Studies on efficacy and safety of aspoxicillin (ASPC) were carried out to 14 cases of pediatric infections, and the following results were obtained. Clinical efficacy of ASPC to 10 respiratory infections, 1 urinary tract infection and 1 otitis media was excellent in 6 cases (50%) and good in 6 cases (50%). The efficacy rate was 100%. Bacteriological effect of ASPC to 6 cases which detected the causative organisms (S. aureus, E. faecalis,
H. influenzae
and P. mirabilis) was eliminate in 3 cases (50%) and replace in 3 cases (50%). The bacterial eliminated rate was 100%. Side effects of ASPC to 14 administered cases were observed in 2 cases, that were
urticaria
in 1 case and elevation of GOT in 1 case. From the above results, it was concluded that ASPC was the useful and secure antibiotic drug for treatment of infections in pediatric field.

Cephalexin, a semisynthetic cephalosporin antibiotic, has wide clinical application in respiratory infections of children and adults. In pharyngitis and tonsillitis due to beta-haemolytic streptococci, it is comparable to penicillin, cyclocillin, and cephaloglycin, as measured by clinical response, bacteriological cure rate, and incidence of relapse and reinfection. In otitis media, it is effective at dosages of 50-100 mg/kg/day except in those infections caused by Haemophilus influenzae, in which there is failure in 50% of the cases. In other infections of the upper respiratory tract, it appears to be effective except, again, in those caused by
H. influenzae
. Dosages of 1-2 g/day have been used in adults and 20-100 mg/kg/day in children. Adverse effects, mostly gastrointestinal upsets, rash, and
urticaria
, have been relatively infrequent and have not required discontinuance of the drug.

A radio-allergosorbent test (RAST) to measure specific IgE antibodies in man to whole bacterial cells of Streptococcus pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Haemophilus influenzae was developed to investigate different well-defined lung diseases (chronic bronchitis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA), bronchial asthma allergic rhinitis, cystic fibrosis) and also in
urticaria
as compared with non-atopic blood donors. In addition, total IgE values and skin prick tests were assessed in these patients. The ABPA group gave the highest specific IgE RAST scores to all three bacteria, whilst the chronic bronchitis and cystic fibrosis groups also gave raised RAST scores with
H. influenzae
. There was a positive correlation between the patients' Sta. aureus and Str. pneumoniae immediate-type skin reactions and their RAST scores and total serum IgE concentrations, but there was only a low incidence of immediate-type skin test positivity to
H. influenzae
.
