Experience with a consecutive series of 125 computerized tomographic (CT) image guided stereotaxic neurosurgical procedures, performed using the Brown-Roberts-
Wells
(BRW) system is described. Operative objectives included tissue sampling for diagnostic purposes, intra-operative localization of craniotomy flaps and intracerebral lesions, cyst and abscess aspiration and lesion to modulate
tremor
. A neuropathological diagnosis was possible in 96% of the biopsies, and lesions were precisely localized in all patients undergoing microsurgical stereotaxic craniotomy. Two patients (2.2%) undergoing stereotaxic biopsy died as a result of the procedure and one patient's hemiparesis was permanently worsened (0.8%). In only one of three patients undergoing stereotaxic thalamotomy was
tremor
abolished. This report confirms that CT image guided stereotaxic neurosurgery is safe, accurate and versatile. There is, however, a moderate incidence (7.2%) of lesser complications that can occur with this type of surgery. These complications, which are emphasized in this paper, are related to both the site of surgery and the neuropathology.

An isocentered system for functional stereotactic procedures with the Cosman-Roberts-
Wells
frame and a CT localizer that allows extrapolation of target data directly from the CT slice is presented. Based on anatomical landmarks and on the scaled corresponding transverse plates of the Schaltenbrand and Wahren atlas, we delineate the thalamic and cerebellar nuclei. Twenty three image-directed functional procedures were performed in one year on 18 patients (7 with Parkinson's disease, 4 with dystonia, 3 persons with essential
tremor
, 2 patients with choreo-athetosis and 2 with de-afferentiation pain). The 23 procedures included 19 thalamotomies, two dentatotomies and two stereotactic implantations of deep seated brain electrodes. Successful targeting was verified by intra-operative electrical stimulation and postoperative CT scan. Complete reduction of symptoms was observed in 4 persons with Parkinson's disease and in 2 patients with essential
tremor
with significant improvement observed in the rest of the patients with the exception of the individual with choreo-athetosis. There were no operation-related complications. The reported technique is safer and less distressing for patients than previous radiological procedures and it makes image-directed stereotactic functional neurosurgery available to many units with the CRW frame.

Response of GG plants to mechanical stress depended on light intensity, with minimum growth reduction occurring under full light (FL) level, and maximum growth reduction occurring under lower light levels (24-45% FL). Reduction in dry weight gain due to mechanical stress corresponded to a decrease in relative growth rate (RGR). Decreases in net assimilation rate and leaf area ratio contributed equally to the lower RGR of shaken plants, indicating that seismic stress inhibits dry weight accumulation by decreasing both the photosynthetic efficiency and the assimilatory surface of soybean.

Relative growth rate (RGR), leaf water potential (psi w), transpiration rate (Tr), photosynthetic rate (Pn), and stomatal and mesophyll resistances to CO2 exchange were measured or calculated to determine how periodic seismic (
shaking
) stress decreased dry weight accumulation by soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merrill cv
Wells
II). Seismic stress was applied with a gyratory shaker at 240 to 280 revolutions per minute for 5 minutes three times daily at 0930, 1430, and 1930 hours. Fifteen days of treatment decreased stem length 21%, leaf area 17%, and plant dry weight 18% relative to undisturbed plants. Seismic stress also decreased RGR 4%, which was due entirely to decreased net assimilation rate. Transpiration decreased 17% and leaf psi w increased 39% 30 minutes after treatment. A reduction in Pn began within seconds after the onset of treatment and had declined 16% after 20 minutes, at which time gradual recovery began. Assimilation rate recovered fully before the next seismic treatment 5 hours later. Resistance analysis and calculation of leaf internal CO2 levels indicated that the transitory decrease in Pn caused by periodic seismic stress was due to increased stomatal resistance on the abaxial leaf surface.

The assessment of new therapeutic strategies to cure surfactant-associated lung disorders would greatly benefit from assay systems allowing routine evaluations of surfactant functions. We present a method to measure surfactant adsorption kinetics into interfacial air-liquid interfaces based on fluorescence microplate readers. The method has been tested and validated by using phospholipids or surfactants of different origins, by using albumin as surfactant inhibitor, and by comparison of results with Wilhelmy balance measurements. The method is suited for implementation in high-throughput screening routines for conditions affecting, or improving, surfactant film formation. In contrast to surface tension measurements, our method gives a direct readout of the amount of surfactant adsorbing into the interface, including the functionally important amount of material firmly associating with the interfacial film.
