At a
mercury
spill, several workers were exposed to
mercury
vapour concentrations up to 0.15 mg/m3. Two weeks after, 38 exposed workers were examined. Fourteen had a Hg in urine concentration above 25 nmol/l. Two exposed groups (n = 7) and an unexposed control group (n = 15) were formed, based on Hg in urine: a HI group with mean = 106.5 nmol/l (range: 49.5-249); a LO group with mean = 35.2 nmol/l (range: 28.8-48.0), and control group with mean = 10.5 nmol/l (range: 4.5-14.1). The groups were reexamined 3 and 16 months later. The groups were examined with two computer-based portable test systems. CATSYS quantifies hand pronation/supination, finger tapping, and reaction time.

vapor emitted from both natural and anthropogenic sources is globally distributed in the atmosphere. It is returned as a water-soluble form in precipitation and finds its way into bodies of fresh and ocean water. Land run-off also accounts for further input into lakes and oceans. Inorganic

, present in water sediments, is subject to bacterial conversion to methylmercury compounds that are bioaccumulated in the aquatic food chain to reach the highest concentration in predatory fish. Human exposure to
mercury
vapor is from dental amalgam and industries using
mercury
. Methylmercury compounds are found exclusively in seafood and freshwater fish. The health effects of
mercury
vapor have been known since ancient times. Severe exposure results in a triad of symptoms, erethism,
tremor
, and gingivitis. Today, we are concerned with more subtle effects such as preclinical changes in kidney function and behavioral and cognitive changes associated with effects on the central nervous system. Methylmercury is a neurological poison affecting primarily brain tissue. In adults, brain damage is focal affecting the function of such areas as the cerebellum (ataxia) and the visual cortex (constricted visual fields). Methylmercury also at high doses can cause severe damage to the developing brain. Today the chief concern is with the more subtle effects arising from prenatal exposure such as delayed development and cognitive changes in children.

is absorbed in small amounts from dental amalgam fillings. Exposure can be calculated by measuring the level of
mercury
in the blood or urine (u-Hg). The average u-Hg in Norwegians is approximately 2-3 micrograms/g creatinine (approximately 1-2 nmol/mmol creatinine). Classic signs of
mercury
poisoning occur in a fraction of long-term exposed subjects with u-Hg > 100 micrograms/g creatinine (56 nmol/mmol creatinine). Subtle effects (e.g. enzymuria, altered selenium metabolism, and changes in
tremor
spectra) have been reported in humans at average levels of 20-35 micrograms/g creatinine (approximately 11-20 nmol/mmol creatinine). There is widespread concern about possible adverse effects of
mercury
from amalgam fillings. Data on exposure-response relationships make it less likely that low-level
mercury
exposure from amalgam fillings should cause symptoms or physical signs. Studies of the association between symptoms and amalgam fillings have been negative. Patients with symptoms allegedly caused by
mercury
from amalgam should undergo thorough medical examination. Based on the patient's symptoms and physical signs adequate time should be allowed for careful recording of medical history, physical examination and relevant laboratory tests.

Although
mercury
vapor is known to produce
tremor
and peripheral neuropathy, neuropathological studies of the effects of the vapor are few in number. The aim of the present study has been to evaluate the effect of
mercury
vapor on the morphology of the dorsal root ganglion and the spinal nerve roots. Adult male rats were exposed to
mercury
vapor for 33 days. The exposed rats developed somatic signs of intoxication and became increasingly irritable. The total numbers and volumes of A- and B-cell perikarya in the dorsal root ganglia, the total number of myelinated axons in the roots, and the cross-sectional areas of axon and myelin in the nerve roots were estimated using unbiased stereological principles. The mean cross-sectional area of myelin associated with nerve fibers in dorsal nerve roots of the exposed group was significantly reduced by 20% (2P=0.014). A tendency towards a reduction was seen in axon area of myelinated nerve fibers in the dorsal nerve roots (2P=0.087) and in the total numbers and mean volume of A-cell perikarya (2P = 0.059 and 2P=0.087, respectively). No differences between the two test groups were found for any of the parameters measured in B-cells and ventral nerve roots. It is concluded that
mercury
vapor, in a dose sufficient to produce intoxication, induces only minor changes in dorsal root ganglion and nerve roots in rats.

To quantify rapid and precise proximo-distal movements, we have developed a simple system (eurythmokinesimeter or EKM) which requires the subject to touch alternately the center of proximal and distal targets with a stylus. Ninety-six participants, including 30 controls subjects, 36 Cree subjects exposed to
mercury
, 21 subjects with Parkinson disease, 6 with presumed cerebellar deficit, and 3 with essential
tremor
, participated in the study. A total of nine measures, including precision, imprecision, contact duration, unsureness,
tremor
, transit time, irregularity, speed, and Fitts' constant, were calculated. Test-retest reliability was above 0.8 for most measures and above 0.9 for many measures. Correlations between measures and number of outliers with respect to the control group distribution for each measure were used to reduce the set of measures to five (i.e., precision, imprecision,

, Fitts' constant, and irregularity). An ANOVA on the three largest groups generated significant results for

-gold amalgam. Examination revealed an intention tremor, dysdiadochokinesis and mild rigidity. The 24-h urinary

concentration reached a peak of 715 nmol/l (143 ug/l) shortly before the clinical examination, after which he was removed from working in the gold room [

Residents of a former factory building converted to apartments were exposed to

over a 2-year period. The neurobehavioral and emotional health effects of this exposure and subsequent evacuation are presented. Urine

levels were measured before (urine1) and 3-10 weeks after evacuation (urine2) of the building, when neurobehavioral and psychological measures were also completed. group made more errors on a test of fine motor function and 84% of the residents reported clinically significant elevations in somatic and psychologic symptoms. Although subclinical

Through 1996 into 1997, a spot investigation on
mercury
contamination was conducted three times in Tanzania, especially around the Lake Victoria. A total of 150 goldminers, 103 fishermen and their families, and 19 residents of Mwanza City volunteered for the current study. A high total
mercury
level of 48.3 ppm (near to 50 ppm, a critical level of Minamata disease) and over in the head hair was observed in six goldminers (highest value, 953 ppm), four fishermen and their families (highest value, 416 ppm), and four Mwanza people (highest value, 474 ppm). With the exception of these 14 subjects, however, each mean total
mercury
level was well within the normal range (below 10 ppm). Out of the goldminers examined, 14 cases were diagnosed as a mild form of inorganic-
mercury
poisoning according to their clinical symptoms (such as polyneuropathy mercurialis, neuroasthemia, or
tremor
mercurialis) and the low ratio of methylmercury to total
mercury
, whereas neither inorganic-
mercury
poisoning nor methylmercury poisoning (Minamata disease) was noted in the fishermen and their families or in the Mwanza people. In addition, some subjects who showed a high total

poisoning was made. Hasegawa dementia scale-revised (HDS-R), mini-mental state (MMS) examination and P300 examination were performed. HDS-R and MMS were within normal range but the latency of P300 was remarkably prolonged. His

was considered to be due to chronic inorganic poisoning because there were no other causes and the frequency of his
tremor
was 3-4 Hz. which was lower than that in essential
tremor
. The prolonged P300 latency was also considered to be due to the same cause because there were no other causes and the head MRI were normal. Chronic inorganic

Excessive manganese (Mn) has been associated with neurobehavioral deficits and neurological and/or neuropsychiatric illness, but the level at which this metal can cause adverse neurotoxic effects, particularly with long-term exposure, is still unknown. The objective of the present study was to assess nervous system functions in residents exposed to manganese from a variety of environmental sources. A random stratified sampling procedure was used to select participants; persons with a history of workplace exposure to Mn and other neurotoxic substances were excluded. A self-administered questionnaire provided data on socio-demographic variables. Blood samples were analyzed for total manganese (MnB), lead,
mercury
and serum iron. Nervous system assessment included computer and hand-administered neurobehavioral tests, computerized neuromotor tests, sensory evaluation and a neurological examination. The present analyses include 273 persons (151 women and 122 men); MnB range: 2.5 micrograms/L-15.9 micrograms/L (median: 7.3 micrograms/L). Multivariate analyses were used and neuro-outcomes were examined with respect to MnB, taking into account potential confounders and covariables. Results were grouped according to neurofunctional areas and MANOVA analyses revealed that higher MnB (7.5 micrograms/L) was significantly associated with changes in coordinated upper limb movements (Wilks' lambda = 0.92; p = 0.04) and poorer learning and recall (men: Wilks' lambda = 0.77; p = 0.002; women: Wilks' lambda = 0.86; p = 0.04). Further analyses revealed that with increasing log MnB (Simple regression: p < 0.05) performance on a pointing task was poorer, frequency dispersion of hand-arm
tremor
decreased, while harmonic index increased, and the velocity of a pronation/supination arm movement was slower. An Mn-age interaction was observed for certain motor tasks, with the poorest performance observed among those _50 y and in the higher MnB category. Differences between genders suggest that men may be at greater risk than women, although effects were also observed in women. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that Mn neurotoxicity can be viewed on a continuum of dysfunction, with early, subtle changes at lower exposure levels.
