E-cadherin, a member of the cadherin family, plays a major role in cell-cell adhesion of normal epithelium. Recent studies have shown that reduction or loss of E-cadherin expression in carcinomas have some relationship with their clinicopathological manifestation including invasion and metastasis. In the present study, we have established cell clones with different E-cadherin expression from human esophageal cancer, TE-2, and examined their adhesive capacity and invasiveness in vitro. Cell clones with positive E-cadherin expression [
ECD
(+) cells] were round and formed cobblestone colonies, while cell clones negative for E-cadherin [
ECD
(-) cells] had spindle shapes and formed dispersed colonies.

(+) cells showed higher adhesive capacity than
ECD
(-) cells, in both an aggregation assay with gyratory
shaking
culture and a dissociation assay of cells passing through the micropore membrane. Monoclonal antibody against human E-cadherin (HECD1) effectively diminished the mutual adhesion of
ECD
(+) cells but did not affect that of
ECD
(-) cells. Tumor invasiveness was evaluated with organotypic raft culture which is a coculture system consisting of two layers, a collagen gel layer containing fibroblasts and overlying reconstituted stratified squamous epithelium.

(-) cells did not.

Movement disorders in Japanese encephalitis (JE), although reported, have not been analyzed systematically. In this study, we report an analysis of movement disorders in 14 out of 17 JE patients, correlated with the radiological findings. All patients had at least a four fold rise of IgG antibodies against JE in a haemagglutination inhibition test. The patients' ages ranged between 2 and 54 years and 4 of them were women. Extrapyramidal signs, such as hypokinesia, hypophonia and masking of the face, were present in all patients by the first month as the patients came out of the coma-except for 1 patient. Eight patients had axial and 3 tongue dyskinesia; rigidity was present in 6 and
tremor
in 2 patients. At 3 months, these symptoms improved considerably in 6 patients. Cranial CT scan revealed thalamic involvement in 10, which was bilateral in 9 patients. Two patients had brain stem and one had cerebellar involvement. Cranial MRI was carried out in 9 patients and revealed additional findings in lentiform nucleus, midbrain and pons in 3 each and cerebellum in 4 patients. Bilateral thalamic involvement on MRI was seen in all the patients, including two patients whose CT scans were normal. SPECT studies using 99mTc-
ECD
revealed bilateral thalamic hypoperfusion in all (n = 7) and frontal hypoperfusion in 3 patients. In JE, movement disorders are common and may be due to thalamic involvement in isolation or in combination with basal ganglia or midbrain or both.

The AS/AGU rat is characterised by an ungainly, staggering gait, hind-limb rigidity, whole body
tremor
and (in older animals) difficulty in initiating movement. Brains of AS and AS/AGU males aged between 3 and 12 months (n = 10 per group) were sectioned transversely on a cryostat (-20 degrees C) to produce two successive cut faces (corresponding approximately to Bregma +1.2 and -0.5 mm) and 1 mm diameter x 1 mm deep micropunches were taken from four areas of the caudate-putamen. Levels of dopamine in all four areas (measured by HPLC-

followed by protein estimation) peaked at around 6 months and then declined in AS and AS/AGU rats. In the dorsal and lateral caudate-putamen, dopamine levels were significantly reduced in AS/AGU rats compared to AS controls from 6 months onwards. This provides further evidence that the AS/AGU mutant has impairment of its striatal dopaminergic systems.

To study the acute effects of internal pallidum stimulation, changes in cerebral blood flow were measured by means of a single-day split-dose protocol using 99Tc(m)-

SPET. Nine patients with advanced Parkinson's disease and with a clinical picture predominated by
tremor
and drug-induced dyskinesia, were imaged before and immediately after electrostimulation. Brain perfusion data were mirrored to the same electrode side (five left and four right implants), co-registered and analysed statistically on a voxel-by-voxel basis (Statistical Parametric Mapping) and by an automated volume-of-interest approach. Acute stimulation of the internal pallidum induced a significantly decreased perfusion in the ipsilateral thalamus and striatum, as well as in the right parietal cortex. For the subgroup of seven patients with effective motor score improvements, a significant correlation between thalamic and striatal perfusion changes and UPDRS III motor score was present (P = 0.04). These results suggest that effective stimulation of the internal globus pallidus may produce symptom relief through decreased activity in pallido-thalamo-cortical circuits.

The main problem with routine analyses of pentachlorophenol (PCP) and sodium pentachlorophenolate (Na-PCP) in wood and wood-based products is to determine critical PCP-contents. This task requires a reliable analytical method and statistical testing. An analytical procedure is described, which permits the determination of PCP and Na-PCP with sufficient sensitivity and accuracy. A medium size sieve (4 x 4 mm quadratic mesh) was found suitable for the grinding step. Different extraction techniques and solvents were tested systematically. We report a 67-year-old man and his family presenting pure akinesia (PA). He developed bradykinesia. A neurological examination showed a lack of facial expression but no

or rigidity. His eye movement was full, and he had frozen gait and pulsion symptoms. There was no evidence of dementia. Levodopa therapy was not effective. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed no brainstem and cerebellar atrophy. 99mTc-

-SPECT had no further abnormality. His father and brother had similar symptoms as him. We conclude that this family is the first reported example of pure akinesia with autosomal dominant inheritance.

SPECT. Subjects were scanned at rest and the data were compared with those of normal healthy volunteers. During stimulation, there were highly significant deactivations in the motor area and supplementary motor area on the electrode side and in the prefrontal area and the anterior cingulum bilaterally. A procedure of clean-up with H2SO4 after extraction with a
shaking
machine using n-hexane, and fast determination of some organochlorine residues in eggs by GC-
ECD
with PCB2 and PCB209 as internal standards was established. The test results showed that with this method satisfactory recoveries(84.31%-116.77%), relative standard deviation (6%-18%) and detection limits (0.07 ng/g-0.35 ng/g) could be obtained. In comparing with the Soxhlet method, this method is simpler in pre-treatment, lower in cost and less in sample amount. It can determine organochlorine pesticides and some PCBs in the same extract, simultaneously with enough accuracy, sensitivity and permissible RSD. It is a suitable procedure for determining micro-amounts of organochlorine pollutants in foods. The results showed that p, p'-DDE was detected in maximum; p, p'-DDT next; and PCBs very little, that were usually less than 10 ng/g in the eggs from some Chinese markets. It was found that most of PCBs in eggs were the congeners with 3-5 chlorine atoms.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether two different brands of unsupported and unlined nitrile gloves protected against aqueous emulsions of a Folpet wettable powder (50% Folpet) using an ASTM type-I-PTC 600 permeation cell at 30.0 +/- 0.1 degrees C held in a
shaking
water bath. An analytical method to determine Folpet using the internal standard method was first developed based on gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and gas chromatography-electron capture detection (GC-ECD). A novel pyrolysis GC-
ECD
technique that quantified the thermal degradation product phthalimide had pg sensitivity suitable to detect the trace amounts of Folpet that permeated. The on-column conversion was (68.0 +/- 9.5) percent at 170 degrees C over the folpet injected mass range of 3 to 148 pg. The challenge solution in the permeation cell was 1.4 mg/mL aqueous emulsion of Folpet wettable powder, and 2-propanol was the collection solvent. After evaporation of the collection solvent, the time weighted average rate of permeation of Folpet through SafeSkin nitrile (an exams type of glove) after 8 hours was (42.1 +/- 2.9) ng/cm(2)/min compared with (2.04 +/- 0.69) ng/cm(2)/min for the Sol-Vex nitrile (industrial chemical resistant), the latter being about 21 times more protective and also near the limits of detection. The respective values after 4 hours of exposure were (28.4 +/- 1.2) and (0.65 +/- 0.36) ng/cm(2)/min. Diagnostic reflectance infrared minima of both challenge and collection sides of the gloves showed small changes in wave number and intensity values after 8 hours of exposure, with Folpet being detected in dried spots on the challenge side. SPECT detected a decrease in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in the right corpus striatum. Administration of levodopa/DCI (100 mg/day) improved not only her left-sided rigidity but also the rCBF in the right corpus striatum. The ratio of rCBF in the right corpus striatum to that in the left corpus striatum increased from 96.03% to 99.26% on the three-dimensional stereotactic ROI template. These findings suggest that L-dopa may directly activate the metabolism in the bilateral corpus striatum, and that rCBF in the corpus striatum may be increased indirectly according to the increase of movement in the legs. And also it is suggested that denervation supersensitivity to dopamine may exist in the corpus striatum on the contralateral side of the signs and symptoms in this patient with hemiparkinsonism.
