Specimens of mixed untreated saliva from 3 groups of children were tested for antibodies to herpes virus by the fluorescent antibody technique (33 children with acute herpes
stomatitis
, 64 with recurrent herpes
stomatitis
, and 30 in the control group). Herpes virus antibodies were found in the saliva in 27.2 +/- 7.7% of the cases at the peak of acute stomatitis and in 77.7 +/- 10.0% of cases in the period of epithelization, in 84.6 +/- 10.0% of the examined subjects the antibodies were detected 2-4 months after the disease. Examinations of 64 saliva specimens obtained from the children during one of the relapses of chronic
stomatitis
demonstrated antibodies more frequently (59.3 +/- 8.0%) than in children at the peak of acute stomatitis disease. A trend for increased antibody content in the saliva of children by the period of epithelization of lesions in the buccal cavity both in acute stomatitis and during relapses of
chronic disease
was observed. No herpes antibodies were found in saliva specimens from 30 children of the control group.

In mice given single intraperitoneal doses of interferon, serum interferon levels peaked at 1 h postinjection and were reduced to zero at about 8 h. The interferon concentrations in spleen, liver, and lungs were about 100-fold higher than could be expected from the amount of serum contained in these organs. In the brain only low levels of antiviral activity were detected. In mice infected intraperitoneally with Mengo virus, viral replication in the brain occurred around day 4 and was accompanied by the appearance of large amounts of interferon (approximately 10(3.25) U/g). This was preceded, however, by viral replication in the spleen and by the appearance of modest amounts of interferon in spleen and serum. In these mice protection could be obtained with relatively small doses of interferon, provided protection could be obtained with relatively small doses of interferon, provided they were given before the time of maximal levels of endogenous serum interferon. In mice infected intranasally with vesicular
stomatitis
virus, virus replication in the brain started within 24 to 48 h and increased with time; also, small amounts of interferon (10(2) to 10(2.5) U/g) were already detectable on days 1 and 2. The major peak of virus replication in the brain occurred on days 5 to 6 and was accompanied by the appearance of large amounts of interferon (approximately 10(3.25) U/g). In this model early treatment with interferon also provided protection, but only if given in larger doses than in the Mengo virus system. Athymic (nu/nu) mice developed a chronic systemic infection when inoculated with a demotropic strain of vaccinia virus. No interferon was detected in sera, livers, spleens, or lungs of these animals; some mice had low levels of interferon-like antiviral activity in the brain, but no attempt was made to characterize this material. . Yet, normal (NMRI) mice were protected against acute infection with dermotropic or neurotropic strains of vaccinia virus, and athymic mice were partially protected against acute lethal infection with neurotropic vaccinia virus.

, although a minority of patients appear to clear viremia spontaneously. In this investigation, serum samples were analyzed for virological parameters, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, and neutralizing antibody response against pseudotyped vesicular
stomatitis
virus (VSV) generated using chimeric envelope glycoprotein 1 (E1) or 2 (E2) of HCV. Testing of sequential serum samples that were collected beginning at the onset of acute-phase disease demonstrated intermittent viremia, elevated ALT levels, and detectable neutralization activity against VSV in 9 of 10 patients. Serum neutralization activity did not exhibit a correlation with the genotype of the infecting HCV or with virus load. On the other hand, patients with chronic HCV infection consistently had detectable amounts of virus present but no significant variation in ALT levels, and serum samples from a majority (>90%) of patients failed to show detectable neutralization activity.

in denture-bearing patients, especially under maxillary prosthesis. Despite the existence of a great number of antifungal agents, treatment failure is observed frequently. Propolis, a natural bee product, possesses well-documented antifungal and anti-inflammatory activities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a new Brazilian propolis gel formulation in patients diagnosed with denture
stomatitis
. Thirty complete-denture wearers with denture
stomatitis
were enrolled in this pilot study. At baseline, clinical evaluation was performed by a single clinician and instructions for denture hygiene were provided. Fifteen patients received Daktarin (Miconazole gel) and 15 received Brazilian propolis gel. All patients were recommended to apply the product four times a day during one week. Clinical evaluation was repeated by the same clinician after treatment. All patients treated with Brazilian propolis gel and Daktarin had complete clinical remission of palatal edema and erythema. This new Brazilian propolis gel formulation had efficacy comparable to Daktarin and could be an alternative topical choice for the treatment of denture
