Antibiotic sensitivities of 15302 organisms of common pathogenic species isolated in one hospital pathology department in 1971 and 1974 have been studied. Resistance to cephaloridine did not change materially. The proportion of strains resistant to ampicillin did, however, increase, and this is attributed to the widespread therapeutic use of the antibiotic.
Cephaloridine
, on the other hand, was largely used in the hospital as a single-dose, intra-incisional prophylactic against surgical wound
sepsis
.

A total of 406 post-operative clean wounds were studied for the presence of
sepsis
and antibiogram of organisms were established. The over all post-operative
sepsis
rate was 13% (clinical) and 12% (bacteriological). Staphylococcus aureus (32%) and Pseudomonas species (21%) were the commonest organisms recovered and Netilmycin,
Cephaloridine
and Norfloxacin were the most effective antibiotics against both Gram positive and negative infections. This study reflects the change in pattern of infecting bacterial flora in case of post operative wound infections and its antibiogram.

A cefotaxime-resistant, ceftazidime-susceptible Escherichia coli isolate was obtained from a patient with
sepsis
in 1997, from which a beta-lactamase with a pI of 8.1 was cloned.
Cephaloridine
and cefotaxime relative hydrolysis rates were 167 and 81, respectively (penicillin G rate = 100), whereas ceftazidime hydrolysis was not detected. The nucleotide sequence revealed a bla gene related to that coding for CTX-M-3. Despite 21 nucleotide substitutions, only 2 determined amino acid changes (Ala27Val and Arg38Gln). The amino acid sequence identity between this enzyme, designated CTX-M-10, and the chromosomal beta-lactamase of Kluyvera ascorbata was 81%.
