Many adolescent affective disorders are rooted in biological vulnerability to stress and a predisposition to mood variations that are latent in childhood. As these stress-sensitive children encounter the normative helplessness and struggle for autonomy of adolescence, they may use violence, explosive rage, self-
starvation
, grandiose self-idealization,
drug abuse
, and suicidal behavior to relieve psychological helplessness and tension. They may begin a lifelong cycle of failure, disruption, and rejection by family and schools. The author describes adolescent depression and its biological underpinnings, deprivation syndromes, and manic-depressive illness, as well as the concept of affective violence in organic affective syndromes and episodic dyscontrol syndromes. These disorders call for multimodal treatment in which appropriate medication facilitates psychosocial intervention.

Anorexia nervosa is a severe psychiatric disorder characterized by unrelenting self-
starvation
and life-threatening weight loss. The relentlessness with which individuals with anorexia nervosa pursue
starvation
and in some cases exercise despite the negative physical, emotional, and social consequences parallels features of addictive disorders. From a clinical perspective, individuals with anorexia nervosa behave similarly to individuals with substance abuse by narrowing their behavioral repertoire so that weight loss, restricting food intake, and excessive exercise interfere with other activities in much the same way that substance abuse does. However, fundamental differences exist between anorexia nervosa and substance abuse that suggest anorexia nervosa is not an addiction in and of itself.

Noncommunicable chronic diseases (NCCDs) are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality globally. The mismatch between present day diets and ancestral genome is suggested to contribute to the NCCDs burden, which is promoted by traditional risk factors like unhealthy diets, physical inactivity, alcohol and tobacco. However, epigenetic evidence now suggests that cumulatively inherited epigenetic modifications may have made humans more prone to the effects of present day lifestyle factors. Perinatal
starvation
was widespread in the 19th century. This together with more recent events like increasing consumption of western and low fiber diets, smoking,
harmful use
of alcohol, physical inactivity, and environmental pollutants may have programed the human epigenome for higher NCCDs risk. In this review, on the basis of available epigenetic data it is hypothesized that transgenerational effects of lifestyle factors may be contributing to the current global burden of NCCDs. Thus, there is a need to reconsider prevention strategies so that the subsequent generations will not have to pay for our sins and those of our ancestors.
