Seven patients who received a lysozyme, nystatin, and tetracycline containing vaginal suppository because of suspected vaginal infection, developed local or systemic allergic reactions. The coincidence of the symptoms with the repeated use of the suppository as well as skin and lymphocyte transformation tests indicated that the lysozyme in the suppository was responsible for the allergic reactions. This lysozyme preparation contained additional egg proteins, which contributed to the allergic reaction in certain patients: three patients with a previous history of egg allergy and serologic and/or skin test evidence for egg-white sensitization developed the allergic reaction after the first suppository. Four patients had urticaria or anaphylaxis after treatment for at least three days; none of these four patients developed egg allergy. Five of seven individuals had positive skin tests (prick or scratch) to ovomucoid and lysozyme, but none of the patients had lysozyme-specific IgE in the circulation. All seven patients, with or without egg allergy, showed vigorous T cell responses to purified lysozyme and partly to other egg-white proteins in the lymphocyte transformation test, which was absent in controls. Vaginal suppositories that contain lysozyme and other contaminating egg white proteins can either elicit allergic reactions in patients with a preexisting egg white allergy or induce sensitization to lysozyme and other egg white components.

A girl, 5.7 years old, gained tolerance to egg white ingestion in spite of high immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody titers to egg white but retained contact urticaria against egg white. She developed atopic dermatitis on her face at 2 months of age and showed high IgE antibody titers to egg white and cow's milk. Accidental ingestion of egg products initiated immediate symptoms such as wheezing, urticaria, erythema and edema of the eyelids and conjunctiva three times. These symptoms were confirmed by challenge tests using boiled egg white at 3.9 years of age. She also reacted positively to a 20 min patch test on her volar arm with raw egg white. However, there were no reactions to the oral challenge test by boiled egg and freeze-dried egg white at 5.1 and 5.7 years of age, respectively. This non-responsiveness was confirmed by a double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge using freeze-dried egg white. Nevertheless, she showed positive reactions to a 20 min patch test with freeze-dried egg white. Her IgE antibody titers to the egg white components including ovomucoid, ovalbumin, ovotransferrin and lysozyme as well as egg white were high from 2.9 to 5.7 years old. Her IgE antibody titers for the ovomucoid fragments digested by pepsin, chymotrypsin and trypsin were not lower than those of positive control subjects. The binding activity of IgE antibody to ovomucoid, however, decreased from 2.9 to 5.6 years as shown by radioallergosorbent test (RAST) inhibition assays. The IgE antibody showed weaker binding activity to pepsin- and chymotrypsin-digested ovomucoid that were filtered through cut-off 10,000 filter at the age of 2.1 and 5.7 years. We speculated that the maturation of secretion of digestive enzymes was involved in the mechanisms of the acquisition of tolerance to egg white ingestion in spite of the persistence of contact urticaria.

There are over 200 food additives that have been approved in Finland. They are being used in order to improve preservability, flavor, appearance and texture. Some of them may cause hypersensitivity reactions, the most common being anaphylactic reactions, urticaria and exacerbation of asthma. Such reactions are, however, very rare. Anaphylactic reactions and other symptoms have resulted from carmine, lysozyme, acetic acid and acetates, gums of plant origin, sulfites and tartrazine.

Propolis, a resinous substance collected by Apis mellifera bees from various plant sources and mixed with secreted beeswax, is a multifunctional material used by bees in the construction, maintenance, and protection of their hives. The collected propolis sample, from High Egypt, was dark-green with olive-odor. The minimal inhibition concentration (MIC) of propolis-ethanolic-extract, against Aeromonas hydrophila, was 80 microg Propolis-ethanolic-extract and crude propolis (1%) were added to artificial basal diet with (30% crude protein) to evaluate their efficacy on the fish growth-performance, immunostimulation and resistance to A. hydrophila. Two hundred and twenty-five Oreochromis niloticus (8 +/- 0.45 g/fish) were divided into three equal treatments (T) of triplet replicates. The fish of T(1) were fed on basal diet (control). The fish of T(2) were given the basal diet, containing propolis-ethanolic-extract. The fish of T(3) were given the basal diet containing crude propolis for 28 day. The fish were intraperitoneally challenged by A. hydrophila (0.2 x 10(7) cells ml(-1)) at the end of the feeding period and kept for 15 more days. The best growth rate and feed conversion ratio were obtained with T(2.) The increase in the average daily gain, specific growth rate and feed efficiency ratio were highly significances in T(2) followed by T(3) when compared with the control group. The HCT-level and monocyte-counts were increased (T(2)). No significant change, in the large lymphocytic-count was found among the three treatments (28-27-28%), while the neutrophil-count was significantly decreased (7%) with T(2) and increased (13.11%) with the control. A significant increase in serum lysozyme and serum bactericidal activities was found with T(2). The RLP against A. hydrophila was high with T(2) and T(3). The propolis-ethanolic-extract enhanced the growth, immunity and resistance of O. niloticus against A. hydrophila more than the crude propolis.

Nosema ceranae is an obligate intracellular parasite and the etiologic agent of Nosemosis that affects honeybees. Beside the stress caused by this pathogen, honeybee colonies are exposed to pesticides under beekeeper intervention, such as acaricides to control Varroa mites. These compounds can accumulate at high concentrations in apicultural matrices. In this work, the effects of parasitosis/acaricide on genes involved in honeybee immunity and survival were evaluated. Nurse bees were infected with N. ceranae and/or were chronically treated with sublethal doses of coumaphos or tau-fluvalinate, the two most abundant pesticides recorded in productive hives. Our results demonstrate the following: (1) honeybee survival was not affected by any of the treatments; (2) parasite development was not altered by acaricide treatments; (3) coumaphos exposure decreased lysozyme expression; (4) N. ceranae reduced levels of vitellogenin transcripts independently of the presence of acaricides. However, combined effects among stressors on imagoes were not recorded. Sublethal doses of acaricides and their interaction with other ubiquitous parasites in colonies, extending the experimental time, are of particular interest in further research work.
