The rapid proliferation of complex plastic polymers and resins has led to a marked increase of work-induced asthma due to low molecular weight agents. Phthalates are frequently used in the manufacture of epoxy resins, plasticizers, adhesives and a wide variety of other materials. They have recently been identified as an important irritant and immunogen of at least four occupational respiratory syndromes, i.e., asthma/rhinitis, late respiratory systemic syndrome, pulmonary disease-anemia syndrome, and an irritant reaction. Isocyanates are extensively employed in the production of polyurethane foams, adhesives, paints and other plastic products. They have been incriminated in the causation of occupational lung disease since 1951. It appears that both specific IgE-mediated and non-specific irritant mechanisms are operative in isocyanate-induced asthma. Formaldehyde is a widely used irritating chemical, mainly employed as disinfectant or in the production of multiple resin products employed in the wood, shoe, and clothing industries. Several of these resin products can give off formaldehyde fumes causing occupational and non-occupational dermatitis,

, bronchitis and
reactive airway disease
. Colophony pine resin used in virtually all soft soldering fluxes, and paraphenylene diamine used in the fur, paint and rubber industries have also been implicated in the generation of industrial asthma. Awareness of where such agents are likely to be encountered, together with patterns of respiratory disease induced, should facilitate earlier diagnosis.

Previous observations have shown that the syndrome of thyroid autoimmunity and idiopathic
urticaria
and angioedema (ICUA) can be associated with a marked worsening of
reactive airway disease
. Possibly, mediators released in this syndrome may contribute to acute bronchospasm and associated respiratory symptoms in some patients. In this study, two patients presenting with overlapping clinical presentations of the syndrome of thyroid immunity and ICUA are described in whom a diagnosis of anaphylaxis to food and antibiotics, respectively, was initially suspected but ruled out by testing and challenges. These cases illustrate clinical overlap between presentations of ICUA and anaphylaxis. We suggest that patients with idiopathic anaphylaxis be evaluated for the presence of antithyroid microsomal (peroxidase) antibodies or antithyroglobulin antibodies, particularly because the diagnosis of thyroid antibody-positive ICUA may suggest additional therapeutic options.

Horses develop many skin and respiratory disorders that have been attributed to allergy. These disorders include pruritic skin diseases, recurrent

, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, and
reactive airway disease
. Allergen-specific IgE has been detected in these horses, and allergen-specific immunotherapy is used to ameliorate clinical signs. The best understood atopic disease in horses is insect hypersensitivity, but the goal of effective treatment with allergen-specific immunotherapy remains elusive. In this review, updates in pathogenesis of allergic states and a brief mention of the new data on what is known in humans and dogs and how that relates to equine allergic disorders are discussed.
