From 1980 to 1988 235 koalas were necropsied and 67 were found to have urinary tract disease. Six affected koalas out of 48 were derived from wildlife parks around Sydney while 61 of 187 were derived from free living populations on the central and north coasts of New South Wales. Sixteen had cystitis alone, 5 had cystitis and associated renal disease only, 16 females had cystitis with genital disease, 23 had urinary disease in combination with other systemic disease and 7 had renal disease only. Overall 49 animals had cystitis (30 females and 19 males; 47 being free living) with 12 of these having renal extension (all free living). Cystitis tended to be active but chronic while associated renal disease was mainly designated as
hydronephrosis
and pyelonephritis. Other forms of renal disease included lymphosarcoma, oxalate nephrosis, acute and chronic nephritis, and microabscessation related to septicaemia. Female genital disease associated with cystitis was commonly vaginitis and metritis. Paraovarian cysts were detected with and without metritis. , pneumonia and hepatic disease. The higher prevalence of urinary tract disease in free living koalas, especially cystitis, is in contrast to captive koalas and may reflect the interaction between disease cause and habitat.

TS-1, a DPD inhibitory fluoropyrimidine, is a novel oral formation of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). In patients with advanced gastric cancer, the response rate was reportedly over 40%. We report three cases of advanced gastric cancer treated using TS-1 in combination with a low-dose of cisplatinum (CDDP) that well responded. Case 1: A 62-year-old women underwent total gastrectomy. Ten weeks later, she suffered intestinal obstruction due to peritoneal recurrence of gastric cancer. Eighty mg of TS-1 in combination with bi-weekly administration of CDDP (10 mg) improved her intestinal obstruction. Case 2: A 50-year-old man suffered peritoneal recurrence of gastric cancer. . After 100 mg of TS-1 in combination with bi-weekly administration of CDDP (20 mg) for 1 year, CT showed almost complete improvement of peritonitis carcinomatosa. Case 3: A 58-year-old man, who suffered advanced gastric cancer with peritonitis carcinomatosa, was administrated 100 mg of TS-1 in combination with bi-weekly administration of CDDP (20 mg). After 2 months of administration, remarkable improvement was observed in the upper gastrointestinal series. Adverse reactions, which were grade 1 for
stomatitis
, were observed only in case 1. All three patients are alive (case 1 and 2 have survived more than one year) and therapy is continuing. In conclusion, combined chemotherapy of TS-1 and low-dose CDDP was effective and well tolerable for advanced gastric cancer patients. It was suggested that effective biochemical modulation might be achieved by these two drugs.

We report a case of advanced gastric cancer that responded well to low-dosage TS-1. A 72-year-old woman was diagnosed as having unresectable advanced gastric cancer with ascites and
hydronephrosis
in the right kidney. She was treated with chemotherapy using a low-dosage of TS-1 (80 mg/body/day) administered perorally for 4 weeks followed by a drug-free 2 weeks, in six-week cycles. However, she developed weight loss, appetite loss, and
stomatitis
. We therefore reduced the dosage of TS-1 from 80 mg/body/day to 60 mg/body/day. The ascites and
hydronephrosis
gradually improved during the following 3 months, whereupon she could undergo total gastrectomy. The postoperative findings showed no ascites and no peritoneal dissemination. The postoperative pathological findings showed that the cancer cells were localized to within the mucosa, and there were no cancer cells in the greater and lesser omentum. Three weeks after the operation, TS-1 was resumed at 60 mg/body/day. However, 3 months later,ascites and metastasis to the abdominal skin developed, and she died 9 months after the operation.
