Thermal inactivation of rabies and several other rhabdoviruses was studied using virus suspended in several different diluents. Rabies serogroup viruses were more stable than Kern Canyon or vesicular
stomatitis
viruses. Limited studies of two fish rhabdoviruses requiring low temperatures (less than 33 C) for replication indicated that they were not markedly more thermolabile than rabies virus. Bovine
serum protein
components in complex cell culture media stabilized virus at 56 C, but at temperatures of less than or equal to 37 C, sodium tris (hydroxymethyl)-aminomethane (NT) buffer containing ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) (NTE) was a much more efficient stabilizer of virus infectivity. Chelating agents EDTA and ethyleneglycol-bis-(beta-aminoethyl ether)tetraacetic acid were equally efficient in protection of rabies virus infectivity; the effect of each was lost when excess Ca2+ was added. Bovine serum in NT or NTE buffers produced a thermostabilizing effect at 37 C not provided by the same serum concentration in complex cell culture media. Bovine serum was more efficient than EDTA in stabilizing virus infectivity during repeated cycles of freezing and thawing.

Intravenous immunoglobulins and
serum protein
solutions are manufactured from human plasma pools of healthy, screened donors. A step-by-step validation of virus removal and/or inactivation was performed for the manufacturing process, which includes cold ethanol fractionation, beta-propiolactone (beta-PL) treatment, UV irradiation, thermal inactivation and other chemical and physical purification steps. The total viral clearance factors achieved for the entire manufacturing process were by several magnitudes greater than the potential virus load of current plasma pools. Human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) infectivity was reduced by > 13.4 log for 7S immunoglobulin, > 15.3 log for IGM enriched immunoglobulin and > 16 log for a 5%
serum protein
solution. In addition, high clearance rate for a broad spectrum of model viruses was demonstrated for all three blood derivatives being > 23.2 to > 27.8 log for pseudo rabies virus (PSR), > 12.3 to > 22.6 log for vesicular
stomatitis
virus (VSV) and 6.9-10.6 log for simian virus 40 (SV40). For the beta-propiolactone inactivation step Hepatitis C model viruses, e.g. equine arteritis virus (EAV) and bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) were also investigated.

A protein malnutrition survey was carried out in ten areas of four States of South India among children under 5 years of age in families with a monthly income of less than Rs 100, estimated to constitute 85% of the population. The agricultural situation and socio-economic conditions are described. The diets investigated consisted largely of cereals, with small quantities of pulses and green vegetables; milk, meat and eggs were little eaten. The survey covered investigation of infant care, feeding and weaning practices, clinical examinations, anthropometric measurements, determinations of haemoglobin and
serum protein
, and analysis of hospital records.Although infants were usually breast-fed for a long time, the quantity of breast milk was found to be low after 6 months, at which time supplementary foods were introduced, but these were usually inadequate. Extreme growth retardation was seen after weaning. Diarrhoea was complained of in some 20% of children. Such deficiency signs as dyschromotrichia, hepatomegaly, moon face, angular
stomatitis
and xerophthalmia were frequently seen. Frank cases of kwashiorkor and marasmus were observed in 1% and 1.7% respectively of children at home. These findings and others clearly show protein malnutrition to be a problem of very considerable magnitude in the poorer communities of South India. A comparison is made with the results of surveys conducted in Africa and in Central America.
