Arteriolar diameters and venular erythrocyte velocities in the small pial vessels on the surface of the cat brain were measured by TV methods during induced epileptic
seizures
through a cranial window.
Grand mal
seizures
maximally dilated arterioles and increased venular erythrocyte velocity up to 400%. High positive correlation existed between changes in CSF hydrogen ion concentration and pial arteriolar diameter, suggesting metabolic regulation of CBF through CSF/interstitial fluid hydrogen ion alterations during the
seizure
.

A 35-year-old man ingested food contaminated with lindane, an insecticide containing almost pure gamma hexachlorocyclohexane.
Grand mal
seizures
and severe acidemia developed rapidly. The
seizures
recurred for nearly 2 hours, then ceased. In addition, the patient had muscle weakness and pain, headaches, episodic hypertension, myoglobinuria, acute renal failure and anemia. Pancreatitis developed 13 days after the ingestion of lindane. A muscle biopsy on the 15th day of illness demonstrated widespread necrosis and regeneration of muscle fibres. The patient's condition improved and he was discharged 24 days after the onset of his illness. During the year following the poisoning the patient noted difficulty with recent memory, loss of libido and easy fatigability. One year after lindane ingestion the results of physical examination, including those for muscle power and bulk, were normal.

Stereotactic Forel-H-Tomy has been performed in 20 cases of epilepsy refractory to medication of which 15 have been followed from 2 to 7 years. The outcome of operation in 7 cases is judged as 'markedly effective' or 'effective'. In 3 cases the operation was ineffective. Effectiveness was greater in bilateral operation. Improvement of EEG was indicated by disappearance or marked reduction of spikes (or sharp waves) or spike and wave complex.
Grand mal
seizures
alone or cases of minor
seizure
alone have responded more favorably than other clinical types. Six cases demonstrated improvement of personality and emotions.

Adolescents who have
grand mal epilepsy
and their parents were interviewed, and the adolescents were evaluated neurologically. Better
seizure
control and less neurologic disability were unexpectedly associated with less open communication between the adolescents and their families and friends, and with a poorer self-image and poorer expectations for the future. These findings were unrelated to IQ or school performance. This outcome is consistent with other studies of invisible defects and stigmatization, and suggests that youngsters who have relatively mild defects involving social disability may be more troubled than those with more apparent defects, for which denial may be operative. An incidental finding in the study was that a question more predictive of overall family, social, and academic function than the neurologic findings was simply whether or not the youngster was attending the appropriate grade in school for his or her age.

Grand mal
type of sequential spike discharges at 8-12 cps are rare as interseizure phenomena. When the grand mal component is prominent, it usually indicates a greater tendency for major convulsions. The case of a 15 year old girl who developed akinetic
seizures
along with her menarche and whose electroencephalogram showed recurring sharp waves at 10-11 cps, is reported, and its clinical significance discussed.

Seventy cases each of temporal lobe epilepsy and
grand mal epilepsy
were studied for their sexual functioning. The two groups were similar as regards age, sex, duration of illness, frequency of
seizures
and menstrual and marital history. A significantly greater number of temporal lobe epileptics were found to be hyposexual. They had a global loss of performance and interest in the sexual sphere and showed no concern over it. One case in the group of temporal lobe eiplepsy, as against none in the other group, was hypersexual. There were no cases of sexual deviations in either of the groups. The findings of the study are discussed in the light of the relevant literature.

Behavioural and bioelectric characteristics of epileptic
seizures
caused by acoustic stimulus in mice from the Swiss Albino Rb strain with genetically determined audiogenic epilepsy are presented. The value of this epilepsy model is emphasized stressing that the epileptogenic stimulus acts from a distance, causing no damage to the nervous system and no artifacts. Besides that,
seizures
can be provoked at a definite frequency and at arbitrarily chosen time. A disadvantage of the model is the necessity of provoking each
seizure
separately which causes that this model cannot meet one of the conditions of Jasper's definition concerning spontaneity of
seizure
development. With regard to the course of
seizure
it is emphasized that it is somewhat similar to human
grand mal epilepsy
representing the basic phases of
seizure
. Electrophysiological investigations carried out under conditions of long-term fully reproducible experiment demonstrated presence of very evident and rich electrocorticographic symptomatology of audiogenic epileptic seizure whose behavioural phases show a high correlation with phasic changes in bioelectric brain activity. The investigations carried out in sleep failed to demonstrate differences in the susceptibility to
seizure
development when the stimulus was applied in waking state or in any of both phases of sleep. This strain is useful to morphological ultrastructural, biochemical and possibly electrophysiological investigations.

In 170 patients 184 ventriculographies with water-soluble contrast media were carried out, 60 examinations with meglumine iocarmate (Dimer-X) and 124 with metrizamide (Amipaque).
Grand mal
seizures
occurred in one patient following the injection of meglumine iocarmate. The indications, technique and diagnostic results are reported.

Median reaction times and intra-individual variability were studied in epileptic (N = 63), brain-damaged (non-epileptic) (N = 25) and control patients (N = 25) using a six and one half minute visual, continuous reaction time task. Epileptic and brain-damaged groups were significantly slower than control patients on median reaction times at the 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles and on the differences between the 10th and 90th percentiles. Thus both general slowing and greater intra-individual variability were found in the epileptic and brain-damaged patients. Reaction times were not related to presence, type and severity of EEG abnormality or to age of onset of epilepsy.
Grand mal
patients did have significantly greater variability than other types of
seizure
patients. Epileptic and brain-damaged patients did not differ significantly on any reaction time variables. Both groups were discriminated significantly from the controls on all reaction time measures, especially on the intra-individual variability measure.

411 patients with epileptic
seizures
manifest only after the age of 25 were investigated as to aetiology,
seizure
type and frequency and age and sex distribution. Neurological, neuro-radiological and EEG findings are reported: There was a clear prevalence of male patients (67%). Manifestation occurred mainly between 30 and 40 years of age (65%). Most
seizures
were primarily of the generalized grand mal type (68%).
Grand mal
with focal onset occurred in 13%, partial
seizures
in 11%, complex partial seizures (psychomotor
seizures
) in 5%, the latter plus grand mal seizures in 2% and other types in 1% of the cases. Aetiological factors were: chronic alcoholism (31%), vascular diseases (17%), tumours (12%), traumatic brain lesions (8,5%), toxic metabolic lesions (6%) and other factors (6%). Idiopathic epilepsy of late onset was a rare cause (4%). The aetiology remained unknown in 15% of cases. We found that the differences in age distribution,
seizure
type and the EEG findings are significant factors in the differential diagnosis and we compared them with those found in similar investigations.
