Anterior staphylomas developed in two young patients as a postoperative complication of hyphema extractions through corneoscleral sections. The patients, aged five and nine years, underwent evacuation of the hyphemas after rebleeding caused medically unmanageable intraocular pressure elevations. Postoperatively, both patients received corticosteroids and had elevation of intraocular pressure. To repair the staphyloma, a scleral overlay patch graft was performed in one patient, but the intraocular pressure remained elevated and the staphyloma gradually recurred. Enucleation of the eye was eventually required. Resection of the staphylomatous area with lensectomy and complete vitrectomy was performed in the second patient. After four years of follow-up this patient continues to do well.

In facial hemiatrophy two different types are known: the progressive acquired type, which is relatively more common, and the rare congenital non progressive form. Two children--both with congenital facial hemiatrophy--are presented, both showed a (horizontally and vertically) smaller lid fissure and antimongoloid configuration of the lid. In addition in one case we could observe: small corneal diameter, staphyloma posticum, paving stone degeneration of the retina, convergent strabismus, and vertical deviation, in the other case: ptosis, major astigmatism, and latent divergent strabismus.

A case of congenital scleral staphyloma was treated with a preserved homologous peritoneum graft. A 2-year-old female poodle with a blue-gray mass in a dorsal and temporal position of the sclera of the left eye was evaluated. The repair of the scleral defect with a graft of preserved homologous peritoneum reduced the strabismus and the size of the staphyloma, and improved the cosmetic appearance of the eye.

A neonate had a globular mass bulging through the eyelids of the left eye. Computed tomography revealed a large ectatic corneal lesion and the absence of a lens. The enucleated globe revealed that the posterior surface of the ectatic cornea was lined by iris tissue, indicating corneal staphyloma.

We describe recurrent bilateral homocystinuria-related lens dislocation into the anterior chamber in a patient who had postoperative anterior staphyloma and secondary intractable aphakic glaucoma in only one eye. We discuss the possible causes of and treatment modalities for this complication.

Three siblings with ectopia lentis were examined for associated abnormalities. Case 1 had Axenfeld-Rieger anomaly and retinal detachment. Case 2 had Axenfeld-Rieger anomaly, ciliary staphyloma, and glaucoma. Case 3 had no associated ocular abnormality. The parents had normal eyesight. This is the first report of ectopia lentis associated with Axenfeld-Rieger anomaly. The mode of inheritance is likely autosomal recessive.

Staphyloma in the anterior segment of the eye is a rare abnormality of development. Histopathologic and electron microscopic studies suggest that the alteration occurs during embryogenesis. This report describes a 1-year-old girl with protrusion of the cornea between the eyelids in the left eye. Surgical removal of the staphyloma was performed, with reconstruction of the eyeball and total corneoscleral transplant. The clinical and histopathologic findings were typical of congenital anterior staphyloma. Although most affected patients are treated with enucleation, corneoscleral transplant provides a good cosmetic option in these cases.

The authors report two cases of congenital retrobulbar cyst or large peripapillary staphyloma with alcoholic mothers. In the first case, a 53-day-old newborn was referred for evaluation of microphthalmia in her left eye. Ophthalmic examination showed microcornea, microphthalmia, and an abnormally enlarged optic disc with an excavation in her left eye. Imaging revealed the presence of a cystic lesion in her left orbit that seemed to be communicated with the vitreous cavity. She did not have chromosomal abnormality. In the second case, a large peripapillary staphyloma was detected in the right eye of a 7-month-old newborn. The mother of each patient was an alcoholic. Retrobulbar cystic lesion or peripapillary staphyloma could be considered to be a series of abnormalities caused by the degree of the failure of the optic cup. Effects of each mother's alcohol intake on the development of the eye, especially the closure of the optic cup, is to be further investigated.
