Acute lingual tonsillitis
is a rarely diagnosed cause of sore throat. The patient with acute lingual
tonsillitis
typically has severe sore throat, dysphagia and pain at the level of hyoid bone, and it is interesting that patients with previous palatine tonsillectomy can present with almost normal oral examination findings. The diagnosis of potentially fatal epiglottitis should be excluded. Because the base of the tongue can not be visualized by intraoral examination, diagnosis must be made by indirect or transnasal fiberoptic laryngoscopy.
