The planorbid snail, Helisoma duryi, has been proposed as a possible biocontrol agent against the intermediate host snails of
schistosomiasis
. In an attempt to evaluate the possible effect of interference between H. duryi and Biomphalaria pfeifferi, life-tables were compiled for these two snail species maintained both in the presence of each other and separately. The calculated population parameters indicated that H. duryi had a higher innate capacity of increase, net reproduction rate and finite rate of increase as well as a longer lifespan than the target species. However, the biological potential of B. pfeifferi was not influenced by the presence of H. duryi, and the latter appears to be unable to act as competitor against B. pfeifferi under similar prevailing conditions. It is possible that the situation might change under conditions of crowding and
starvation
.

Human helminthic infestations are extraordinarily common in tropical regions and represent a significant burden for those countries and their populations. The risk of intestinal helminthoses is further increased by poverty. Particularly in children helminthoses lead to malnutrition (ascariasis etc) or iron and protein deficiency (ancylostomiasis). Tropical helminthoses like
schistosomiasis
and filariasis can cause severe organ damage,
starvation
, and early death. In contrast, returning travellers very rarely acquire tropical helminthoses, if they follow simple hygienic rules. Furthermore, the worm burden in returning travelers hardly ever is high enough to cause severe illness. Therefore, tropical helminthosis is more common in immigrants from endemic areas compared to returning travelers.

Cytokine-induced apoptosis inhibitor (CIAP) is a novel antiapoptotic molecule, which is different to inhibitor of apoptosis protein or B-cell lymphoma 2. CIAP was originally identified as a molecule that conferred resistance to apoptosis induced by growth factor
starvation
. However, it remains to be undercharacterized in schistosomes. Here, we molecularly characterize a novel cytokine-induced apoptosis inhibitor from Schistosoma japonicum (SjCIAP). The transcription of the SjCIAP occurred at all of developmental stages investigated including eggs, cercariae, schistosomula, and adult schistosomes. Functional assay indicated that the SjCIAP could inhibit caspase activity in either human cell lines or schistosome lysates. Our preliminary results suggest that the SjCIAP may play important roles in parasitic living and development by regulating apoptosis, and drug target of SjCIAP might be a potential for
schistosomiasis
control.
