Equine dermal fibroblasts persistently infected with equine infectious
anemia
virus (EIAV) show no alterations in cell morphology or growth kinetics when compared to uninfected cells. The percentage of cells immunofluorescent positive for viral proteins fluctuated, depending upon the stage of the cell cycle, while production of extracellular virus was uniform throughout the cell cycle, increasing only as the cell number increased. This was shown in log versus stationary phase cultures as well as in cultures synchronized by sterum
starvation
. The establishment of productive infection did not require host cell DNA synthesis. Normal levels of progeny virus were produced in cultures pretreated with mitomycin C and placed in serum-containing medium. Serum-starved cultures, however, did not support EIAV replication as well as other cultures, presumably because synthesis of provirus was inhibited.

Pigbel is the commonest cause of death in children over 12 months of age at Goroka Hospital. The clinical features are described. The medical management of pigbel includes intravenous fluids, nasogastric suction, penicillin and chloramphenicol. The development of dehydration,
anaemia
, hyponatraemia, hypokalaemia and hypoalbuminaemia must be prevented. In severe pigbel prolonged
starvation
may result in malnutrition that impairs wound healing and increases mortality. Intravenous feeding is therefore desirable in some cases.

In 104 severely growth-retarded fetuses, the mean white blood cell count (WBC), as well as neutrophil, lymphocyte and monocyte counts were reduced. Furthermore, the severity of the leucopenia was significantly related to the degree of fetal 'smallness' and
anaemia
. These findings suggest that leucopenia observed in growth-retarded neonates may be a consequence of intra-uterine
starvation
due to deficiency of haematinics.

Diagnostic cordocentesis is indicated in situations that require fetal vascular access. These include detection of intrauterine TORCH infections, estimation of the extent of fetal
anemia
before initiating therapy for isoimmunization and determination of fetal hematocrit for appropriate timing of subsequent transfusions. It may also be applied to evaluate fetal acid-base status and rapid karyotyping in fetuses with structural anomalies, intrauterine growth retardation, or oligohydramnios. More recently, it has been used to assist in the diagnosis of intrauterine
starvation
. Therapeutic applications of cordocentesis include intrauterine transfusion and the administration of medications directly to the fetus. Complications inherent to this procedure include cord hematoma and placental abruption.

The Great Circus of Mocorongo was conceived in 1984 with funds from the state and various educational institutions to disseminate health messages to communities with scarce economic and human resources in Para State, Brazil. The show was aimed at 15,000 people scattered in 13 remote communities afflicted with malnutrition as well as high morbidity and mortality. It used a methodology consisting of medical and pedagogical techniques showing in dramatical and amusing scenes everyday human encounters with diseases, microbes, the problems of hygiene, and various aspects of community health (proper nutrition, diarrhea, use of medicines, respiratory infections, and vaccinations). The central characters of the show entitled "Health and Merriment" were: the housewife Larimunda, the druggist Salim, and the clowns Banziero, Xulex, and Primentinha. It is difficult to measure the effect of laughter and mirth on changing one's mindset, but in 12 months not a single instance of death of a child occurred resulting from diarrhea or malnutrition. Children played with the characters in scenes that stressed good nutrition in
anemia
or during diarrhea, they used Salim's medicines for rehydration and vaccination and they witnessed Larimunda's victory over microbes. The goal was to transform the village in a grand scene stressing prevention of ailments. The circus was a timid and hesitant venture at its inception involving children, violence,
starvation
, hope, and fantasy. Still, it contributed to formal research by introducing innovative approaches to nursing materials and methods.

We have developed a murine model of wasting by injecting intracerebrally cells which continuously secrete h-cachectin/TNF (CHO-TNF) to: (a) determine the effects of cachectin/TNF produced continuously in the central nervous system (CNS), and (b) compare the metabolic effects of cachectin/TNF-secreting tumor in the brain to the cachexia caused by CHO-TNF tumor in peripheral tissue (IM). Intracerebral CHO-TNF tumors produced increased serum h-cachectin/TNF levels with lethal hypophagia and weight loss (mean survival time of 11 d); these changes were not observed in association with nonsecretory control brain tumors. The metabolic consequences of intracerebral cachectin/TNF production were indistinguishable from acute, lethal
starvation
: whole-body lipid content was decreased significantly but protein was conserved. Although intramuscular cachectin/TNF-secreting tumors caused similar increases of serum h-cachectin/TNF levels, profound anorexia did not develop; wasting developed after a longer period of tumor burden (50 d) with classical signs of cachexia (i.e.,
anemia
and depletion of both protein and lipid). These studies provide a reproducible animal model of site-specific cytokine production and suggest that, regardless of serum levels, cachectin/TNF produced locally in brain influences both the rate of development of wasting and its net metabolic effects.

Aluminum (Al) compounds are widely used in drugs and food additives but the toxicity of such compounds is not known in detail except in patients with renal insufficiency (J. W. Coburn and A. C. Alfrey, 1986, Kidney Int. 29, Suppl. 18). In this experiment, toxicity of ingested Al was investigated in relation to nutritional conditions in normal rats having no renal insufficiency. Sucrose, lactose, milk, casein and soy-protein diets were prepared. As the Al source, aluminum chloride (AlCl3) was added to these diets at the level of 2000 micrograms/g (ppm). Male weanling Wistar rats were fed for 67 days without any Al effect on body weight gain. After a half-day
starvation
they were terminated. The significance of difference resulting from Al treatment was statistically tested between rats consuming diet with or without added Al. Serum Al concentrations did not exceed 20 ng/ml in any of the groups. Tibia Al concentration doubled in rats consuming added Al in every diet but lactose. Liver Al concentration increased significantly in the Sucrose, Milk, and Casein groups compared to each Control group consuming diet without addition of Al. No lactose effect on Al accumulation was observed. With Al treatment,
anemia
and hypophosphatemia were not observed, but a decrease in tibia weight was observed with every diet. Aluminum-dependent decreases in serum triglyceride (TG) concentration were also observed in all dietary groups, without any effect on serum cholesterol or phospholipid (P-lipid) concentrations.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Prenatal
starvation
in the guinea pig causes reduced pulmonary diffusing capacity and retarded alveolarization among neonates. To study the impact of such
starvation
on biochemical and mechanical properties of the neonatal lung, pregnant guinea pigs were fed ad libitum throughout gestation or starved with 50% rations during their last trimester. Neonatal body weight was 35% less due to
starvation
, and dry lung weight, DNA, and protein contents were decreased 26, 36, and 31%, respectively (P less than 0.001 for all). Hematological data indicated no
anemia
, hypoproteinemia, or altered glucocorticoid levels due to
starvation
. Total surfactant phospholipids in these neonates were reduced 61% in lavage and 35% in the neonatal lung tissue, although surfactant compositions were similar to controls. Specific lung compliance in the air-filled lungs was not altered, but the saline-filled lungs were more distensible over deflation pressures of 9-18 cmH2O (transpulmonary). Although
starvation
retarded both lung cellularity and surfactant, only that portion of lung elastic recoil attributable to tissue forces was affected.

While much has appeared in the recent literature about various psychotherapeutic techniques used to treat eating disorders, little attention has been paid to the medical complications. Prominent among these are heart damage, failure of the endocrine system, infarction and perforation of the stomach after acute dilatation, multiple suicide attempts, aspiration, injury or rupture of the esophagus, severe bleeding per rectum causing
anemia
due to laxative abuse, hypokalemic nephropathy, depressive disorders due to
starvation
, and severe erosion of the enamel of the teeth resulting in extensive loss of teeth. I decry the sudden trend of nonmedically trained personnel rushing into the treatment of eating disorders, particularly anorexia nervosa and bulimia, because they know little about the possibly fatal consequences of their failure to attend to some of these medical phenomena. I also note with grave concern the identification of the medical profession with the "thin is better" mentality of our culture, which blinds them to the serious medical consequences of eating disorders.

In summary,
anemia
developing in a patient with cancer can be due to several different factors. A relative failure of erythropoiesis, in conjunction with a modestly shortened erythrocyte survival, is the most likely explanation for the
anemia
and can occur in patients with or without bone marrow invasion. Several theories have been proposed to explain the mechanism of limited red cell production in cancer. Internal iron
starvation
and cancer toxic factors have been widely implicated. Immunoglobulin inhibitors of erythropoiesis occur in the rare entity, pure red cell aplasia, which is sometimes associated with thymomas. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia can also occur in patients with solid cancers, pointing out the need for a complete evaluation of
anemia
in any patient with recent-onset
anemia
. Successful treatment and prognostic implications of
anemia
in cancer is dependent on proper diagnosis.
