During metabolism studies of radiolabeled proteins in 126 participants four patients were suspected of being sensitive to potassium iodide (Kl) because they repeatedly developed
urticaria
and other symptoms after Kl administration. Two of the four patients suspected of Kl sensitivity and 10 control patients were orally challenged with Kl to document and characterize Kl sensitivity and to evaluate the possible association(s) of Kl sensitivity with
urticaria
, hypocomplementemia, and vasculitis. The Kl challenges in the two sensitive patients precipitated
urticaria
, angioedema, polymyalgias, conjunctivitis, and coryza. One of these two patients also developed a severe systemic illness characterized by fever, headache, peritonitis, episcleritis, and
pneumonitis
. The four sensitive patients were strikingly similar in that they exhibited hypocomplementemia and dermal vasculitis associated with chronic urticaria or systemic lupus erythematosus, suggesting that other patients with similar clinical features may be sensitive to Kl and that Kl may precipitate severe systemic illness in them.

Twenty-seven patients with serious gram-negative infections were treated with ticarcillin in an average daily dosage of 237 mg/kg (range, 174 to 307 mg/kg). Ticarcillin was bactericidal for all infecting organisms in concentrations ranging from 31.2 to 125 mug/ml. Five of 8 patients (62%) with overwhelming Pseudomonas
pneumonia
were cured or improved, and 9 of 12 (75%) were cured of
pneumonia
caused by other gram-negative organisms. Of six extrapulmonary infections caused by Pseudomonas, five (83%) were cured or improved. In seven cases, the infecting organism reisolated during therapy was more resistant to ticarcillin than the primary isolate. The serum half-life of ticarcillin in three patients with renal failure was 11.2 +/- 1.0 h, and during hemodialysis it decreased to 6.3 +/- 1.8 h. There were two episodes of superinfection with resistant organisms. Thirteen patients (48%) manifested eosinophilia, one of whom had severe
urticaria
. Prolongation of bleeding time was attributable to ticarcillin in two patients. Ticarcillin appears to be effective for therapy of serious gram-negative infections in dosages 30 to 50% less than those recommended for carbenicillin.

Neutrophil granulocyte function was determined in three patients with systemic staphylococcal infection, clinical manifestations of generalized allergic disease, and hyperimmunoglobulinemia E. Each of the patients had urticarial skin rashes before or at the time of development of staphylococcal suppurative lymphadenitis,
pneumonia
, or sepsis. Neutrophil chemotaxis, random migration, phagocytosis, and bactericidal capacity were assessed to determine if an abnormality in these functions might have contributed to the development of severe staphylococcal infections. Each of the three patients with generalized
urticaria
was found to have a marked defect in neutrophil chemotaxis. The mean chemotactic index of the patients was 12 +/- 4, whereas that of 20 controls was 72 +/- 11. Neutrophil random migration, phagocytosis, and bactericidal capacity were normal in each patient. The serum or plasma of the patients did not inhibit chemotaxis of control neutrophils and did not contain an increased concentration of the chemotactic-factor inactivator found in normal serum. Treatment of the neutrophils of these three patients with the competitive histamine H2 receptor blocking agent, burimamide, produced a significant increase in chemotactic responsiveness. These studies suggest the possibility of pharmacologic modification of neutrophil granulocyte function.

In the Tri-State Leukemia Survey, the history of diseases in 605 adult male leukemia cases 15 years and older and in 668 adult male population controls was examined. These diseases occurred at least 1 year before leukemia was diagnosed. The data were based on respondents' answers that the disease was diagnosed by a physician; the respondent was either the subject or his spouse. Of 30 diseases studied, 7 showed an excess among the patients with leukemia: infectious hepatitis, eczema, psoriasis, diabetes, arthritis and rheumatism, heart disease, and ankylosing spondylitis. Mumps had a lower reported occurrence among the cases, whereas
pneumonia
was less frequent in acute lymphatic cases than in population controls. Three diseases occurred significantly less in controls than in persons with specific histologic types of leukemia. Our data revealed a more frequent history of herpes zoster (shingles) in chronic lymphatic leukemia, more
hives
in acute chronic myeloid cases, and meningitis in acute myeloid leukemia. When we only considered the patients' responses, more of them admitted having had acne than did our controls. The remaining diseases--childhood viral diseases, infectious mononucleosis, smallpox, typhoid fever, dysentery, scarlet fever, tuberculosis, asthma, hay fever, and goiter did not occur more frequently in cases than in controls. The findings were consistent with evidence from previous laboratory and clinical studies. The increased occurrence of infectious hepatitis in our case series is consistent with the findings of other studies showing an increased frequency of Australia antigen in patients with hepatitis, leukemia, and Down's syndrome.

Panipenem/betamipron (PAPM/BP) was given by 30 minutes drip infusion to 15 children with acute bacterial infections including 11 with acute
pneumonia
, 2 each with staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome and urinary tract infections. Good to excellent clinical responses were obtained in all of the 15 patients and bacterial eradications were obtained for all 12 strains identified in these cases.
Urticaria
considered to be drug related was observed in 1 patient. Slight elevations of GOT and GPT and eosinophilia were observed in 1 case each. From the above clinical results, it appears that PAPM/BP is a useful antibiotic for treatment of pediatric patients with various bacterial infections.

Thirty-five patients with acute
pneumonia
of bacterial etiology were treated with josamycin at the dose of 2 g/day (adults) or 50 mg/kg/day (children). Therapeutic results were completely satisfactory (100% recovery) and the incidence of side-effects was very low (one case of
urticaria
).

A patient with ulcerative colitis developed skin allergy to sulfasalazine, manifested by rash
urticaria
and generalized angioedema. The patient underwent desensitization with the drug. After desensitization, the drug was reinstituted without any adverse skin reaction. However, 2 months later the patient developed a severe
pneumonitis
that resolved completely on discontinuation of sulfasalazine and administration of steroids. The relationship between the various adverse reactions to the drug is discussed and the entity "sulfasalazine pneumonitis" is reviewed.

A defined general population of 159,200 male and female native Swedes born in the period of 1911-1940, from an urban catchment area of the then only general hospital, was followed over a decade (1970-1979) with regard to inpatient hospitalization for all kinds of diagnoses. Psoriasis cases (n = 372) are significantly (p less than 0.001) associated with a spectrum of diseases: male as well as female psoriatics seem to show excess rates of viral infections, alcoholism, hypertension,
pneumonia
, liver cirrhosis,
urticaria
, and rheumatoid arthritis. Psoriasis in males only seem to be associated with iritis and ankylosing spondylitis, whereas psoriasis in females only is associated with lung cancer, diabetes, obesity, myocardial infarction and asthma.

During an 18-month adverse events surveillance period, children with a history of recurrent suspected or proved bacterial infections were treated with either cefaclor (1017 patients, 2513 courses) or amoxicillin (1009 patients, 2358 courses) and followed prospectively to determine the relative incidence and character of adverse events. Patients were from 1 month to 16 years old. Otitis media, the principal diagnosis, occurred in 883 patients (2014 episodes) receiving cefaclor and in 856 (1888 episodes) receiving amoxicillin. Others were diagnosed as having pharyngitis (482 episodes), bronchitis (267 episodes), sinusitis (130 episodes),
pneumonia
(63 episodes) and urinary tract infection (27 episodes). Adverse events were elicited by telephone during therapy and by follow-up for 2 weeks after therapy and were reported in 5.7% of the cefaclor courses and 5.2% of courses of amoxicillin. Serum sickness-like reactions and erythema multiforme occurred in 5 and 6 children, respectively, given cefaclor (1.1%) and in no children given amoxicillin. Children in the cefaclor group had a greater incidence of
urticaria
. Other adverse experiences, including gastrointestinal events, were approximately equally distributed for the two groups.

Clinical efficacies of a new macrolide antibiotic, rokitamycin (RKM, TMS-19-Q), were studied in acute pediatric infections. Responses to the RKM administration were evaluable in 62 out of 68 patients consisted of 7 patients with pharyngitis (efficacy rate of 85.7%, 6/7 patients), 4 with bronchitis (25.0%, 1/4), 9 with tonsillitis (100%, 9/9), 13 with mycoplasmal pneumonia (100%, 13/13), 13 with hemolytic streptococcal infections (92.3%, 12/13), 14 with
pneumonia
(57.1%, 8/14), one with pertussis (100%, 1/1) and another with Chlamydia
pneumonia
(100%, 1/1) thus an overall efficacy rate of 82.3% was achieved.
Urticaria
was observed in one of the patients as an adverse reaction to the drug, while abnormal laboratory test results were noted in 3 patients, but none of such changes were severe. The drug, even when administered in combination with a theophylline preparation, exerted no effects on the serum concentration of the latter.
