The DNAs of eight parapoxviruses (four stomatitis papulosa viruses isolated from infected calves, a pseudocowpox virus isolated from a teat lesion of an infected cow and three orf viruses, one isolated from an infected sheep and two isolated from human infections) were analysed in CsCl gradients. The mole % of G+C was calculated from the buoyant density and found to be approx. 63% for all virus isolates examined. Parapoxvirus DNA thus has by far the highest G+C content of all poxvirus DNAs so far examined.

In order to investigate the mode of interaction of peripheral membrane proteins with the lipid bilayer, the basic (pI approximately 9.1) matrix (M) protein of vesicular stomatitis virus was reconstituted with small unilamellar vesicles (SUV) containing phospholipids with acidic head groups. The lateral organization of lipids in such reconstituted membranes was probed by fluorescent phospholipid analogues labeled with pyrene fatty acids. The excimer/monomer (E/M) fluorescence intensity ratios of the intrinsic pyrene phospholipid probes were measured at various temperatures in M protein reconstituted SUV composed of 50 mol % each of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dipalmitoylphosphatidylglycerol (DPPG). The M protein showed relatively small effects on the E/M ratio either in the gel or in the liquid-crystalline phase. However, during the gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition, the M protein induced a large increase in the E/M ratio due to phase separation of lipids into a neutral DPPC-rich phase and DPPG domains presumably bound to M protein. Similar phase separation of bilayer lipids was also observed in the M protein reconstituted with mixed lipid vesicles containing one low-melting lipid component (1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylphosphatidylcholine or 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoylphosphatidylglycerol) or a low mole percent of cholesterol. The self-quenching of 4-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole (NBD) fluorescence, as a measure of lipid clustering in the bilayer, was also studied in M protein reconstituted DPPC-DPPG vesicles containing 5 mol % NBD-phosphatidylethanolamine (NBD-PE). Some alloys used in restorative dentistry may evoke an allergic contact stomatitis in certain persons. In order to protect patients from materials with undesired reactions, and considering corrosion characteristics of different alloys used, it is useful to devise an adequate patch test battery to include the most relevant metals. Dental alloys are composed of a combination of various metals. 12 different ions of frequent occurrence (Au3+, Pd2+, Zn2+, Mo6+, Sn2+, Ga3+, In3+, Co2+, Cr3+(6+), Ni2+, Fe2+(3+) and Si4+) were epicutaneously tested as the aqueous solution of the respective salt. The concentrations are given in g/100 ml and also in m.mole/l. The 12 different metal ion solutions were patch tested on patients in 3 groups: one group with a positive history of contact stomatitis (30 patients, group 1), one group with a positive history of contact dermatitis (16 patients, group 2), and a control group (17 persons, group 3). In contrast to the control group, a remarkable high percentage (11%) of positive skin reactions to Pd was found in groups 1 and 2. No allergic or irritant skin reactions were detected to Ga, Sn and Zn. No irritant reaction was observed at pH values as low as 1.5. In the case of SiCl4 (pH = 0.5), 41% positive irritant reactions were evoked. In the group with a positive history of contact dermatitis (group 1), a positive reaction was found more often (69%) than in the group with a positive history of contact stomatitis (30%) (group 2). The vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein reconstituted into dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) vesicles exerts a profound effect upon the DPPC gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition. The glycoprotein was reconstituted into DPPC vesicles by octyl glucoside dialysis. The gel to liquid-crystalline phase transition of these vesicles was monitored by differential scanning calorimetry. Vesicles formed in the absence of glycoprotein (600--2100-A diameter) underwent the phase transition at 41.0 degrees C and had an associated enthalpy change of 8.0 +/- 1.6 kcal/mol. Increasing the mole ratio of glycoprotein to DPPC in the vesicles to 0.15 mol % reduced both the transition temperature and the transition enthalpy change. The enthalpy change as a function of the mole percent glycoprotein could be fit to a straight line by a least-squares procedure. Extrapolation of the results to the glycoprotein concentration where the enthalpy change was zero indicated one glycoprotein molecule bound 270 +/- 150 molecules of DPPC.

A total of 9,955 schoolchildren aged 6-16 years have been examined in a tropical region. The prevalence of dermatosis varied from 21 to 87% in the municipalities surveyed. The most common dermatoses were pediculosis (prevalence 50%), nevi (16.8%), pityriasis versicolor (13.2%), pyoderma (12.2%), pityriasis alba (9.9%), dermatophytosis (6.2%), viral dermatosis (6.2%), scabies (3.0%) and acne vulgaris (2.7%). The prevalence of angular stomatitis, miliaria rubra, candidiasis, piedra nigra, keratosis pilaris, ephelides and geographic tongue is lower but still relatively high. Females had higher rates of pediculosis capitis and males higher prevalence of pityriasis alba. The prevalence of pityriasis versicolor, pigmented nevus and scabies was similar in males and females. Folliculitis, macular pigmented nevi and especially pityriasis versicolor tended to increase with age. Leprosy is hyperendemic in the surveyed area and its rate in the schoolchildren examined was 0.08%. Population movement (urbanization), socioeconomic situation, living conditions, promiscuity, and lack of hygiene may be the cause of such high prevalence and of association of two or more skin conditions. Climatic conditions might have enhanced the prevalence of certain dermatoses (pityriasis versicolor, dermatophytosis, piedra nigra, candidiasis, miliaria rubra).

White lesions of the oral cavity are quite common and can have a variety of etiologies, both benign and malignant. Although the vast majority of publications focus on leukoplakia and other potentially malignant lesions, most oral lesions that appear white are benign. This review will focus exclusively on reactive white oral lesions. Included in the discussion are frictional keratoses, irritant contact stomatitis, and smokeless tobacco keratoses. Leukoedema and hereditary genodermatoses that may enter in the clinical differential diagnoses of frictional keratoses including white sponge nevus and hereditary benign intraepithelial dyskeratosis will be reviewed. Many products can result in contact stomatitis. Dentrifice-related stomatitis, contact reactions to amalgam and cinnamon can cause keratotic lesions. Each of these lesions have microscopic findings that can assist in patient management.
