A 21-year-old man experienced persistent swelling of his lips and generalized pruritus without hives associated with swimming. Provocative testing with tap water produced transient edema and pruritus. Sweating and methacholine testing did not produce cholinergic urticaria. After several weeks, the angioedema gradually subsided, the reaction to tap water became negative, and the patient was able to swim again without reactions. Water should be added to the list of physical agents that cause angioedema as well as urticaria.

A 30-year-old woman with aquagenic urticaria developed hives every time she came in contact with a water source such as tap water, snow or sweat. The patient's condition was satisfactorily controlled with cyproheptadine hydrochloride. I believe the triggering event in these attacks may have been an osmotic stimulus.

An 11-yr-old girl presented with a history of urticaria induced by warm or cool showers, exercise, and emotional stimuli. During evaluation she repeatedly developed generalized punctate urticaria, pruritus, palpitations, and headaches after warm baths or exercise, and she had a positive methacholine skin test. She developed similar lesions and pruritus after local application of sterile water, tap water, ethanol, normal saline, or 3% saline. The diagnosis of combined aquagenic and cholinergic urticaria was made and presented a unique opportunity to study and compare mediator release and clinical symptoms in both conditions. The patient was submerged in bath water at either 37 degree or 41 degree C to induce either aquagenic or cholinergic urticaria, respectively. Histamine was released into the systemic circulation in both conditions in a similar time course; however, systemic symptoms occurred only after the 41 degree C bath. After failure to induce tolerance to the 41 degree C bath water, hydroxyzine therapy was instituted. One week later she was rechallenged; few symptoms appeared, and a rise in serum histamine was not detected as had been shown in previous challenges. The data suggest that in our patient, hydroxyzine may have contributed to the inhibition of both histamine release and the appearance of symptoms during hot bath challenging.

A healthy 3-year-old boy developed acute urticaria five minutes after exposure to tap water in different areas of Jerusalem. Physical examination and baseline laboratory evaluation were within normal limits. The clinical picture and possible mechanisms of aquagenic urticaria are reviewed. This is the youngest patient to be reported.

Propolis is a multifunctional material used by bees in the construction and maintenance of their hives. Propolis possesses several biologic activities such as anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, antifungal, antiviral, and tissue regenerative, among others. The purpose of this study was to determine the ability of propolis to serve as a temporary storage medium for the maintenance of periodontal ligament (PDL) cell viability of avulsed teeth. PDL cells were obtained from healthy third molars and cultured in Dulbecco's Modified Eagles Medium (DMEM). Cultures were subjected to 10% propolis solution, 20% propolis solution, long-shelf life light milk with lower fat content (milk), Hank's Balanced Salt Solution, tap water as the negative control, and DMEM as the positive control. Tissue culture plates were incubated with experimental media at 37 degrees C for 1, 3, 6, 12, or 24 hours. PDL cell viability was assessed by trypan blue exclusion. Statistical analysis of the data was accomplished by using one-way analysis of variance complemented by the Tukey test. The level of significance was 5% (p<0.05). The results showed that 10% propolis was a more effective storage medium than other groups. In conclusion, propolis can be recommended as a suitable transport medium for avulsed teeth.

Aquagenic urticaria is a rare form of inducible urticaria characterized by wealing at the site of contact of the skin with water, regardless of its temperature, within minutes of exposure. We describe six young women who reported urticarial rashes, triggered mostly by sea bathing, characteristically localized on the inferior facial contours and neck. In four of the six patients, this was the only localization. All six reacted with erythema and wealing to challenge tests with hypertonic saline (3.5% NaCl) applied to the submandibular area and/or neck. Two patients reacted also to tap water or to normal saline, but less intensely. Challenge tests with different hypertonic water solutions, performed in one patient, showed that both salinity and hypertonicity may be pathogenically relevant. Response to antihistamines was poor in three patients. Our experience suggests the existence of a distinct salt-dependent subtype of aquagenic urticaria (SDAU) that affects young women, with a characteristic localization on the inferior facial contours and neck. SDAU is possibly under-recognized and under-reported.

An instrument named Dermographism-Testing-and-Grading device was used for grading the response of patients having demographic urticaria, in comparison with controls. This device is capable of stroking the skin with, four different grades of pressure. The pressures used were such that none of the 250 controls (including.50 normal suliects, 100 patients having non-allergic skin diseases, 50 patients having non-urticarial allergic diseases and 50 patients having non-demographic urticaria), showed demographist with even the maximum pressure employed, while all the 25 patient, having demographic urticaria developed dermographism. Depending upon the minimum pressure re4uired, to elicit dermographism in these patients the severity of dermoloaphism could be graded as grade I in 8 patients, grade.11 in 6 and grade IV in 11 patients. None of the patients in " group showed grade III dermograph.ism. The dermographic grade varied at different body sites and local applications of oil, talcum powder and even tap water lowered the dermographic grade.

Here, we present the results of a 2-year field trial aimed at testing the effect of overwintering on different feeds on the course of Nosema ceranae infection. In August 2015, four experimental bee colony groups were established. After the last honey harvest, each colony was provided with 20 kg of feed, either honey, sugar (3:2 solution in tap water), inverted syrup made of sucrose, or wheat starch syrup. Samples of live bees were collected from each beehive in August (before feeding), November, and May. The following year, feeding and sampling were performed in the same way. Bees were examined microscopically to estimate the percentage of Nosema-infected individuals in the sample and the spore number per bee. Fitness parameters were also measured in all colonies. In all hives, presence of N. ceranae was confirmed through polymerase chain reaction. Nosema apis was not detected in the apiary. Significant differences in nosematosis prevalence and/or intensity were observed between the experimental groups. For most parameters, best results were recorded in the group fed with honey. Worst fitness and highest nosematosis prevalence and intensity were found in colonies fed with wheat starch syrup.
