Purified house dust allergen has been employed for screening the susceptibility to inactivation of haemolytic complement in the blood serum of atopic individuals and control subjects. Though the atopic sera displayed a tendency to higher susceptibility, no practical distinction was possible from the sera of patients with various forms of chronic pulmonary disease, extrinsic allergic alveolitis, or urticaria. CH50 and C4 levels were unrelated to allergen-sensitivity of haemolytic complement, nor was there a correlation with the titers of naturally-occurring sheep red cell haemolysins. Although blood group specificity within the ABO system was distributed over the patients as expected for the normal population, the titers of A- and B-type antibodies displayed a trend to correlate with the allergen-sensitivity of fluid phase complement.

Many diseases caused by occupational exposures may have an allergic or immunopathogenetic basis. These include asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, the pulmonary disease-anemia syndrome, allergic contact dermatitis, and contact urticaria. This article discusses concepts important to the understanding of occupational forms of these diseases and provides approaches to their diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

A group of 46 farm workers (32 men), affected by a recurrent "occupational disease of undetermined origin", underwent an immunologic investigation with a Tetranychus urticae (TU) whole-body extract (TU-WBE) prepared in our laboratory. The patients suffered from seasonal attacks of rhinitis, during the summer and autumn periods, when working in open fields (30 subjects) or in greenhouse flower cultivation (16 subjects). In most patients, rhinitis was associated with bronchial asthma (16 subjects), urticaria (14 subjects), or both (three subjects). Allergic alveolitis or other common allergic diseases had been excluded, and a diagnosis of "occupational disease of undetermined origin" had been made before by other medical centers. Ten healthy farm workers and 10 atopic townsmen were chosen as control groups. An in vivo and in vitro diagnostic trial by skin prick testing (SPT) and serum specific IgE dosage with TU-WBE were done in all subjects. Thirty-six patients (78%) were found to be positive to both SPT and the IgE enzyme allergosorbent test (EAST), with a good correlation between IgE serum levels and cutaneous wheal size. Control groups did not show any reaction. The IgE-EAST homologous inhibition test was positive. The IgE-EAST cross-inhibition test excluded cross-reactivity between TU and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus. The TU-exposure test was positive for the 36 patients with TU-WBE-specific IgE. Three patients who were negative for TU-WBE-specific IgE reacted to the TU-exposure test; in these patients, the scratch-chamber test (Finn chamber) with eggs and droppings from TU was positive.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Objective:To annalyze the allergens distribution of patients with allergic rhinitis in Nanchong of Sichuan, and to provide basic information for the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and epidemiological studies.Method:Skin prick tests with 36 kinds of standard allergens were used to 3 621 patients with allergic rhinitis. All the patients were divided into different group on the basis of gender, age and history of allergic disease.Result:Allergen positive rate prick test was 73.73% in all patients. There were no significant differences in allergen positive rate between different gender (P> 0.05).The top five allergens were all inhaled allergens, such as House dust mites, dust mites, rape pollen, the French phoenix tree pollen, and cat hair.In different age groups, allergen positive rate of group A,was different from group B,group C and group D respectively(P< 0.05). Group B was different from group C and group D respectively(P< 0.05). There were no significant differences between group C and group D(P> 0.05). The groups with family history of allergic rhinitis, bronchial asthma and hypersensitivity pneumonitis respectively were different from its counterpart(P< 0.05). And there were no significant differences between group with urticaria and group with contact dermatitis (P> 0.05).Conclusion:The main allergens were inhaled allergens in Nanchong of Sichuan, such as dust mites, pollen, dust mites, rape French phoenix tree pollen, cat hair.Allergen positive rate has nothing to do with gender.Allergen positive rate was connected with age, history of allergic diseases(family history of allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma and a history of hypersensitivity pneumonitis).
