As in the previous paper the unwanted effects of drugs or chemicals in the orofacial region are described. The authors take into consideration alterations such as gingival hyperplasia and hypertrophy, discoloration of the oral mucosa and teeth, oral ulceration and stomatitis, cervical lymphadenopathy, drug induced blood dyscrasias, bleeding caused by aspirin and other drugs, and cleft lip and cleft palate.

We present a patient with hemifacial microsomia and immune deficiency. The patient is a 5-year-old with grade III microtia and Pruzansky type I right mandibular hypoplasia. She developed 25 pulmonary infections in 3 years, required hospitalization every 6 weeks to receive antibiotics, and experienced recurrent herpes stomatitis and esophagitis, staphylococcal bacteremia, urinary tract, sinus, and ear infections. She had low total IgG, IgG1, IgG2, IgA, and anti-pneumococcal antibody levels. She was unable to maintain protective pneumococcal titers following vaccination. The patient's 7-year-old sister also suffered from recurrent infections, had a left facial skin tag, and a left arachnoid cyst. We conclude that immune deficiency can occur in association with hemifacial microsomia.

The availability of proper nutrients is critical for the growth, development, maintenance, and repair of healthy dentition and oral tissues. Deficiencies particularly relevant to the dental practice are those in folate and other B complex vitamins; vitamins A, C, and D; calcium; fluoride; and protein. A lack of these nutrients affects nearly every structure in the oral cavity, causing or contributing to scurvy, cleft palate, enamel hypoplasia, poor mineralization, caries, and other pathoses. Damage to the dentition can also be observed in individuals with unhealthy habits; for example, a diet high in sugars will promote processes such as demineralization and caries. Diabetes also can result from a poor diet and is associated with periodontitis and oral candidiasis. Finally, the use of tobacco products and excessive alcohol intake damage the dentition and contribute to a variety of oral diseases, including stomatitis, malnutrition, and squamous cell carcinoma. Knowledge of these relationships will enable the dentist to question patients about dietary habits and provide guidance to encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Previous results have shown that infection with the cytoplasmic-replicating parainfluenza virus 5 mutant P/V-CPI- sensitizes cells to DNA damaging agents, resulting in the enhanced killing of airway cancer cells. Here, we have tested the hypothesis that histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors can also act with P/V-CPI- infection to enhance cancer cell killing. Using human small cell lung cancer and laryngeal cancer cell lines, 10 HDAC inhibitors were tested for their effect on viability of P/V-CPI- infected cells. HDAC inhibitors such as scriptaid enhanced caspase-3/7, -8 and -9 activity induced by P/V-CPI- and overall cell toxicity. Scriptaid-mediated enhanced killing was eliminated in lung cancer cells that were engineered to express a protein which sequesters double stranded RNA. Scriptaid also enhanced cancer cell killing by two other negative strand RNA viruses - the La Crosse virus and vesicular stomatitis virus. Scriptaid treatment enhanced the spread of the P/V-CPI- virus through a population of cancer cells, and suppressed interferon-beta induction through blocking phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of Interferon Regulatory Factor 3 (IRF-3). Taken together, these data support a role for combinations of a cytoplasmic-replicating RNA virus such as the P/V-CPI- mutant along with chemotherapeutic agents.

Odontogenic lesions are well described in domestic cats, but published literature describing these lesions in nondomestic felids is limited. This study reports oral lesions in 109 captive, non-domestic felids. Ten cases of odontogenic lesions were diagnosed, including 9 with fibromatous epulis of periodontal ligament origin (FEPLO) and one odontogenic cyst in a cougar. FEPLO was common in lions. FEPLO did not recur after surgical removal in any of the 3 cases for which follow-up information was available. Increased occurrences of oral papillomas in snow leopards and eosinophilic granulomas in tigers were identified, which is consistent with the reported literature. With the exception of oral papillomas in snow leopards and FEPLO in lions, the spectrum of oral lesions in nondomestic felids was similar to what is reported in domestic cats, with squamous cell carcinoma being the most common oral malignancy, and stomatitis/gingivitis/glossitis accounting for approximately one third of all cases. Rare diagnoses with one case each included hemangioma, fibrosarcoma, melanoma, cleft palate, and glossal amyloidosis.
