Recently accumulated knowledge allows more precise comparison of the structural (and possibly evolutionary) relationships of several different animal rhabdoviruses: vesicular
stomatitis
virus, rabies virus, Kern Canyon virus, and spring
viremia
of carp virus. Each virus is composed primarily of a glycoprotein, an RNA-associated nucleoprotein, and one or two membrane proteins. Vesicular stomatitis virus group viruses contain lesser amounts of two additional distinct polypeptides, NS and L. The separate viruses undergo structural polypeptide phosphorylation in vivo according to characteristic patterns. In vesicular
stomatitis
virus the NS protein is selectively phosphorylated. In rabies group viruses and in spring
viremia
of carp virus, the nucleoprotein is the predominant phosphoprotein; in these viruses only the phosphorylated moiety is selectively cleaved off with trypsin. In Kern Canyon virus, only membrane protein and glycoprotein are weakly phosphorylated. Each virus possesses a virion-bound protein kinase. Vesicular stomatitis virus group viruses, Kern Canyon virus, and spring
viremia
of carp virus only contain virion-bound transcriptases of respectively decreasing levels of activity demonstrable in vitro. Vesicular stomatitis and Kern Canyon viruses replicate efficiently in enucleated cells; rabies virus does not. Based upon these observations, it is suggested that vesicular
stomatitis
virus may represent the most highly evolved of these rhabdoviruses, whereas spring
viremia
of carp and Kern Canyon viruses may represent "evolutionary links" between the vesicular
stomatitis
and rabies virus groups.

Recovery of herpes simplex virus (HSV) Type 1 from the blood buffy coat of four adults is reported for the first time. All of the patients had vesicular
stomatitis
and facial vesicles; two also had either keratoconjunctivitis or disseminated skin lesions. The infection was not the primary one with HSV in any of them. Two of three patients who had renal failure were receiving immunosuppressive drugs; one patient was normal except for alcoholism and diabetes. None developed signs of visceral organ infection and all recovered within 2 to 4 weeks. The findings demonstrate the occurrence of heretofore unrecognized nonfatal HSV Type 1

in both healthy and immunosuppressed leukocytes, can occur regardless of the presence of serum antibody, and may or may not be associated with the disseminated lesions.

of carp virus (SVCV). The optimal temperature for in vitro synthesis of RNA was 20 to 25 degrees C. The SVCV enzyme activity was stimulated when the methyl donor S-adenosyl-L-methionine was included in the reaction mixture. S-adenosyl-L-methionine was not particularly effective in stimulating the virion RNA polymerase activity of vesicular
stomatitis

Viruses isolated from fish with viral haemorrhagic septicaemia (VHS), infectious haematopoietic necrosis (IHN), spring
viraemia
of carp (SVC), swim-bladder inflammation (SBI) and pike fry disease (PFD) have been grown to high titre in fathead minnow cells. While our preparations of the IHN, SVC, SBI and PFD viruses showed typical rhabdovirus morphology with bullet-shaped particles and distinct surface projections, the VHS virus preparations had a less typical rhabdovirus morphology but were pleomorphic with a preponderance of flexuous rods. Using virus labelled with [-3H]-uridine, it was shown that each virus contained RNA which sedimented at 38 to 40 S and was hydrolysed by very low concentrations of ribonuclease. The viruses of SVC, PFD and SBI had a polypeptide composition similar to that of vesicular
stomatitis
virus, the prototype rhabdovirus, but the IHN and VHS viruses gave a pattern similar to that of rabies virus. In serum neutralization tests the SVC and SBI viruses were indistinguishable. VHS virus showed no serological relationship with the other four viruses but there was a low level of cross-reaction between the PFD, IHN and SVC-SBI viruses.

Proteins from four fish rhabdoviruses have been studied by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The viruses were: trout viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS), infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHN), spring

virus of carp (SVC), and the pike fry rhabdovirus (PFR). For the two salmonid viruses (VHS-IHN), gel electrophoresis indicated the proteins, with molecular weights estimated to be 190,000, 80,000, 38,000, 25,000, and 19,000, respectively. The electrophoretic profile of the two other viruses (SVC-PFR) revealed four major proteins with molecular weights of 190,000 80,000 42,000 and 21,000, respectively. In this case a minor component with 50,000 daltons was found. For each virus only one protein was found to be glycosylated, i.e., the one with a molecular weight of 80,000. A major protein (molecular weight between 38,000 and 42,000) was found to be associated with the nucleocapsid. All these results revealed marked similarities in protein structure between the four fish rhabdoviruses and the previously well-characterized members of rhabdovirus group. However, one can distinguish two groups of viruses: the first one is composed of salmonid viruses (VHS and IHN) with a protein structure comparable to that of rabies virus and potato yellow dwarf virus; the second one is composed of carp and pike viruses, having a protein structure very similar to that of vesicular
stomatitis
virus.

A representative sample of the pet cat population of the United Kingdom was surveyed. Blood samples from 1204 sick and 1007 healthy cats of known breed, age and sex were tested for antibodies to feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV). The prevalence of FIV was 19 per cent in sick cats and 6 per cent in healthy cats, and the prevalence of FeLV was 18 per cent in sick cats and 5 per cent in healthy cats; both infections were more common in domestic cats than in pedigree cats. Feline immunodeficiency virus was more prevalent in older cats but FeLV was more prevalent in younger cats. There was no difference between the prevalence of FeLV in male and female cats but male cats were more likely to be infected with FIV than female cats. No interaction was demonstrated between FIV and FeLV infections. Of the cats which were in contact with FIV in households with more than one cat, 21 per cent had seroconverted. The prevalence of FeLV
viraemia
in cats in contact with FeLV was 14 per cent. The clinical signs associated with FIV were pyrexia, gingivitis/
stomatitis
and respiratory signs, and with FeLV, pyrexia and anaemia. It was concluded that both viruses were significant causes of disease, and that the cats most likely to be infected with FIV were older, free-roaming male cats and for FeLV, younger, free-roaming cats.

We describe the identification, experimental transmission, and pathogenesis of a naturally occurring powerfully immunosuppressive isolate of feline leukemia virus (designated here as FeLV-FAIDS) which induces fatal acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in 100% (25 of 25) of persistently viremic experimentally infected specific pathogen-free (SPF) cats after predictable survival periods ranging from less than 3 months (acute immunodeficiency syndrome) to greater than one year (chronic immunodeficiency syndrome), depending on the age of the cat at time of virus exposure. The clinical onset of immunodeficiency syndrome correlates with the replication of a specific FeLV-FAIDS viral variant, detected principally as unintegrated viral DNA, in bone marrow, lymphoid tissues, and intestine. Two of seven cats with chronic immunodeficiency disease that survived greater than 1 year after inoculation developed lymphoma affecting the marrow, intestine, spleen, and mesenteric nodes. Experimentally induced feline immunodeficiency syndrome, therefore, is a rapid and consistent in vivo model for prospective studies of the viral genetic determinants, pathogenesis, prevention, and therapy of retrovirus-induced immunodeficiency disease.

The complete nucleotide sequence of the mRNA of the matrix (M) protein of vesicular
stomatitis
virus [New Jersey serotype, VSV(NJ)] was derived from a cDNA clone and mRNA. The mRNA is 758 nucleotides long (excluding polyadenylic acid) and encodes a protein of 229 amino acids. The predicted amino acid sequence was compared with that of the corresponding protein of Indiana serotype [VSV(IND)] and a fish rhabdovirus, spring

of carp virus (SVCV). An amino acid identity of 62% was found between the M proteins of VSV(NJ) and VSV(IND) while only 24% was present between VSV(NJ) and SVCV. A highly basic NH2-terminal domain followed by a proline-proline-X-tyrosine sequence was present in all the three M polypeptides. Except for the L gene sequence, the complete nucleotide sequence of the four genes of VSV(NJ) are now known. The comparison of the amino acid sequences between the Indiana and New Jersey serotypes demonstrates a high degree of homology between these genes except for the phosphoprotein gene, NS.

The induction of interferon (IF) by lactic dehydrogenase virus (LDV) and the action of exogenous IF on LDV multiplication have been studied in vivo and in vitro. In vivo the induction of serum IF by LDV was shown to correspond with the virus challenge dose. In vitro LDV-infected macrophages did not produce detectable IF. As to the action of IF in vivo, the prophylactic or therapeutic administration of IF to mice reduced the LDV serum titers only temporarily. In vitro, (i) the sensitivity of LDV to IF in macrophage culture was 30 times less than that of vesicular
stomatitis
virus, and 5 times less than that of Sendai virus, and (ii) prolonged exposure of LDV-infected macrophages to high IF concentrations did not cure the chronic infection, but only decreased the virus titer. The probable role of IF in the establishment of the early phase of a persistent but reduced

or rabies virus proteins were phosphorylated in a cell-free system by the virion-associated protein kinase and analyzed for the presence of phosphorylated amino acid residues, phosphoserine was again found to be more abundant than phosphothreonine.
