Roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) is one of the most common game mammals in Europe, where hundreds of thousands people are exposed to this animal. Despite this fact, we are aware of only two cases of allergy to roe deer published until recently, one case of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and asthma and the second of contact
urticaria
. We describe another case with co-existing allergic contact
urticaria
and rhinitis in a 55-year old male professional hunter. The symptoms were provoked only by exposure to roe deer, and there were no other past or present allergic diseases. Specific IgE was found to following animal allergens: cow dander (CAP class 5), goat epithelium and horse dander (each CAP class 4), dog epithelium, dog dander and swine epithelium (each CAP class 2). Skin prick tests have shown positive reaction only to cow epithelium (+). Because of lack of deer dander allergen for specific IgE and skin tests, we have confirmed the causal relationship between exposure to roe deer and allergy using the rub test with roe deer's fur. There was a clearly positive urticarial reaction on the patient's skin accompanied by nasal itch,
sneezing
and rhinorrhea. No reaction was seen in a control person. We surmise that the positive tests with cow epithelium seen in this patient may result from a cross-reactivity to deer allergens. We conclude that although occupational allergies to roe deer seem to be rare, such possibility should be always considered among people having contact with these animals.

A 22-year-old boy having two attacks of
urticaria
per day for the last 5 years and intermittent attacks of
sneezing
and rhinorrhoea, and without any clues to the causative agent in spite of a detailed history and follow up, showed almost complete relief on wearing an ordinary cloth mask for 3 days. He was subsequently trained to use the soft nasal filters and obtained almost 80% relief in
urticaria
and complete relief in rhinitis during the next 1 year. Wearing the mask for 2 days again led to complete relief and further training in the proper use of the filters was helpful.

Allergic immediate-type reactions by halogenated compounds of platinum (Pt) (platinum salts) have been described in workers in precious metal refineries and catalyst productions. In both industries there are exposures to many different Pt compounds. It is believed that the most important allergens are those compounds with the highest number of halide ligands. It is unknown whether sensitizations to compounds with a lower number of halide ligands represent co-sensitizations or are due to cross-reactivity. We report a worker engaged in the production of cytotoxic drugs with occupational asthma and exposure to only one Pt salt with four halide ligands. The 22-year-old worker developed work-related

, runny nose, and variable dyspnea about a year after he had started to work in the cytotoxic drugs production with exposure to potassium tetrachloroplatinate(II) (K(2)PtCl(4)). He was immediately removed from his workplace and admitted for a medical opinion about 6 months afterwards. Spirometry was normal, but asthma was corroborated by a positive response to methacholine. The results of skin prick testing could not be interpreted due to
urticaria
factitia. Challenge with K(2)PtCl(4) by a dosimeter method yielded a clear immediate-type reaction with an increase of exhaled nitric oxide from 32 to 156 ppb after 24 h indicating an increased airway inflammation. Pt salts with four halide ligands like K(2)PtCl(4) may cause an allergic immediate-type reaction and occupational asthma. Workers in the production of Pt-containing cytotoxic drugs with exposure to these substances should be included in medical surveillance programs for the prevention of occupational asthma caused by Pt salts.

and rhinorrhea of allergic responses. Mast cell activities are diverse and include painful inflammatory reactions in autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis. In the gastrointestinal system, mast cells are implicated in diverse actions such as increased gastric acid secretion, polyp formation and uncomfortable conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The role of immunology and mast cells in these areas is intriguing but less well understood than their role in allergic responses. Because mast cells have been implicated in both physiologic as well as pathogenic processes, they have been the subjects of avid study. Review of the current literature on mast cell biology reveals that there are many studies of their presence within the tumor microenvironment and evidence, which supports mast cell influence on tumor angiogenesis, tumor invasion, and immune suppression. The studies reviewed in this article concentrate largely on mast cells in human GI malignancies. This review also provides background information regarding mast cells, such as their origination, their location within the body, how they are activated and how they function as mediators.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is an allergen-induced inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Several studies have shown a link not only between AR and asthma but also with other co-morbid conditions. It is important to recognize the onset and existence of these co-morbid conditions, for adequate treatment, prevention of the development of new allergen sensitizations and air-way hypersensitivities. This is a prospective study of co-morbid conditions in adults with AR, from Mumbai, Maharashtra, India and compares them with those in children 23 consecutive children below 6 years (Group 1), 42 children between age of 6 years and 14 years in Group 2 and 57 adults in Group 3 were selected for the symptoms of AR (
sneezing
, watering and blocked nose), which were currently sufficiently troublesome to require medication. A high association of co-morbid conditions with AR was found. More than 80% suffered from one to three co-morbid conditions each. The most common co-morbid condition was asthma in all the groups. Often asthma and sinusitis was asymptomatic and a high degree of suspicion was needed for diagnosis. Adults had the highest prevalence of sinusitis and allergic conjunctivitis. Prevalence of
urticaria
was similar in children as well as adults. Studies with larger data samples are needed to confirm these associations.

The fruits of Xanthium strumarium L. (Asteraceae) have been used extensively in China for treatment of various diseases such as allergic rhinitis (AR), tympanitis,
urticaria
and arthritis or ozena. This study was designed to systemically investigate the effects of the caffeoylxanthiazonoside (CXT) isolated from fruits of X. strumarium on AR in rodent animals. Animals were orally administered with CXT. Anti-allergic activity of CXT was evaluated by passive cutaneous anaphylaxis test (PCA); acetic acid-induced writhing tests were used to evaluate the analgesic effects of CXT; acetic acid-induced vascular permeability tests were performed to evaluate anti-inflammatory effect of CXT. Then, the model AR in rats was established to evaluate the effects of CXT on AR with the following tests: the
sneezing
and nasal scratching frequencies, IgE level in serum, and histopathological examinations. Our results demonstrated that CXT had favorable anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. Additionally, we found that CXT was helpful to ameliorate the nasal symptoms and to down-regulate IgE levels in AR rats. Thus, we suggested that CXT can be treated as a candidate for treating AR.
