Postoperative supraventricular tachyarrhythmia (SVT) remains the most common complication of cardiovascular surgery. Current guidelines recommend treatment with beta-blockers in prevention and management of postoperative atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery. Landiolol hydrochloride is a newly developed ultra short-acting selective beta1-blocker with a half-life of approximately 4 minutes. We investigated its effects on the cardiac function as well as on postoperative SVT. Landiolol hydrochloride had a sufficient therapeutic effect without apparent side effect. After its administration cardiac index decreased, whereas stroke volume increased. Pulmonary artery wedge pressure, pulmonary artery pressure, and central venous pressure remained unchanged.
