We reported a 48-year-old male who showed stimulus-sensitive spinal myoclonus due to chronic toluene intoxication. He has been exposed to thinner for more than 30 years as a painter, and occasionally experienced an episode of headache, nausea and dizziness because of acute thinner intoxication. He noted tremor of his hands 10 years ago. He also noticed memory disturbance since the end of 1997. Neurological examination revealed postural tremor of his fingers on the bilateral sides and the left arm. In addition, rhythmic myoclonic jerks were induced in the right upper limb muscles by a tendon tap given on the right brachioradialis muscles. Surface EMG revealed repetitive grouping discharges in those two muscles approximately 100 msec after the tendon tap which continued for about 30-50 msec. A long loop reflex (C-reflex) and giant SEPs were not observed in his right upper limb, and EEG showed no spike. Urinary excretion of N-benzoylglycine, which was a metabolite of toluene was increased (1.17 g/l). Therefore, he was diagnosed as a case of chronic toluene intoxication. His myoclonic jerks were considered to be stimulus-sensitive spinal myoclonus, because they were induced segmentally and because cortical hyperexcitability was not seen. This is the first report to describe the occurrence of stimulus-sensitive spinal myoclonus in the case of chronic toluene intoxication.

Aim of our study was to find a specific measure for the intensity of upper limb tremor and other ataxic symptoms in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients, and to establish standard values and test quality parameters. Three hundred and forty-two consecutive patients with different symptoms in the upper limbs (upper motor neuron symptoms, cerebellar upper limb ataxia, and/or sensory deficits in the upper limbs) and 140 healthy controls took part in the study. All patients and controls had to trace over a 25 cm high figure '8' on a graphic tablet, to tap with the stylus on the tablet and to perform the nine-hole-peg test (9HPT). Patients were additionally examined using clinical standard scales to classify motor dysfunctions of the upper limbs. One hundred and eighty-nine patients and 27 controls were tested twice to investigate the test reliability. Kinematic analysis of the tablet data was performed by kernel estimators, oscillatory activity by spectral analysis. Total power in the 2--10 Hz band was very specific for ataxia versus other motor symptoms. Tapping and 9HPT could well distinguish patients from controls, and patients with predominant motor neuron or cerebellar symptoms from patients with predominant sensory dysfunctions. Mean drawing error did not differ between motor and sensory dysfunctions. The test--retest reliability was similarly high for both spectral analysis and 9HPT.

We study by Monte Carlo simulation the compaction dynamics of hard dimers in two dimensions under the action of gravity, subjected to vertical and horizontal shaking, considering also the case in which a friction force acts for horizontal displacements of the dimers. These forces are modeled by introducing effective probabilities for all kinds of moves of the particles. We analyze the dynamics for different values of the time tau during which the shaking is applied to the system and for different intensities of the forces. It turns out that the density evolution in time follows a stretched exponential behavior if tau is not very large, while a power law tail develops for larger values of tau. Moreover, in the absence of friction, a critical value tau(*) exists, which signals the crossover between two different regimes: for tau<tau(*) the asymptotic density scales with a power law of tau, while for tau>tau(*) it reaches logarithmically a maximal saturation value. Such behavior smears out when a finite friction force is present. In this situation the dynamics is slower and lower asymptotic densities are attained. In particular, for significant friction forces, the final density decreases linearly with the friction coefficient. We also compare the frictionless single tap dynamics to the sequential tapping dynamics, observing in the latter case an inverse logarithmic behavior of the density evolution, as found in the experiments.

The differentiation of psychogenic from organic tremors, particularly those of a dystonic nature, can be difficult on clinical grounds. Entrainment of tremulous movements of different body parts into a single rhythm has been used clinically as a means of distinguishing these tremor forms, based on the inability of a patient with hysterical tremor to generate voluntary tapping oscillations independent of their ongoing tremor oscillation. The coherence entrainment test is a quantified electrophysiological entrainment test performed on accelerometer or surface EMG tremor signals. This test was carried out on 25 patients referred with suspected psychogenic tremor or dystonic tremor and on 10 normal subjects attempting to tap two independent voluntary oscillations. Using established and new clinical diagnostic criteria, patients were assigned the following final clinical diagnoses: 6 cases of clinically definite dystonic tremor, 5 cases of probable dystonic tremor, 2 cases of classic essential tremor, 5 cases of clinically definite psychogenic tremor, 3 cases of probable psychogenic tremor and 4 uncertain cases. On comparing these clinical diagnoses with those reached by a coherence entrainment test subsequently carried out on each patient, there was 100% concordance in both clinically definite and clinically probable patients. In uncertain cases, when later clinical information came to light, this also corroborated with the coherence entrainment diagnosis. No normal subjects were able to "mimic" organic tremor. The coherence entrainment test appears to be a sensitive and specific means of distinguishing psychogenic tremor from dystonic and other organic tremors.

We compare the predictions of two different statistical mechanics approaches, corresponding to different physical measurements, proposed to describe binary granular mixtures subjected to some external driving (continuous shaking or tap dynamics). In particular we analytically solve at a mean field level the partition function of a simple hard sphere lattice model under gravity and focus on the phenomenon of size segregation. We find that the two approaches lead to similar results and seem to coincide in the limit of very low shaking amplitude. However, they give different predictions of the crossovers from Brazil nut effect to reverse Brazil nut effect with respect to the shaking amplitude, which could be detected experimentally.

The adsorption characteristics of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), an anionic surfactant on neutral alumina were studied in detail. Alumina was found to be an efficient adsorbent for SDS and could be used for the removal of SDS from its highly concentrated (several thousand ppm) solution. The equilibrium time found was 2 h. Though the removal efficiency was low (approximately 65%) at neutral pH, but in slightly acidic condition and in the presence of NaCl the efficiency could be increased dramatically (up to >98%). The adsorption isotherm study showed distinct four regions. The effects of various other parameters such as adsorbent dose, time, and the presence of different ions (Cl-, NO3-, SO4(2-), and Fe3+), and nonionic surfactant on the SDS adsorption were also studied. It was observed that the adsorption capacity was increased due to the presence of these ions in general. After the adsorption of SDS on alumina, the surfactant-modified alumina (SMA) was used for the removal of crystal violet (CV), a well-known cationic dye from aquatic environment. The kinetic studies showed that 1 h shaking time was sufficient to achieve the equilibrium. The removal of CV followed the second order kinetics. Studies were conducted to see the effects of adsorbent dose and initial CV concentration on the removal of CV using SMA. The pH was maintained at 6.7+/-0.1. SMA was found to be very efficient, and approximately 99% efficiency could be achieved under optimised conditions for the removal of CV when present even at a high concentration (200 ppm). To test whether the removal of CV was possible from real water using SMA, the adsorption study was conducted using CV spiked samples using distilled water, tap water, and synthetically prepared wastewater. It was interesting to note that the removal efficiency was even better for tap water and much better for wastewater when compared to that using distilled water. Desorption of both SDS and CV from the SMA surface was possible using 1 M sodium hydroxide solutions.

Some Egyptian isolates of Bacillus thuringiensis (BT) were grown on economic media contain 4% of fodder yeast in tap water and incubated under shaking conditions for four days. The biological activities of these isolates against Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) were carried out to determine their effectiveness against field and laboratory strains of 3rd larval instar. All isolates of BT were more pathogenic to laboratory strain. causing up to 84% larval mortality. The insecticidal activities of these isolates were extended to the pupal stage causing a significant effect on pupal mortality in both strains tested. A pronounced effect on adult emergence was noticed with remarkable adult malformations especially in the case of the isolate No. 2. The reproductivety of females was affected significantly by all isolates applied.

Waterborne diseases constitute a threat to public health despite costly treatment measures aimed at removing pathogenic microorganisms from potable water supplies. This paper compared the removal of Raoultella terrigena ATCC 33257 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 by negatively and positively charged types of activated carbon particles. Both strains display bimodal negative zeta-potential distributions in stabilized water. Carbon particles were suspended to an equivalent external geometric surface area of 700 cm2 in 250 mL of a bacterial suspension, with shaking. Samples were taken after different durations for plate counting. Initial removal rates were less elevated for the positively charged carbon particle than expected, yielding the conclusion that bacterial adhesion under shaking is mass-transport limited. After 360 min, however, the log-reduction of the more negatively charged R. terrigena in suspension was largest for the positively charged carbon particles as compared with the negatively charged ones, although conditioning in ultrapure or tap water of positively charged carbon particles for 21 days eliminated the favorable effect of the positive charge due to counterion adsorption from the water. Removal of the less negatively charged E. coli was less affected by aging of the (positively charged) carbon particles, confirming the role of electrostatic interactions in bacterial removal by activated carbon particles. The microporous, negatively charged coconut carbon performed less than the mesoporous, positively charged carbon particle prior to conditioning but did not suffer from loss of effect after conditioning in ultrapure or tap water.

A stable chelating sorbent was synthesized by covalently linking 4-hydroxytoluene or 4-hydroxyacetophenone with the polyurethane foam (PUF) through -N=N- group. The synthesized chelating sorbents were characterized by IR and UV/vis measurements. The modified foams show excellent stability towards various solvents. Factors influencing the extraction process of Zn(II), Pb(II), Cd(II) and Hg(II) were studied and evaluated as a function of pH of metal ion solution and equilibration shaking time. The values of sorption capacity of metal ions (microg g(-1)) were determined with the two types of bonded foams. The two phenolic bonded foams were studied comparatively. The potential applications of the two newly synthesized foams for the removal and separation of the examined metal ions from two natural water samples (drinking tap water and Qaroun lake water at Fayoum City, Egypt) were investigated. Precision (assessed as a relative standard deviation, R.S.D.) was also evaluated and found to be < or =7.3% (N=5) with a detection limit under 0.46 microg L(-1).

Interactions between inputs of different sensory modality occur along the sensory pathway, including the thalamus. However, the temporal profile of such interaction has not been fully studied. In eight patients who had been implanted an intrathalamic electrode for deep brain stimulation as symptomatic treatment of tremor, we investigated the interactions between mechanical taps and electrical nerve stimuli. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded from Erb's point, cervical spinal cord, nucleus ventrointermedialis of the thalamus, and parietal cortex. A handheld electronic reflex hammer was used to deliver a mechanical tap to the skin overlying the first dorsal interosseous muscle and to trigger an ipsilateral digital median nerve electrical stimulus time-locked to the mechanical tap with a variable delay of 0 to 50 ms. There were significant time-dependent interactions between the two sensory volleys at the subcortical level. Thalamic SEPs were decreased in amplitude at interstimulus intervals (ISIs) from 10 to 40 ms with maximum effect at 20 ms (-42.8 +/- 10.5%; P < 0.001). A similar decrease was also seen in the number and frequency of the high-frequency components of thalamic SEPs (-25 +/- 4%). A smaller reduction (-18.1 +/- 5.8%; P < 0.001) was present in upper cervical response at ISI = 20 ms. There were no changes in peripheral responses. Cortical SEPs were almost completely absent in some subjects at ISIs from 20 to 50 ms. There were no changes in SEP latencies. Our results indicate that significant time-dependent interactions between sensory volleys occur at the subcortical level. These observations provide further insight into the physiological mechanisms underlying afferent gating between sensory volleys of different modality.
