Serum glycated albumin (GA) level is used along with that of glucose and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) as indicators of glycemic control for diabetic patients. Although serum GA levels are affected by blood glucose level, they are also influenced by serum albumin metabolism and other pathological conditions. However, a systematic comparison of the serum GA levels in different types of human diseases has not been reported. In current study, 86,319 clinical lab test results of GA levels from healthy individuals and patients with 57 different types of diseases during the past 5 years in our hospital were retrieved and analyzed. Based on the mean (SD), median, and p (-Log
10
p) values, we found 29/57 diseases including type 2 diabetes,
diabetic nephropathy
, uremia, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, hepatic encephalopathy, and azotemia had significantly (p<0.05, -Log
10
p>1.30) increased GA levels whereas 18/57 diseases including nephrotic syndrome, preeclampsia, Wilms' tumor, lupus erythematosus, and
sepsis
had significantly decreased GA levels compared to that of healthy controls. Moreover, the highest -Log
10
p values (>100) were observed in nephrotic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, preeclampsia, coronary heart disease, uremia, acute cerebral infarction, leukemia, and cerebrovascular disease in a descending order. These data indicated that the serum GA levels could be increased or decreased significantly in a disease-specific manner. Revealing the molecular mechanisms underlying these observations might make the increased or decreased serum GA levels indicators for different types of diseases, especially as an indicator that distinguishes nephrotic syndrome from other types of kidney diseases.

Different diseases and disorders that affect the kidneys include, but are not limited to, glomerulonephritis,

, polycystic kidney disease, kidney stones, renal fibrosis,

, and renal cell carcinoma. Kidney disease tends to develop over many years, making it difficult to identify until much later when kidney function is severely impaired and undergoing kidney failure. Although conservative care, symptom management, medication, dialysis, transplantation, and aggressive renal cancer therapy are some of the current strategies/approaches to kidney disease treatment, new preventative targeted therapies are needed. Epidemiological studies have suggested that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is associated with health benefits including protection against kidney disease and renal cancer. Resveratrol, a polyphenol found in grapes and berries, has been reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, neuroprotective, and anti-cancer properties. The current review summarizes the existing in vitro and in vivo animal and human studies examining the nephroprotective effects of resveratrol.

Proper renal blood flow (RBF) and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) are critical for maintaining normal blood pressure, kidney function and water and electrolyte homeostasis. The renal microvasculature expresses a multitude of receptors mediating vasodilation and vasoconstriction, which can influence glomerular blood flow and capillary pressure. Despite this, RBF and GFR remain quite stable when arterial pressure fluctuates because of the autoregulatory mechanism. ATP and adenosine participate in autoregulatory control of RBF and GFR via activation of two different purinoceptor families (P1 and P2). Autophagy is a highly conserved intracellular catabolic process for the degradation of cytoplasmic components that has recently gained increasing attention for its importance in kidney diseases. It is indispensable for the maintenance of kidney homeostasis both in physiological and pathological conditions. Investigations utilizing various kidney cell-specific conditional autophagy-related gene knockouts have facilitated the advancement in understanding of the role of autophagy in the kidney. Recent findings are raising the possibility that defective autophagy exerts a critical role in different pathological conditions of the kidney. An emerging body of evidence reveals that autophagy exhibits cytoprotective functions in both glomerular and tubular compartments of the kidney, suggesting the upregulation of autophagy as an attractive therapeutic strategy. However, there is also accumulating evidence that autophagy could be deleterious, which presents a formidable challenge in developing therapeutic strategies targeting autophagy.
