In 1744, the 56-yr.-old scientist Emanuel Swedenborg underwent a transformative event that could be characterized as convulsive. He subsequently became a visionary and spent the remaining 28 years of his life exploring the spirit world and describing his experiences in an extensive corpus of writings. Retrospective analysis of his visions and trance states indicates signs and symptoms consistent with a vascular anomaly in the posterior area of the left cerebral hemisphere and associated effects due to partial
seizures
with complex symptomatology. Swedenborg's writings have formed the basis of a church that remains active to this day. His visionary experiences can be interpreted as an instance of neuropsychological symptomatology, under the shaping influence of a powerful intellect, contributing to the formation of an historically significant religious movement. The term neuropathography is proposed for a new genre of neuropsychological case study in which the emphasis on brain-related symptomatology is balanced by attention to autobiographical and broad cultural factors.

To test the hypothesis of a linear relationship between the intensity of geomagnetic activity during the first two days after birth and the development of epilepsy, the responses of the item "I have had an epileptic seizure" was obtained from the Personal Philosophy Inventories of 1,453 students who had been enrolled in first-year psychology courses over a 13-yr. period. The only statistically significant effect was linear and was between the successive 10 nT (nanoTesla) increments of the intensity of geomagnetic activity during the two days after birth and the percentage of students who reported epileptic
seizures
. The percentage of subjects reporting a history of
seizures
ranged from 1% for those born when the activity was less than 10 nT to 4% for those born when this activity exceeded 40 nT.

On three separate sessions 24 male rats with histories of limbic epilepsy were exposed to 10 temporal configurations for 5 min. each of one of two patterns of magnetic fields. Their intensities averaged about 1 microTesla (microT). The numbers of Level 5 (Racine)
seizures
, inferred by the rat's rearing, rapid forelimb clonus, and falling, were statistically more frequent for the frequency-modulated (Thomas) pattern when its pixel duration and interstimulus presentation were 3 msec. The effectiveness of this temporal configuration was replicated in a second within-subjects experiment (n = 9) that directly compared the numbers of
seizures
during exposures to each of the two patterns and to a sham-field. These results suggest that brains with sensitive limbic systems might respond to weak magnetic fields, generated from multiple overlapping fields from communication and computer systems whose temporal derivatives emerge as complex sequences with pixel durations within the millisecond range.

This is a preliminary report of the quality of life of 9 people, 5 men and 4 women, in Hong Kong who underwent temporal lobectomy for
seizure
control. The Chinese version of World Health Organization Quality of Life Measure Abbreviated Version, validated in Hong Kong, was used as the outcome measure. Analysis suggested that the quality of life of these participants after successful temporal lobectomy was poorer than that of 157 healthy controls in the physical and psychological domains as measured. This suggests that other factors in addition to achieving complete
seizure
control play significant roles in promoting the quality of life of such patients.

A left-handed Roman Catholic female adolescent with a history of early brain trauma reported nightly visitations by a sentient being. During one episode she experienced vibrations of the bed, an external presence along the left side that moved into her body, inner vaginal (not clitoral) and uterine sensations, and the sense of being impregnated by a force she attributed to the Holy Spirit. After the latter experience she felt an invisible baby superimposed upon her left shoulder. Analyses of the measurements for magnetic anomalies within her bedroom indicated an electric clock about 20 cm from her head while she slept. The complex form of the 4 microT magnetic pulses generated by the clock was similar to shapes that evoke electrical
seizures
in epileptic rats and sensitive humans.

Chronic, limbic epilepsy was induced in male rats by a single systemic injection of lithium and pilocarpine. In two separate experiments, each 6 mo. in duration, the proportion of the population that displayed an overt motor
seizure
(head nodding, rearing, and forelimb clonus) within 10 min. each day after delivery of food pellets (despite food provided ad libitum) was recorded. Cumulative records for the numbers of rats in each population that displayed overt
seizure
for the first time during the observation period were plotted as a function of time. The occurrence of the saturated (approaching 100%) asymptote at about five months was interpreted to indicate that brief (10 min.) sampling over the 144 successive days that would compose a single 24-hr. period could serve as an estimate of the average probability of an overt
seizure
during an average 24-hr. period. If this assumption is correct, then these rats would have displayed about one overt
seizure
per day.

In a split-litter design, equal numbers of male and female rats were exposed either to carbon dioxide for 1 min, or to the control condition on either postnatal Days 9-10 or 17-18. At 120 days of age half the numbers of rats in each condition were given subclinical dosages of lithium (1.5 mEq/kg) and pilocarpine (15 mg/kg) or saline. 40 days later all rats were tested in a conditioned fear paradigm. A four-way analysis of variance as a function of the variables anoxia, age at the time of anoxia sex, and subclinical
seizure
induction indicated a significant interaction between sex and anoxic history. Post hoc analysis showed that performance of male rats exposed to the anoxic condition did not differ from normal or anoxic female rats. The results suggest that only 1 min. of preweaning anoxia may produce permanent changes in contextual fear conditioning for male but not female rats.

Male rats were seized with lithium and pilocarpine and then injected within 30 min. with either acepromazine or ketamine. These rats as well as age-matched normal rats were observed daily for one year. The rats which had received the ketamine after the
seizures
were significantly heavier than either the normal rats or the other group of seized rats. The bulk of this increased weight was due to the marked increase in white, extremely dense adipose tissue. Compared to the acepromazine-treated rats, the ketamine-treated rats did not exhibit spontaneous
seizures
and exhibited cerebral widths comparable to normal rats. These results suggest that the multifocal, graded neuronal loss associated with this
seizure
model may allow other "configurations" to emerge that can support normal behaviors as well as new characteristics.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the factorial validity of the Brunel Mood Scale, which measures anger, confusion, depression, fatigue, tension, and vigor, for water-skiers. Participants were 345 water-skiers (age range 16 to 39 years, men: n=311, women: n=34) who completed the scale approximately 1 hour before a water-skiing competition. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated support for the validity of the 6-factor model, with a Comparative
Fit
Index of .90 and Root Mean Squared Error of Approximation of .07. Internal consistency coefficients were above the .70 criterion. It is suggested that the Brunel Mood Scale shows factorial validity for use with water-skiers and that researchers should continue to assess validation of the Brunel Mood Scale with other measures and with specific appropriate samples.

In two previous experiments the ratings of the pleasantness of the experiences for a total of 45 subjects tested within a specific experimental setting were negatively correlated (rhos about -.35 to -.40) with the global geomagnetic activity on the days of the ratings. In the present analysis, subjective ratings from a comparable experiment completed 13 years ago were also negatively correlated (rho = -.50) with the global geomagnetic activity on the days of the experiences. The consistency of these results suggests a common neurophysiological process that generates hedonistic affect with which the multiple types of behaviors, such as aggression, homicide, traffic fatalities, epileptic
seizures
, and industrial accidents, are correlated. Consequently these apparently "divergent" behaviors are correlated with geomagnetic activity because they are correlated with a central neurophysiological process which may be sensitive to increases in geomagnetic activity.
