40 children (23 males, 17 females) have been diagnosed have ANLL during the period from february 1970 to september 1981. According to FAB classification, 24 cases were M1,-M2, 9 M3, 3 M4, 3 M5 and 1 M6. At diagnosis, 20 patients (50%) had leukocytes less than 10.000/mmc, 6 (15%) had leukocytes greater than 50.000mmc. Hb levels was 7 g% in 16 patients (40%); 10 children had hepatosplenomegaly (25%), 7
splenomegaly
(18%) and 5 lymphoadenomegaly (13%). 4 patients had cutaneous or mucous infiltrates. None had meningeal involvement at diagnosis. According to the year of diagnosis, 3 groups can be identified. In the group I (1970-73), 11 patients have been treated with not codified combination chemotherapy as ARA-C, 6-TG, DNR,
CTX
, Metil-GAG. In the group II (1974-76) and in the group III (1977-81), the patients (respectively 12 and 17) have been treated according to the following protocols: LAM-5 (3), TRAP (5), COAP (1), LAM 80 (2), AIL 7402 (8), AIL 7604, AIL 7801 (6). Immunotherapy has been performed in 7 cases. CNS prophylaxis (MTX i.t. +/-ARA-C +/- RT) was given in 5 patients of group II and in 6 of group III. I patients of group I (45%), 6 of group II (50%) and 13 of group III (76%) achieved CR. Median duration of remission was 5 months in the group I and in 17 in group II and III.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The anemia and inflammation concurrent with blood stage malaria trigger stress haematopoiesis and erythropoiesis. The activity of osteoclasts seems required for the mobilization of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPC) from the bone marrow to the periphery. Knowing that BALB/c mice with acute Plasmodium chabaudi adami malaria have profound alterations in bone remodelling cells, we evaluated the extent to which osteoclasts influence their hematopoietic response to infection. For this, mice were treated with osteoclast inhibiting hormone calcitonin prior to parasite inoculation, and infection as well as hematological parameters was studied. In agreement with osteoclast-dependent HSPC mobilization, administration of calcitonin led to milder
splenomegaly
, reduced numbers of HSPC in the spleen, and their retention in the bone marrow. Although C-terminal telopeptide (
CTX
) levels, indicative of bone resorption, were lower in calcitonin-treated infected mice, they remained comparable in naive and control infected mice. Calcitonin-treated infected mice conveniently responded to anemia but generated less numbers of splenic macrophages and suffered from exacerbated infection; interestingly, calcitonin also decreased the number of macrophages generated in vitro. Globally, our results indicate that although osteoclast-dependent HSC mobilization from bone marrow to spleen is triggered in murine blood stage malaria, this activity is not essential for stress erythropoiesis.

Non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is recognized as the most common malignant disease worldwide and combination treatment is recommended as its first line therapy. As a Ph2 clinical product, Ginsenoside H dripping pills (GH) is proposed as an adjuvant of chemotherapy. In the present study, we utilized a postoperative model to evaluate the efficacy of GH on the functions of anti-recurrence and improvement of life quality when combined with chemotherapeutic drug cyclophosphamide (
CTX
). Specifically, the anti-recurrence effect was evaluated by tumor inhibiting rate and the improvement of life quality was evaluated by the remission of
splenomegaly
and emaciation. The underlying mechanisms were explored via quantitative real time-PCR, Elisa and IHC staining. Results showed that GH had a synergy when combined with
CTX
against tumor recurrence, significantly improved the life quality of postoperative patients via remitting
splenomegaly
and emaciation. H&E staining showed that GH could increase the number of splenic T cells, which were inhibited after
CTX
administration. Furthermore, the reversion of Th1/Th2 shift, which had been verified by different methods, may account for one of the mechanisms of the synergy. All these results indicated Ginsenoside H dripping pills as a promising adjuvant for postoperative chemotherapy of NSCLC.
