During 15 years (from 1959 to 1973) the author observed 753 patients operated upon for acute intestinal ileus; 161 of them aged above 60. An early diagnosis of the condition is difficult due to blurred main symptoms against the background of pronounced age changes and concomitant diseases. The most common non-blastomatous forms are the following: adhesive intestinal ileus (16.8%) and sigmoid volvulus (14.3%). Cancer of the colon with acute symptoms of intestinal ileus was noted in 23.6%. Stomach resection was carried out upon 37.9% of cases. Postoperative complications constituted 34.1% and lethality--30.4%. Elderly and senile patients usually appeal for medical aid rather late, which together with severe concomitant diseases, late surgical intervention, diagnostic and tactical errors admitted in the treatment result in a high postoperative lethality.

The physiology of the normal gastric defence mechanisms in the dog and cat is reviewed to emphasize the routes by which drugs can be used to protect the gastric mucosa. The action of the main anti-ulcer and pro-kinetic drugs are discussed in relation to the diseases that they may be used to treat. Gastric disease in the form of gastric dilatation/volvulus, chronic vomiting without obstruction and gastric outflow disease are described from the point of view of diagnosis and treatment.

Stomach volvulus in its acute form is a serious sudden disorder in the abdominal cavity. The case of stomach volvulus, that had been successfully surgically solved, is described in the presented paper. Even though the volvulus was not caused by the hiatus hernia, the antireflux fundoplication according to Nissen-Rossetti was performed besides the frontal gastropexy.

Bochdalek hernias in adulthood are rare. Symptomatic Bochdalek hernias in adults are rarer, but may lead to fatal complications. Patients with acute gastric volvulus on diaphragmatic hernia are a diagnostic and therapeutic emergency.Here, we report a case of a 56-year-old woman diagnosed with epigastric pain, cough, vomiting since 2 weeks and shortness of breath. Complicated Bochdalek hernia was an incidental finding, diagnosed by chest radiograph, computed tomography (CT), and barium swallow study. Stomach was within the thorax in the left side due to left diaphragmatic hernia of a nontraumatic cause.The patient was prepared for the laparoscopic surgical repair, to close the defect. The patient recovered with accepted general condition and was discharged 9 days later.Diagnoses of Bochdalek hernias in adulthood are challenging. However, although rare, this possibility should be kept in mind to avoid fatal complications.
