using the isolant for challenge in laboratory trials. The isolant was passed through a 0.22 mu. filter. It was heat (56 C), acid pH (3.0), ether and chloroform labile. In embryos it produced deaths or lesions of infectious bronchitis in one to five days after inoculation. It is suggested that this IBV isolant be designated Indiana-type.

Twenty-five pediatric orthotopic liver transplantations (OLTs) performed in 22 patients at Sainte-Justine Hospital were reviewed for infections complications. One patient died within 12 hours posttransplantation and is excluded. The patients had an average age of 6.1 years (range, 1.25 to 19 years) and an average weight of 20.4 kg (range, 11 to 55 kg). Two patients (9%) were cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositive and 9 of 19 patients (48%) were Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) seropositive preoperatively. Five of the donors (20%) were CMV seropositive. The most common indications for OLT were biliary atresia (8) and tyrosinemia (7). There were 4 deaths, for an overall mortality rate of 19%. In 3 patients, deaths were related to infection (CMV hepatitis and duodenitis with aortoduodenal fistula, adult respiratory distress syndrome [ARDS] with Streptococcus viridans pneumonia, Escherichia coli cholangitis with progressive hepatic failure). Fifteen patients (72%) had 41 major infections, most of them bacterial, during the first month posttransplantation. These include pneumonia (25%), line sepsis (17%), cholangitis (14%), and
tracheitis
(14%). There was only one major
viral infection
, a CMV hepatitis that occurred in the first month posttransplantation. Three patients had fungal infections (8%) associated with hepatic artery thrombosis and recurrent cholangitis. All three patients required retransplantation. There was only one protozoal infection (Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia) causing life-threatening respiratory failure, from which patient recovered without sequelae. Infection still remains a serious complication of OLT. Bacterial infection is common and is usually associated with technical complications. The low rate of CMV infection is related to low incidence of CMV in the donor pool and the minimal use of strong immunosuppressants.

Immunohistochemical analysis of lymphoid tissues demonstrated a small, randomly distributed population of mononuclear cells that contained bovine viral diarrhea viral antigen in 7/8 calves.

Bacterial tracheitis, previously referred to as nondiphtheritic laryngitis with marked exudate, was commonly discussed in pediatric textbooks before 1940. Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are responsible for a large amount of community antibacterial use worldwide. Recent systematic reviews have demonstrated that most URTIs resolve naturally, even when bacteria are the cause. The high consumer expectation for antibacterials in URTIs requires intervention by the general practitioner and a number of useful strategies have been developed. Generic strategies, including eliciting patient expectations, avoiding the term 'just a virus', providing a value-for-money consultation, providing verbal and written information, empowering patients, conditional prescribing, directed education campaigns, and emphasis on symptomatic treatments, should be used as well as discussion of alternative medicines when relevant. Syncytial cells were conspicuous, especially in the oral mucosa, pulmonary alveoli, liver, and lymphoid tissues. In addition to the typical tissue distribution, eosinophilic intracytoplasmic and/or intranuclear inclusions were observed in epithelial cells lining the renal pelvis and abomasal mucosa. Immunolabeling of the viral antigen was observed in the kidney, brain, rumen, abomasum, heart, and myocytes of the tongue besides its more typical locations. In this study, we report and describe in detail the first peste des petits ruminants endemic in Kirikkale Province, Central Anatolia of Turkey. An H3N8 influenza virus closely related to equine influenza virus was identified in racing greyhound dogs with respiratory disease in 2004 and subsequently identified in shelter and pet dogs. Pathologic findings in dogs spontaneously infected with canine influenza virus were compared with lesions induced in beagle and mongrel dogs following experimental inoculation with influenza A/canine/Florida/43/2004.
