic gastrointestinal signs suhc as weight loss, variation in appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy. Patients with intestinal small cell lymphosarcoma can present identical clinical signs, and differentiating between these two conditions can be a challenge. A companion article discusses the value of performing immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction testing on intestinal biopsy samples for this purpose.
